🎉congrats. When I got my black belt last year, I was expecting the biggest congrats from the lower belts. To my surprise it came from the other black belts. I realised that even as an aspirational target, it’s just not a big deal to others when you get your black belt, it’s big to you and it’s big to those that understand the commitment it takes to get there. If you’re doing it for acclaim, you wont be happy at the end because 99.99% of people don’t know the work required, so don’t give a fuck. These things are worth doing for you and you alone.
Massive congrats and well said. One of my black belt instructors said he felt like he only just started truly understanding BJJ once he got his black belt. One belt off black myself and I think I’m finally starting to understand what he meant.
2months ago I was diagnosed with heart failure - with the prognosis that if the heavy duty meds don’t work I have 6 mths left. My heart is only pumping at 50% but I’m fit & have no symptoms- as yet - so I’m still at the gym looking for gains - nothing has changed in n someways & yet I’m wondering when will the day come that I can’t lift anymore and I’m a bonafide sick person. 2024 has become my watershed moment I’m not worried so much about how long I have but am totally terrified of a slow decline into being an invalid, unable to breathe, swollen limbs & difficulty walking, so I try to keep the belief that as I’m already an outlier without the normal symptoms maybe I’ll defy the normal prognosis & continue to live a full life for many years & die of something unrelated.
that is not how heart failure works. If the EF is 50, that is not great but not terrible, if it is 30-35% which would be pumping half of the normal, that would just indicate the amount of medication and intervention. Heart failure is a stochastic condition, the worse it is, the more likely other problems can happen, but there is no "6 months left".
@@sciencefliestothemoon2305 it’s actually 25 for the left ventricle which is half what it should be - I just used the simpler 50% for expediency - the cardiologist gave me the prognosis of 6mths - which I was surprised at such a defined parameter - rather than a variable estimate. I familiar with how ejection fraction works and understand the effects of reduced function - my main takeaway is that my illness doesn’t have to proceed as forecast based on averages -I can be the exception

Congrats on the brown belt James! I’ve taken a break from Jiu jitsu for the past year but your videos have inspired me to go back this week. All the best.
Good book to read is Bounce. Congrats on the BJJ brown belt. I’ve done it for 10 years and currently a brown belt and still going strong. Love the sport. Whenever a white belt asks me how I got to brown belt, I tell them to keep turning up and take care of any injuries. Also changed my gym training adding in BJJ specific items using Scramble grips and fat grips. Plus studying Japanese as a hobby - 1 hour a day self study, 2 lessons a week and supplemented with some Apps while on the tube. Message is spot on. Be consistent and get a routine. As the Japanese say, 頑張ってください! (please try your best).
James, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your work! I really like your realness, as watching your videos - I really feel that I listen to a human, who doesn't want to trick me! Thank you one more time!
Almost got my blue belt and won some medals in white belt comps since starting BJJ last September. Jiu jitsu is the first time I’ve found something in life where if you put 100% effort into something you get 100% recognition from your peers around you. I’ve never felt that from school before, never felt that at work and I rarely get recognition for my effort from the commercial gym I go to. People seem to really recognise and appreciate when you are improving. I have found that people don’t hold back telling you this too which creates such a positive environment to be in.
Thank you for this video - it came at the perfect time for me. I keep looking at content creators that have been in the game for years and thinking I'm not good enough. When you said, everyone had to start with zero views and zero subscribers, I realized I was looking at it the wrong way. Thanks for the reset :)
Very powerful. It's interesting when you switch your mindset to have values, it tends to also become less about you, the individual. Removing yourself from selfish goals comes with taking responsibility. Thanks for this. Happy this is the first video I've watched in 2024.
Really appreciate your comments and insight James. Your words means so much to me as I take my journey from Blue Belt onwards. Thank you so much !!!!!!
This is so good. I think this idea used to scare me. That I didn't need to be special, or even that capable, but I just needed to put in the mundane and daily work. I think it is easier to believe that great people are different in some way, as it allowed me to stay where I was. Courage to ACT really is the way. Cheers James!
Congrats on your promo mate so good to see people level up! I got my blue in 2018 and I’m still chasing purple, Covid, injury and of course periods of time I just couldn’t be bothered has set me back. Last year was the most consistent I’ve trained for years and I’m closer than ever to getting rid of that old blue belt. Your videos definitely gave me the push to get back on the mat so thanks!!
@@shaneroberts2492 thanks bro. Yeh was a pretty epic moment. I still haven’t absorbed it fully. If you have trust in your coach he will know when your ready.
I often wonder why people just go to the gym when there are so many sports you can partake in. Its an important point to make that, In my view, you'll likely get more out of doing a sport or some activity (for me its running) where by the aesthetic of how you look is the least important part of why you do it. I do work out in the gym, but I do this to aid my running as a result of this is that overall I do get the benefits that come with being fit and healthy and that does include a certain aesthetic in the way I look.
Good stuff. I've written 16 books in the last 6 years. In regard to believing, I say don't wait to believe until you act. You just need to move. Do it now, believe it later. We've all become outcome dependent. We want someone to promise results before we start.
Ah mate, the best video yet....thanks so much and happy new year to you! Thanks so much for the incredibly positive content you put out. You're changing lives you absolute human being you.
Congratulations on your brown belt . Well said about defining success . Showing up and being a good training partner in the end that is gold on the mats. Excellent. First video in 2024! I'll be back next month for another. I'd rather be doing than consuming... but that doesn't mean there is not great content out there. This is one of them!
I got my purple belt in August and it was a big achievement for me but the belt is only apart of the journey and the grind of jiu jitsu is what keep me going
John Danaher once said, and he probably wasn't the first person to ever say this, "People overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, but underestimate what they can accomplish in 5 years." On different scales, the same is true. If you do something for 30 minutes a day, don't expect a miracle in one month. But if you do something for 30 minutes a day for a year, you can see some measurable achievements.
Now that I'm older and have achieved many things, I have encountered that all achievements feel meh... And I rarely get that excitement of the thing to achieve anymore... something inside me says "what's the point?"... Now I get why older dogs don't run for the ball anymore, they realized there is no point 😆... So shit, what a downer.. I got existentialist with the years and life feels pretty pointless, so, I enjoy the simple things, a coffee in the morning, training, playing videogames, go fishing, listening to good music or podcast.. All of this is cheap and easy no struggle... and maybe that's alright..
I take your point, but if I was a millionaire I would still wear my Casio F-91W because I think of watches as functional items, and a £50,000 Rolex doesn't tell time any better than a £10 Casio... But I also realise I'm in the minority here!
Well done on the brown belt! And thanks for sharing the video. Loads of useful info 👍 I’m at the stage were I’m shit in front of a camera tbh. But like you say it’s about getting the reps in everyday!
I've always believed I'm an under achiever in life but never had the determination or desire to really change. I told myself to stop the moaning a few years ago as its all I did....but never changed anything! Improved my well being slightly as the years go on but never made any big changes in life in regards to jobs/careers. Hard to look ahead a see its doable

There's a lot of emphasis on hard work being the most important factor in success, when this couldn't be further from the truth. This is the time to then reevaluate the approach and make it easier on yourself - work smarter, not harder. I agree with the premise of just 30 mins a day, or even less than that. They only understand time and tension. One of the most important things to reach fitness goals is consistency, but it isn't enough to just be disciplined. You have to have the motivation and the benefit has to outweigh the cost.
