I taught English using this type of methodology. It is so beautiful to watch adults blossom into a new language. My students mostly had a lot of hardships to deal with in life but class was always such a lively and fun place. Even when the topic was dark, there'd be humor. I'm learning German now. This is so refreshing after all the word list videos.
The secret to learning another language is to LIVE in that language. I am an English Second Language teacher in Canada and in my class there are 2 Mexican students, a young married couple who speak ONLY English between themselves; never Spanish! Their English has improved dramatically. I, myself am relearning German that I learned in high school 50 years ago and I try to incorporate German into my daily life; listening to Assimil recordings, watching the news on TV, doing grammar exercises, writing exercises where I have to look up words in the online dictionary, listening to German opera learning the lyrics and watching documentaries such as this one. It works! Basically the less of your mother tongue you speak in a day and the more you live in the language you want to learn, the faster and more efficiently you will get there.
The same thing is happening to me Marlom :( read and talk are two different thing but I will keep trying, maybe one day I will be able to speak good Deutsch :) I like this video because is showing me that there are more people struggling somewhere but they are putting the time and effort to learn. I wish them the best! they really need the language for their daily life . By the way, my interest of learn German is just a hobby as well as English.
I am an English speaker relearning German. I learned it 50 years ago in high school and loved and still love the language. One thing that I think is important is sitting down and memorizing all the article endings used in the various cases in the singular and plural (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive) (der, die, das, dem, der, dem, des, ein, eine, eines, einer, einem etc..). Then, one needs to add adjectives in each example. I think there are about 50 variations. But there are patterns so although it takes some practice, it really helps.
I was an American soldier in Germany for over three years. The language barrier was quickly overcome with effort. Immigrants who "can't" learn German just aren't trying. Although I suppose I was at a slight advantage having English as a first language. I can imagine trying to learn German as a native Persian or Arabic speaker would be quite a challenge. Persian was very, very difficult for me to grasp and I could only understand a few phrases that I memorized from training for Afghanistan.
Three years are plenty for being able to conversate in a new language, especially when you have to talk to native speakers everyday. I guess it's hard for people who don't have the cultural habit to practice speaking with random strangers on the street. They had to have a 'reason' to do so. It's especially vivid in Asian countries where people are afraid to embarrass themselves by showing their incompetent skills. This is just an insight on how Asian immigrants might have trouble learning German, doesn't apply to everyone though.
Goodspittin My grandparents met in Germany, my grandfather was in the army and my grandma was a bartender for the men in service, he would sneak from his post a lot to see her, he was the only one at the bar who didn't drink because he was saving his money to send back home. They got married and had 5 kids and in 2006 he died of cancer.
I can read in German quite well. For me the pronunciation is no problem, but when it comes to talking, it's a nightmare. I've been studying it for two years now, but I still don't feel comfortable talking to people.
Marlom Ruivvo maybe we could practice together:) i been studying by myself for a year and i do most writing but i also have many friends in germany. where are you from?
Hannah Orellana It has been a month Since I am here in Cologne. I have come here on a DAAD scholarship to pursue my masters. I am talking some classes now. Guys add me to your Skype conversations. My Skype: cciedotmustafa
I undersrand u,also I can read and write but I'm shy to talk...Especially when I stayed in Germany and somebody smile or corrects me then I just talk in english after that...
I don't understand something... You live in a foreign country for 20 years, and don't even learn the basics of the local language? How is that even possible?
English subs unusable. Englsih speakers who don't understand German don't waste your time. Subs should either be well done or not be there at all. I guess they were made using some audio transcription engine which results in a this pile of incoherence. The film seems very attractive but for the aformention issue it gets tiresome after a while.
+Nikola Golemovic sorry for the super late reply, but you've misread my comment. I never said there weren't any, but that the subtitles look like they were just throw into google translate because there are more mistakes than right translations.

I don't understand something... You live in a foreign country for 20 years, and don't even learn the basics of the local language? How is that even possible?
I was wondering the same thing. Like, you should know at least the basics by now. Why are you even taking the class?
gut sehr schön
Why does it say "English & German Subtitles", Can't see any subtitles
Clara Van Biesebroeck you have to turn them on

+Nikola Golemovic sorry for the super late reply, but you've misread my comment. I never said there weren't any, but that the subtitles look like they were just throw into google translate because there are more mistakes than right translations.
