    Thanks for the insight on the MacBook Air! Good stuff. I understand it's not a device for professional use but I would like to use final cut pro occasionally to edit some family videos. I'm currently using iPad Air 2 and LumaFusion and it renders about 1:1 speed and has no issues scrubbing 2.7k videos. Would the Air perform similarly, better or worst?

      I think it’s because he records in 30fps then edits and exports at 24fps, and then watching it on RUclips, gives it that appearance, as we are used to 60fps.

    THANK YOU! I've had the i5 512GB MBA 2020 for a week now and it's been great for what I need it for. It hasn't overheated or had excessive fan use (i've only heard the fan go off once), and I average around 8-9h of battery for what I use it for. Do I expect to edit a ton of 4K video etc on this thing? No, cuz I would've bought the Pro for that. This serves my needs just fine, and the performance is snappy, the keyboard is solid, the screen is crisp and clear, and the sound is amazing. Everything you said in this video echoes my experience with the MBA 2020 i5 model.

    • @JayCatterson
      @JayCatterson 4 года назад +11

      dirt232323 I multitask a lot, like you said. Multiple tabs, word, excel, teams, google music running in the background, and this thing is still very snappy and doesn’t overheat or have excessive fan noise. The only time I hear fan noise is if I’m pushing the system, like editing RAW files or video on occasion. It still can do that, but it does take time. This is more for everyday work tasks that I mentioned above, not for media creation or heavy rendering. If your workflow involves those things, get the Pro (or even the iPad Pro).

    • @JayCatterson
      @JayCatterson 4 года назад +2

    Hello. My name is Joe Martinez. I just want to say, this was by far the most in-depth review on the 2020 MacBook Air. I have a mid 2010 13” MacBook Pro and it’s been a good laptop. But I realized I don’t need all the “pro” benefits because I am one of those casual users who only watches iTunes purchased movies, listen to music, do basic photo editing on Apple’s Photos app, email, web browsing, RUclips videos. Also I feel I didn’t need to spend the extra $$$ for another Pro laptop if I’m not going to use those Pro features. Your video helped make that decision and understand the processors pros & cons. So I ordered my Air with the i5 option with 16 gig memory and 1T SSD for my large music & video library. Thanks you for this video review 🤓

    I just packed mine up to send back to Apple. Ordered the i7 / 16GB which could be the issue- but I run a lot of work in Chrome AND do a lot of online meetings (mostly Zoom) with up to 75 people online. The fan ran so loud and so long that it reminded me of the early XPS/ Surface units. Even with the Air placed well away from microphones, I had glitchy performance and enough noise that people were asking if I was running water. While I do NOT do traditionally heavy "pro" work- I am holding out and hoping for the new pro's. I see people advising processor suppression- which seems to defeat the purpose. Hoping for better news in May.

    • @Virishking

      Barry Goldberg I hope the 16GB works out for you. I have the i5 8GB RAM version, I’d have bought the 16GB RAM if I could shell out the cash. What’s worked for me on Zoom (and for you if you need it) is the program “Turbo Switcher” which lets you turn off turbo boost. Keeps it running quietly and cool

    • @spencercarruth9706
      @spencercarruth9706 4 года назад +3

      Well, there’s part of your problem - Chrome and Zoom are horribly optimized apps, especially on macOS. Using other browsers such as Safari or Firefox nets the same experience while consuming less resources.

      @@spencercarruth9706 I switched to using Safari primarily on this new Air, and I'm actually enjoying it way more than Chrome. It just works better, and looks great on this screen (especially the way it optimizes web content to fully utilize the screen aspect ratio). And yeah, I notice huge Zoom meetings definitely make the fans turn on (which doesn't bug me because the fan is doing its job...); I try to use Teams whenever I can instead.

    I must say, my, or rather my g'f's experience with her 2020 MacBook air was terrible. After about 5 mins of working in apple mail sorting out emails the fans would kick in and just get louder and louder. They would persist even for a few minutes after she would stop using the computer. I checked the activity monitor and she was using no kore than 15% of the cpu and Apple mail was the only open software. Basically it is incapable of performing even basic functions without the fans going crazy. She had an I7 processor, 16gb ram and 512ssd and the result is not what we expected from a £1500 laptop. We then researched online only to find there is a major design flaw in the 200 MacBook air where the cooling fan is nowhere near the heatsink and thus is useless at dissipating heat. The is why the fans go off after hardly any use and would stay on for so long after she had closed it. Needless to say she contacted Apple tp return it and the CS Agent didn't in any way dispute it. Almost like he knew there are problems with these and like he's dealt with dozens of returns previously. Personally I cannot recommend anyone spend their hard earned cash on this attempt at a laptop with fans that are constantly going crazy....such a let down. (This is all said by someone who actually like Macs and have a 2010 pro and a 2015 air myself without any fan problems. Am just incredibly disappointed with this release and the obvious design flaw.)

    The laptop will be used mainly for Word, Excel, web browsing and that kind of apps.
    I was thinking of getting the $1799 MBP with the 10th gen i5/16GB RAM/512GB SSD, but now I'm thinking of getting the i5 MBA. Don't want the 8th gen MBP because of the old gen CPU. The price for the i5/16GB RAM/512GB SSD MBA is like couple hundred $ less than the MBP, IMO I would rather give a bit more to have better cooling and better CPU.

Small, light, fan-less and powerful enough for the 3D design that otherwise kicks the fan on. New motherboard and battery costs as much as a new 2020 Air, but I am seriously considering going with the repair due to the fan. Hate those things. My iPad pro is way more powerful and has no fan. Turbo Boost Switcher App to the rescue. According to the Author a single core at 100% activates turbo boost, and when over heating subsequent multicore use gets throttled. So I will disable turbo boost with the App and get quad core i5, as according to maxtech the 2020 with boost disabled is as fast as 2019 with full boost and fan noise. Still a sad fix but usable.

    Really hope Apple engineers are listening and taking notes. Having said that, late last year I finally did an honest assessment of my workload and found that I was using my iPad to get things done throughout the day far more often than my MacBook, enough so that paying the premium for an iPad Pro made more sense for me than upgrading to a new MacBook. This is something that may not have been true even as recently as 2-3 years but is decidedly so now, especially with the new features in iPadOS. I’ve since sold on my MacBook and use my iPad Pro day to day and feel like I’m missing nothing so far. There’s still a Mac Mini in the house in case we need it but I literally can’t recall the last time I booted it up.

    Tricky with the variables (time of day/demand on the network) but I struggled with a MBA 2017 Zoom with 50 odd folk on Friday afternoon (I was screen sharing) but my wife’s 2012 MBP was absolutely fine with a similar number (and we were screen sharing), this morning.
    When we upgrade, is Zoom-ing + screen sharing + presenting likely to be worth the MBP purchase or would a MBA with an i5 8 GB RAM be fine? Thanks, everyone.

I will be doing basic stuff and using iMovie every now and then (which I could actually do on my phone instead), but I do want my computer to last for a number of years (at least 5 like my old 2014 Air which I'm now giving to a family member. Thanks for your reply as I really want to know what's the important of the RAM. Not a lot of people have talked about moving it to 16GB for the 2020 Air (only the processor). Thanks!

    We know that is the source, and it doesn't' matter how less it runs hotter,, does it?
    Also, i never knew there was a 2020 version.., I got a 2019 MBA i5 and that's one with Retina display. I thought there was nothing else before the M1.

    People always want more, but for a $999 computer, it’s the best in class, when you take into consideration the OS, the GUI and the customer care afforded within the ecosystem. Cameras do need improving, but they aren’t exclusive. We just expect Apple to be a step up. Any upgraded camera would need to be engineered, and that would move the Air away from the $999 price point that Apple have worked hard to get it to.

    Man I have so much to say but I'll keep it brief. This is my second time watching your review (which is the best I've seen of the Air) and I very much agree with the front facing camera conundrum. If you use a MacBook the quality of the video is subpar. If you use an iPad in landscape, like so many of us - especially the 12.9" owners - do, the camera which is of great quality is off to the side. If you use your phone, you have a much smaller screen and are probably holding the device which is not ideal for extended sessions. So there really is great no option in Apple's entire lineup, which is a shame during our present quarantined reality.

    I am thinking of getting my first Macbook with the Air i3. Couple of questions, will I be able to effectively use microsoft Word, Excel etc consistently and have lots of tabs open on chrome/safari (if its better), watch the odd RUclips video etc. Would I be better off with Microsoft Surface Laptop which is around £100 more for same ssd. How long will the laptop roughly last, hoping for at least 4 years. I don't game, maybe the odd card games or online games, I don't edit. The biggest thing is will having lots of tabs open slow down the laptop or make it heat up more often. Thanks in advance

    Thank you for the informative and interesting videos. I’m currently considering to buy the i3 or the i5 MBA or to wait for the new base model of the MBP. As I prefer the aesthetics and light weight of the MBA and as the MBP might be a bit overkill for my relatively light workload the MBA might be the obvious choice. But as I also would like to be able to connect a 34 inch monitor to have multiple browser windows open side by side together with Spotify or a RUclips video I would like to ask if you think if it will run very warm?

      Whiskey Scene I haven’t made a real choice so far. I think the choice comes down to a lower temperature or a faster experience in the long run. To stay away from heating issues the i3 might be the safest choice. But I must say that I couldn’t hear any fan noise when I used several (native) apps next to each other on the i5 in the Apple Store. Last week I experienced the 120hz full screen and Face ID of the iPad pro which was quite amazing. With better support for an external monitor (perhaps in ios 14) it might cover my needs as well. Anyhow I will wait to see how the Covid 19 crisis will affect my work before I’ll buy a new iPad or MacBook.

    Also, I think 99% of the criticism (at least, from what I've seen/heard) is with Apple's intentionally limiting cooling (who installs a fan in a laptop but doesn't run a heatpipe to it?!) on the CPU. The specs would be solid for so many more people, if Apple hadn't made that stupid decision.
