- This is a short demonstration of my Tek 4051 BASIC Simulator that runs on Windows. Feel free to ask any question in comments, or contact me (see the website shown in the video for contact information).
I have now created a Tek 4051 BASIC Facebook group. Demo and info both from the simulator and real 4051's (and 4052's and 4054's) will be posted there. Join the group to follow along.
And if you own one of these devices, please let me know. I occasionally have useful information to pass on about cartridge tapes, RAM drives, etc.
Update, June, 2017. I now have a working 4051! Getting old tapes to work is a problem. All the drive bands break after 30 years. But I was able to take a drive band from a DC600A tape and install it in an old DC300A I had. Also, someone at Vintage Tek is going to build up some RAM PACK's for sale. Not sure if there are any extra, but contact me ASAP if you are looking for one or want more information. And the simulator is still available. Hope to find some time to make some more fixes and improvements to it, but not sure when that will be.
Update: August, 2018. Version 0.13 of the 4051 BASIC simulator will be coming out soon. Contact me (see end of video) if you want to get it. Наука
Awesome! I worked in field service with Tektronix for 25 years. I worked on all the 405X series machines, all the graphics terminals (401X - 402X), printers, etc. as well as the micro-processor development systems. Watching your excellent 4051 simulator brought back a lot of memories!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to contact me if you want to try the simulator.
Very nice! Like that you have preserved the storage tube behavior and appearance (e.g. brighter point when drawing, flash when erasing screen). Used 4010 series in college during the 1970s.
Thanks, and yes, I put a lot of work into making the look and feel as close as possible. After this video was shot I added a start-up sequence that is fairly close to that of the 4051, with the screen staying bright until you press the PAGE key.
I'm late, but love it
Battlestar Galactica 1978. So does anyone have the code that drew the cylon fighters on the scanner?
Sort of. There's a guy on the Tek 4051 BASIC group who has some code that draws those, I think. I know it's something from the show it draws.
Very nice. We had one of these at home when I was growing up. I used it to go on Compuserve a few times. It was not ideal for that. Long text would wrap from bottom to top of the screen and write over what was already there.
I'd love to have a sound file of the 4051's BEL sound (ctrl-G)
Hi, Jonathan. Look me up (see end of video) and I'll send you the sound, or the simulator if you want.
any program available?
Great graphics behavior. Do you happen to have much information on the 4907 floppy disk - filesystem, etc.? Any plans to integrate that into your emulator?
+David Schmidt Hi, David. I used the 4907's back in the day, but don't have much information on them. Not sure what you mean by integrating into the emulator. I can do some simple file functions, such as simulating READ @33: to read values from an ASCII file.
Can I run someone's GDS on your simulator? I don't have GDS but I did use it in the early 1980s and I remember that one of the projects was the structural documentation of the Melbourne Tennis Centre (Rod Laver Arena) in Melbourne, Australia. GDS by ARC had monitor files, that could be edited such that if you made a big boo-boo you could edit the monitor file to remove the mistake and run the monitor file and it would re-run your session and stop before the error occurred. It was time travel in the early 1980s and pretty wild.
Not sure what you mean by GSD or GDS.
@@AurelianDesignSeattle I corrected the typo. Thanks.
Very cool. Will the source code be made available on GitHub etc?
Hi... Not at this time. FYI I'm almost ready to release another version (0.13) but need to do more testing when I have time.
In the late 1980's and early 90's was using PGPLOT under VMS Fortran with Tek Graphics Terminal (Spectral Data from the RGO Spectrograph & IPCS Image Photo Counting System) but never had the pleasure of using Tek 4051 BASIC.
Do you have version that will run on Windows 10/11?
I think I sent you the simulator a few years ago. It runs on Windows 10. I don't have Win11 so haven't tried it on that. Let me know if you want me to re-send it (and if you're email from then still works). If you can try it on Win11 it'd be good to know if it works.
@@AurelianDesignSeattle I looked and login that I have did not work.
@@FunpaCup Email me again and I'll send info on getting the latest version of the simulator.
Can you send a copy of emulator tek 4050 basic ?
I'll reply to your message on FB.
I’m still having my old Tek4051 (1974) and is still working.
If interested, send me your 4051 Basic programs and I ‘ll execute all of them on Tek 4051 in your preferred sequence but without any sound...
I’ll do a clip that I’ll transfer you via youtube
Hi, Jean. I've been able to run some programs on real 4051 here in the US, but thanks. And the simulator is to the point where I can run most anything I want on it.
