Jim Carrey said that he would return if the script was good. Turns out the script was good enough for him to not only return, but to play two characters, so that's exciting.
And yes, Professor Gerald Robotnik is from the games. He's Robotnik's grandfather who created Shadow. On the Sonic the Hedgehog RUclips Channel they recently released a video called "Shadow 101" which explains Shadow's backstory in 3 minutes. Professor Gerald Robotnik is explained there as well.
