On my computer I use a pair of headphones (sennheiser 280 pro) for everything except for zoom calls. For that I use some basic 20$ gaming headphones.

I have actually had searing pain in one of my ears with no ear wax. Turns out, you can actually get something similar to a blister/pimple on your eardrums. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about except wait for it to rupture and pray that it happens quickly. Once it happens though, Instant relief.
I have swollen ear canals and get ear aches quite often. I can't wear headphones for too long or they'll start hurting really bad. My hearing has gotten worse if anything. I've learned to read lips pretty well tho which is good!
*Do not put Q-tips in your ear.* Most of the time you're just pushing wax deeper into the ear canal where it can compact and form a wax plug. If you have a problem with ear wax put 2-3 drops of olive oil (yes, just olive oil) into your ear 2-3 times a day for 2-3 weeks. Keep your head lying flat with the affected ear up for ~ten minutes after dropping in the oil to allow it to soak into the wax and soften it. You'll get some run-off from the ear so your lobe may feel oily afterward.
