Thank you for advocating NO TOUCHING! It's so very paramount in creating a strong image that speaks loudly as opposed to one that's been manipulated and beaten to death! I ate that smudgy powdery look that occurs! Thanks Alain for your true expressive style of working🙏🏻
Thank you Alain for another informative demonstration. I really get a lot from these tutorials especially because you are also explaining your thinking processes as you paint. This is exactly how I learn!
I'm back! Having taking one of your little classes a week or so ago, and using the pastels I had (Nupastel sticks and a friend's leftover Carb-Othello pencils, I looked at your recommendations for materials. Well, Sir, didn't Amazon have a sale on Sennilier soft half sticks? Didn't I order some? Yes and yes. Oh my word. What a difference that makes. Thank you thank you. I'll definitely keep watching you.
Finally had a chance to watch again and paint .Tried to pump up my color ,get rid of my phobia to pink, and to put down a mark and not touch it. Thank you so much for all the suggestions and your thinking process as you work. I am looking forward to more wonderful videos.
Well I am sorry Alain, your “dull” starting point is an awfully nice picture. I am envious of your “dull” example! I do appreciate you naming the pastels as you use them. Your final picture is miles above with such wonderful mark making! I want to have your mark making skills when I grow up! er. . . . Perhaps I can say when my pastel method matures! Thank you for showing us how you brighten up our paintings. Wonderful video I look forward to seeing you again soon!
Thank you, Alain! I always learn from your mark-making approach, occasional knocking back with a brush, and sparing use of blending using a finger. Your teaching-style is spot-on for the way I learn, and my paintings are progressing in ways I never imagined!
I'm so glad you said you don't put your fingers all over your marks ! I find my work to be fresher by leaving my fingers out of the mix other than to hold the pastel🙌🏻💥👍🏻👨🏻🎨
Thst was so helpful Alain you really transformed this painting and showed Thst not all is lost and to a great extent things can be remedied. It also showed how to do small expressive strokes to make a painting pop, to really observe how to observe what you are looking at in a reference photo and interpret it in s better way, invaluable
Just caught this! Wel, this time you shocked me by taking mud and making it beautiful! My thought at first was that you were going to wash the mud away and make it an underpainting and then go on top with a "punchy" color selection. You surprised me and showed me that mud could go beautiful. I appreciate again wanting us to learn to be brave not matter what the condition of our painting. Thank you!
This is a great video Alain. Very helpful because sometimes the values throw me off a bit, but color I always try to push a bit. I love my NuPastel in Spruce. I use it for a sketch as well sometimes. That pink is wonderful! And I love those hues. Really makes the landscape pop with interest!
Beautiful as usual of course but also just in time since I was working on a painting that has gotten dulled down by my over mixing the sky! It helped bring it back to life! Thank you so much Alain!
Thank you Alain, great advice. Yes our neutrals are so important to make our colour pop. Realising that more and more. Thx again for your time in making these tutorials, always look forward to them. 🙋🏼 Ros from Australia 🇦🇺
Great video, enjoy your work and your methods. Your techniques have really opened up possibilities in my work. Grateful you have been sharing your expertise.
Love it! I am fascinated by how you apply pastels, like leading an orchestral with your arms! The lights around the tree make it look like a Christmas tree, ttho'. What is a textured board? Do you prepare a board with gesso? As you can tell, I am a beginner! Thanks
Thank you Alain. Do you use fixatif on your finished work or do you store under plastic and frame with spacer? I appreciate your instructional painting demonstrations.
This was great. I have been trying to purchase your download videos repeatedly on Artists Network but the site doesnt allow me to subscribe or join. Is it because I am not in the United States? I've been so wanting to purchase the essential techniques for pastel portraits and techniques for painterly portraits download.
Alain, I just wanted to leave a separate comment about your work area/filming area, the three panel black area looks cleaner, more austere but I am wondering about the paper towel roll that was visible before, where you wiped the pastels on it before you made marks, is it just out of frame now? Or have you changed your method of working? And how are you keeping your pastels clean? Still trying to refine my work space and I am looking for anything that will help, thank you for sharing your expertise and have a wonderful day.
Thanks for an amazing video. I do have an un- related question, what tape do you use to attach you work to the board? I have tried several tapes and methods of pulling tape off but no matter how carefully I remove or reduce the tack of the tape I still end up with small areas of paper coming off. I use Art Spectrum colorfix paper and Artist tape.
Hello and thank you for another wonderful video. I'd also be interested in knowing paper used for painting. Looks like it's mounted on foam core. And I'm assuming you are using an assorted of pastel brands.
Hi Alain, Interestng process on brightening up a duller painting. I suppose its a matter of taste as well, as painting darkness is almost part of the styles as they evolve. Great execution in the painting. If you guys are looking for more landscape painting, check my channel at ShawNshawN. Thanks for sharing Alain. Hope to see more painting soon.
Another excellent demonstration. Thanks Alain! Your guidance is much appreciated. Can I ask what type of paper you do your thumbnails on? I like the effect you get with them.
That's very kind. Thanks so much Kerry! I use a toned gray or tan sketch pad from Strathmore (Strathmore Drawing 400 Series Toned Tan Sketch Pad, 5.5"x8.5", 50 Sheets)

I'm laughing about my dirty palette. How'd you know! I keep an old rag at the easel but I forget sometimes.

J’aime bien votre technique petites touches le résultat est très. Chouette c’est dommage ,je ne comprend pas vos explications
Tonalism is underappreciated imo.
