In 1998 my grandpa passed away everyone came over had 5 combines going got the the beans done in one day it was so great to see it I was in college that day but we took pictures
Millennial Farmer Thank You for sharing this video and the nice commentary, great community effort coming to help with the neighbour's harvest, take care and have a lovely day.
@@MillennialFarmer It really is and is a testament too, that there still is good will and community among each other. It really speaks of your character and shows your heart as well as the others that came out to help. Especially considering it has been such a challenging fall/year weather wise and those hours ya'll gave are precious considering the time of year we are in.
I recall back in the mid-50’s, a neighbor got sick and about 30 or 40 neighbors, including my dad, got together to plow his wheat stubble for summer fallow. They brought what they had, 3 to 5 bottom plows with levers and rope trips, and tractors with no cabs and no hydraulics. The ladies got together and fixed dinner (lunch). Fast forward 20 or so years, and I had taken a leave from my career to help my dad, who was ill. A neighbor was very ill and 2 neighbors organized the area to help. This time it was disking the wheat stubble for summer fallow. The appointed day came and everyone was supposed to be there at 8am. This was an extremely flat area and tractors and discs were coming from every point of the compass. It was quite a sight. They again brought what they had, old and new, small and four- wheel drive, with discs from 16’ to 50’. There were 52 tractors. As they arrived, the organizers put three into a field, and by noon, over 1500 acres had been done. The ladies had fixed dinner, and the farmer’s family had a bulk truck come out and fueled everyone while we were eating. One of the organizer’s teenage sons had been killed in a car wreck a week earlier, and everybody felt so good it was decided to go and do his. Another 1000 acres. I went back to my career (not in agriculture, unfortunately) and achieved a modicum of success, kudos and recognition, but that one day over 40 years ago is still one of the best memories of my life.
Way to go Zack! When our neighbor passed away we all got together and mowed the lawn and fixed fences and brought hot food. He was a WW1 vet who had been existing after being hit with mustard gas.
What awesome neighbors. An example to all the world. "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
Last year, here in Wisconsin, similar situation with a good family friend and neighbor.. he died from non hodgkins cancer suddenly and everyone came in and helped clear the crops.
I grew up on a ranch in Wyoming, we had a neighbors house burn down. Everyone in the valley got together helped put out the fire. Afterwards everyone came together and built a new log cabin for the family bye the end of the day. It was a awesome experience, something I’ll remember the rest of my life. Good job guys. P.s.I’m a big fan of your show. Been watching for a couple of months now love it. Keep up the good work.
God bless you, for contributing! ALL combines were wonderfully built and they CANNOT see each others' colors, either. All they know and love to do, is harvest crops! If only PEOPLE would behave the same! By the way, I'm your dad's age!
There is no better feeling in the world then helping out a neighbor in tough times. Words never can explain it. It is what farmers do to help each other. Thank you for helping out. And yes. Tillage is what we do. Help heat that ground up faster in the spring.
Got to love the farming community also competing to be bigger. But when one farm needs help all farms around taking time to help. Love the farming community
Its so amazing when neighbors come together like this last fall my dad was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in his right leg and was to be amputated. Our combine broke down two separate issues at once. Neighbors caught word and the day before surgery they cut our beans 220 acres in one day had 5 combines 3 carts and 8 semis. I hope I can pay it back one day to anyone that helped.
I'll never forget the help from neighboring farmers. It seems when there's tough times neighbors step up & help. Seems a little different today but we're not big farmers anymore. Sure it hasn't changed much for larger farmers. I will say the equipment today is massive. One could only dream of driving these cadillacs & using this type of equipment. You young one's will have many yrs. & have a healthy physical body at an older age.
Wasn't just farmers, years ago didn't matter where you were neighbor's would always help neighbors. How I wish we could just have a little of that back again. It's also what's so great about this place we call America
Good evening. Top shelf Zach. Helping a family in need. I'm the kind of guy that if confronted about something negatively and with a closed mind and deaf ears I'll do it just to watch his/her/their head/heads twist in a knot.
It's always great to see neighbors pull together to help someone in need. As far as tillage goes, here in central MT we average 12-14 inches of moisture a year. So pulling a plow gives away too much mmmmmooooiiisture. I picked up a lot of yield when I got the equipment I needed to finally be able to park the cultivator for good. But I won't call you the devil for doing it. Different soils, weather and other conditions will always dictate what has to be done. Good luck finishing up. I got left with some snowed under wheat.
Could not agree more, one of my greatest experiences was helping out in the spring on a Cattle ranch in Colorado. Enjoyed it so much I volunteered to help the next 3 years.
100%, every kid should spend a summer on a working farm. Teach them about responsibility. Oh, don’t want to wake up on time when the alarm goes off? Then something doesn’t get fed all day, and it’s your fault. I think our country, especially right now, would be much better off.
I think its fantastic that the community came together to help a family that otherwise could have lost their crops. That's the beauty of a farming community, always willing to drop what they're doing to come to the aid of another in need.
I was born in central Wisconsin, my father talks about farmers coming together during the hard times. Unfortunately we are living in northern Illinois now running some land and the farmers here will would rather buy ur land then help out one afternoon. Myself being a young farmer and listening to all kinds of farmers all over the United States makes me feel like we have landed in the wrong place. My father talked about the old farm in Wisconsin more than the farm were running in northern Illinois. Breaks my heart for him, at this day an age we all should be working together no matter what. Thanks Millennial Farmer for your videos and your millennial wisdom.
Jake John I think that’s just a northern Illinois mindset. You take a drive a couple hours south into central and southern Illinois and most families would bend over backward to help a neighbor.
How can 90 people dislike this??? No one had to help that family farm out, but they put their farms on hold to do that, why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Problem with people these days, treat others the way you want to be treated. Bless ya Johnson family, and all the others that helped as well. You’re part of the back bone of America!

We have had many harvesting bees over the years in the Thief River Falls area for farm families in need. It is fun to see a large number of combines gather and get that farmer's crop off in one day. When the job is finished there is usually a Cenex fuel truck waiting to fill everyone's combine with diesel fuel. And throughout the day the ladies bring out good home-cooked meals.
Great video. It sure is meaningful to help people out like that. My dad had his artificial hip dislocate a couple times last fall. I was humbled to be on the receiving end to get our calves shipped. There's still a lot of good people out there. As far as tillage. I've really become a proponent of no till. We can only do small grains (forage), grass, alfalfa, and similar crops in our county so I can't speak for corn and beans. Our hay yields have stayed the same and we save a lot of fuel, time, and labor from not having to pick rocks. That said, I think tillage is an invaluable tool. We still have and use our tillage equipment in new and/or rough fields.
I remember when I was a little boy one of my daddy best friend was kill at work just a few feet from my daddy. The Saturday after his funeral my daddy and some other guys from work went out and cut wood for his widow so her and her young son would have wood to heat their house for the next few years.
