EXCELLENT Talk. Every teenager should hear this multiple times and years before entering college (or whatever they would like to pursue!). Don't find out mid-life like I did.
Ryan, Your talk is so timely for me...I'm feeling the signs pointing me away from corporate America where I've built a comfortable lifestyle. I'm no longer motivated by the "paid work" but more with my passion of helping others.
Ted Imes hi you! I've watched and then going down and seeing your comment. I really want to know who are you being now? Did you change to become a person you want and now what do you think a bout your changing? Thank u!
Man... I'm going through this right now. Smh!!! I realized that all that ish that we were taught as kids was a lie. It sucks that you have to travel years down a road before you realize it's time to pivot or change directions. :/
Hi Ryan, I enjoyed the talk as much as you did. I’m curious what path did you take being that we are 5years since your thought? I am hopeful that you’ve found a fulfilling career I could perhaps pick up a few insights from you, thanks!
I'm teaching a career exploration class for college students this semester and stumbled upon this video, I think I'm going to show this on the first day of class as a transition into talking about the important of knowing one's values in their career development. Thank you!
I'm preparing to teach my career exploration class again and will show this video on the first day of class like I did last year since it resonated with many students. Do you have any other recommendations for good TED talks or videos related to career exploration that could be encouraging/inspirational for college students?
Ryan seems like a nice guy. Passionate. Honest. I'm sure everything he says in this talk resonated with him at that time in his life. Looking at his LinkedIn profile, I see at the time he had quit the law grind to become an advisor to start-up businesses and entrepreneurs. But he only stuck with this for 3 years, because I can tell you, there's no money in what he was doing. Trust me, I work in this space. He then went on to earn more degrees in law, at Duke no less. And today he teaches business law at the University of Calgary. So align fulfilment with something that pays. You'll be happier. Flow might follow.
I am so fulfilled and love what I do as a pediatric optometrist, but I almost tried to become a professional flute player. Thank goodness I realized it wasn't for me. I thought I love music and people who play music love what they do. Therefore it would make me happy. I started analyzing my day would be 8hrs of practicing and then performing. I hated practicing!! Performing made me feel so nauseated. Even though I love music that wasn't how I wanted my life to be. Many optometrists hate what we do because it is repetitive and wish they would have done something else. To me there is nothing so special as seeing a child see for the first time 😎
That's why I considered applying for music conservatory but didn't. I have tried being an RUclips artist but I'm miserable. I'm pursuing music again b/c my GPA messed up, but I'm not just practicing but also studying songwriting and music production. There are many songs out there that sound good and not enough meaningful and inspiring songs, and that's what I hope to make.
Hi, music major here. No doubt that I love music and I am better than the average person at it, but I know how you feel about practicing - I don't have the drive to practice for even 2 hours! That's why I never wanted to become a performance major. I study music production, but I'm starting to think that twiddling with sounds alone in a small and soundproofed room sounds isolating and quite depressing even though I really like learning about the concepts and working with tech, so I'm considering working with live sound. However lately I think I found something I could work for hours on end repeatedly and think about it all the time, and it's events planning/management! I'm also considering working in that industry and study that further for graduate studies.
A career is a balancing act between life satisfaction, life style, and commitment. There is nothing more uniquely you than to choose how you want to live
Your car getting stolen was a sign from the universe pointing you in the right direction. Fulfillment comes from freedom in time, creativity, and helping others. Awesome message to share!
I'm going through a crisis about being too passive in pursuing my career path and this talk was way more worth my time than a lot of the other Ted talks I've seen. This was refreshing. Thank you!
Loved this. Especially the "flow" part. I've experienced that. And the "push and pull" thought recently came to my mind out of nowhere, and you phrased it perfectly.
booooii am I relating to this at the moment, Im a high school graduate and I surely feel the pressure and anxiety of choosing a major thatll land me a job. When in reality, I should look at what I get easily engaged in and see if i can experience that everyday in the career i choose. This talk is worth gold to me at the moment, as Im experiencing exactly what u have experienced 6 years ago. Appreciate it!
I have watched so many career videos on how to achieve fulfilment and this was so beautifully and clearly explained! Will definitely refer back this video! ❤
Ryan, This was FABULOUS!!! I wish I had seen this 20+ years ago! You look wonderful and I'm so happy for you that you were BRAVE enough to take the leap into something new and so fulfilling!... not to mention insightful enough to figure "it" all out! I hope you and your family are all well!
I certainly agree that we should all examine our own values, we should find our own passions, and we should all strive for fulfilling lives. Absolutely. But I disagree that there is a “fulfilling career for everyone.” Not always does a person’s passion translate into an ability to make money or to put food on the table for a family. Deep down I think we all do realize this. Herman Melville was one of the greatest authors of the 19th century, but his works went unrecognized and unappreciated until after he had passed away. Pierre de Fermat, one of the greatest mathematicians of all times, did math as a hobby - his “day job” was as a political functionary. And those are the geniuses: obviously others not so gifted also have passions which don’t put bread on the table. That doesn’t mean not to find one’s calling; that doesn’t mean to work constantly and to never feel fulfilled. What it means is that sometimes a person has to work at a less exciting job - one that won’t eat up every hour of the day or night - and follow his passion in the in between times.
In my experience staying up late to do work because I actually enjoyed it was the reason for my eventual burnout. Even if you enjoy work I think you should still close the laptop after a certain point. This was a big lesson for me and something I never want to repeat again. Recovering form burnout is long and dreadful but I'm working on it.
Very inspiring. I want to make this work in my life. A few more concrete examples of this in action would be helpful to see how people map out their values and implement them in heart driven, fulfilling work. Great talk Ryan, thanks!
Im a masters student studying development and business. I also want fulfilment and my aim in life is to help people on a large scale. However, like he said, Im not sure how I'm going to do it... Perhaps work in various different think tanks / Development organisations and maybe later start up my own charity.. I don't know.. but the intention is there and I know I'll get there! Thanks for the talk it was helpful.
School make people to be robots ,measure our value base on score ,and how likely you do exactly the teacher want you to do .Instead , school doesn’t teach what is really important for life : know your personality , Jobs discovery , basic psychology, basic medical knowledge , Food production process , basic survival skills l critical thinking , empathy ,mental health regulations , environmental awareness. After graduation, society makes people focus on money instead of other aspects like mental health, value for life , empathy , creativity , critical thinking , system improvement(School , laws , government etc.)
thanks for sharing, Ryan !! the things you share was really practical and straight to the point !! one thing to keep in mind, is to stay conscious from being influenced by the pressure from parents or elders in the family. its actually be kinda difficult for our parents to understand the situation that we're in, just that we'll need to let them know we're determined to figure out what to do with our career life :)
Go for real meaning. Be receptive to the idea of a 'calling' - like being advised from the voice within. "Be concerned with the needs of the age ye live in, and center your deliberations on its exigencies and requirements." ~ Baha'u'llah, Baha'i Faith
So the take home message is, follow the path in the beginning to find a decent job with a decent income, but get out before your 30's to follow your vision, because gutting your life and rebuilding it from scratch is a lot easier after a few years of a large law firm putting cash into your 401k!
I do have push motivation. External rewards can push me to get stuff done. I've tried RUclips b/c I have artistic skills that I can make use of. I didn't do it for money but for views, but my views are minimal so my motivation dropped and I have decided to quit next year b/c I got more important stuff to do. As for my dream, I had a strong desire to go into academia but unfortunately my GPA messed up so I ruined the odds. I'm pursuring music industry but that's tough too.
You have to think of opportunity costs when going into your career. Sure, you might make 300,000 a year, but if you hate your career and aren’t happy in life, and you could have a career that you love that pays 100,000 a year, then your happiness is worth 200,000 a year. You need to find what truly matters, and if it’s money and 200,000 sounds like enough to be unhappy, then go for the money. But if 200,000 sounds worse than happiness then go for the other career.
The problem is that when I try to write the list down like he did, nothing comes out. Im just unmotivated to do anything, nothing fulfills me, I dont feel like doing anything.
He is a great speaker but there is nothing new in this message. We have been saying the same things, in the same way, in over a century of Career Psychology and at career centers. You just have to make your way to those resources. While career centers are changing in order to be more visible, you also have to be proactive in finding the resources you need.
You don’t need that vacation - what you’re never really happy apart from when you’re on holiday abroad, having fun and meeting people? I mean you have a nice house and all but whenever you get home from travelling you realise how grey and miserable your “home” is?
Personally, I think he's wrong. It IS about how much money you make. This is why we work. To earn enough money, to have, or maintain a desired lifestyle. If we don't earn "enough", then we have two options. Make more, to maintain your desired lifestyle, or scale back to be in line, with the money you earn. Doing something because you want to, not because you have to, is called a "hobby". Hobbies don't pay the bills. If they do, they are no longer hobbies, and more than likely, are not enjoyed. The majority of us, don't have this luxury.
Seriously schools our days teach how to read and write what about the laws and doing laundry and all those sort of things. I see that they think our parents should teach us that but then what's the point of school? School is a place where we should learn about life and not things that we are not going to use so I know I am not going to use math in the career I am working on so why should I keep learning about it? It makes absolutely no sense! Aren't teachers supposed to be smart and help us? They are the dumb ones! But really imagine you want to be a write do you really have to do math? WTF how does this education make sense to them! #WorstEducation
EXCELLENT Talk. Every teenager should hear this multiple times and years before entering college (or whatever they would like to pursue!). Don't find out mid-life like I did.
Fulfillment is whether or not you feel the work you do is meaningful!
thx for the Ted talk..... GET IT TED ?!
As a person who made a career out of meaningless work it’s like eating junk food and expecting to be satisfied..
Ryan,
Your talk is so timely for me...I'm feeling the signs pointing me away from corporate America where I've built a comfortable lifestyle. I'm no longer motivated by the "paid work" but more with my passion of helping others.

At this point being an almost graduate, this tedtalk is hands down the best I've seen so far and exactly what I was looking for . He is soo relatable!
Best Ted talk on this subject I’ve heard so far great speaker and message !
