The staging for this production was pretty barebones, especially at seven grand for some seats. I get this is an older show, but you can really breathe new life into older musicals with some creative set design and staging. It’s just all so flat and matter of fact in this iteration.
The version in the film---obviously the only one you've ever seen--is a truncated version of the full song (which is why it seems oddly short in the film). But rather than assume or deduce your own ignorance, you leapt at the chance to promote your OWN sociopolitical agenda.
Sigh…now that there’s footage of them both surfacing, I’m about to get flack for saying it, but I’m sorry, Sutton wasn’t right for this role. Never was, never will be. Hugh is serviceable, but I think he would have been better had he done it against someone who’s actually right for Marian and who didn’t treat every line as going for the comic punchline. I love her, but the line between interesting casting and totally miscast was crossed in this case.
Footage versus in person is very different. Being in the room with them was a completely different experience. These bootlegs don’t convey the acting very well because they’re acting for a room of people instead of a camera
@@snd5258 As a theatre professional myself, I’m aware of all that. But I’m talking about the performance as a whole. Sutton is making all sorts of incorrect choices, doesn’t matter what the medium is.
@@jennhiemstra that’s your opinion and I respect that, but personally I thought it was a very good stylistic choice that she made for Marian. She made her version stick out a little from the rest and I respect that
I know...we don't need a "quirky" Marian. She wasn't written to be that. but rather Harold's witty equal. And this is off topic, but these lyric changes are horrific omg.
The whole production and its performances lack any subtlety or sophistication; it's raw, heavy-handed, and clumsy. Opportunities sloughed off at every line. The cumulative effect is less apt than many community productions.

I love this show. I love most things Hugh and (excepting this) all things Sutton. And yet, I can't understand or enjoy 99% of this production.
