This game has one of the most complex rank systems I've ever seen in a game. What's funny is by forgoing all pickups you keep your rank really low which affects the HP and sometimes the patterns of enemies. I think Blackheart here died quicker than in most Superplays due to the low rank, lol. Just to be clear, low rank isn't bad. Superplays try to keep their rank low too. It's just the game's balancing mechanism to keep things interesting and keep enemies at an appropriate danger level for your skill/power ups.
Pretty cool seeing this and Armed Police Batrider from before getting played. Awesome fights, one of the best SHMUP music. I might not be great at them but even i know how well Raizing did on their games.

Only difference is that in other shmups enemies don't become smarter or bosses become bullet sponges just because you're powered up.
