    || PILI KOLA || KAUP “Pili Kola” is historically popular and is one of the prime rituals among the worshiping of deities in Tulunadu. This traditional Pili Kola celebration takes place in the premises of Shri Brahma Muggerkala Huli Chamundi temple in Kaup, Udupi Taluk once in every two years. The ancient beliefs on this are still in practice and attract more and more people among the young generation. The grandeur and action of the person who wears this tiger costume surprises many that come to see this. Though there is belief that whoever gets touched by this person wearing the costume will die, the youth still run around this teasingly and have fun. The story behind this tradition is that, Bhairasoodava, the King of Karkala used to worship 1,001 deities along with tiger deity. Later he got two tigers through his hunter Mugera and was worshiping. When he lost his kingdom he sent the tigers to Kaup and when he asked Hale Maariamma for a place for the tigers to live, she gave a place near Maarigudi. In the Kaup Pili Kola the person to wear the costume will be decided in the presence of Maariamma Devi. The person who is going to wear the costume shall observe clean habits and live in the temple premises. As per the tradition, prior to the Kola he shall take bath, wear costume, paint on his body and shall enter the cage. After getting the permission of Patel of the village he shall come out of the cage, go around and then takes live chicken as its sacrifice. Then this tiger costume person goes around in the village for hunting. In order to escape from being touched by it, people run away from it. Since there is belief that people touched by this tiger costume will die, people obviously run away from it. There is tradition that the tiger has to touch at least one person. By end of the day the Kola concludes. This Pili Kola has been the tradition of Tulunadu and is a folklore celebration which is done with fear and great devotion from generations. It is a notable fact that in spite of modern life style this traditional celebration has continued and has found its own significance in Tulunadu.
