Wendy was special because she was the only girl on the island. The lost boys considered her their adoptive mother. If there were other girls there, nobody would have cared when Wendy showed up.
The point of the original Peter Pan was basically that boys need their mothers to become real men. Without a mother, Peter Pan and his lost Boys remained perpetually children, which the book made quite clear is not a good thing, because Peter Pan is a massive asshole in the original text.... making Wendy just 'one of the guys' completely negates the point of the story, ruins her character, and robs any thematic weight the story once had. So really you have to wonder what chucklefuck wrote this script, because you can tell from the trailer that they kept nothing of any importance....
One time, I accidentally stumbled upon a guro hentai. It depicted a woman who inserted a hook inside her vagina and then proceeded to skin her whole body by pulling as hard as she could in a single motion! The result of her efforts were horrendous.... I want this to happen to Kathleen Kennedy and her ilk.
The Lost Boys were a commentary on a segment of young orphans who were living on the street and often engaged in criminal activity, and how they were "lost" from a society that had essentially thrown them away. The reason it was boys is because girls were more likely to either be adopted or taken on as servants, so they were less likely to end up on the street. These boys often never grew up, because they would die young. So when the end of the film comes and they come back to "society," it was a big deal. This was a Victorian and Edwardian issue, as industrialization grew the harshness of the lives of these boys became a social issue and yes, charitable groups took this up. That's why today it's a name given to the boys kicked out of FLDS Mormon polygamous groups in the US, as they are tossed from the community with nothing but what they can carry and limited support. So now they're just... Kids? Doesn't have the same meaning. They could have used this to educate on this historical problem, but instead... Equality?
Disney - "theres a Book?" we just watched the cartoon and Robin Williams, nobody mentioned a book. Does this mean we'll have to learn to read? Don't worry, It'll be fine.
Hook was the Peter pan film "for modern audiences" which did that sort of thing right. Continued the story instead of retreading or rebooting, continues the themes with slight alternations keeping the same lighthearted feel and doesn't confuse audiences by changing that. Doesn't race or gender swamp main characters, introduces new characters that complement the old without belittling them and adds new elements to existing characters. Oh and it did this all without alienating existing fans or new viewers.
it helped that they cast really good actors; Maggie Smith as Wendy, Robin Williams as Peter, Dustin Hoffman as Hook. plus as you say they didn't monkey with the source material but built on the existing story.
The whole point of Wendy being so important to Peter and the boys is that ..they all missed mom. She was the only girl around since forever and they loved her as a sort of "mom" in a way. Having lost girls would defeat the purpose I think
Honestly, there was a whole tribe of native women...if they were going to remove this aspect of the story from Wendy all of those moms could have made the point that the lost boys needed moms and encouraged Wendy to accept her womanhood. But these hacks...
@@xenxander yeah but I'm saying diverse representation was right there and heck those native men could be something more than boogie men...what a waste
Well maybe not. If the kids group have the same purpous, but they will be more of a Lost Children. Little girls, and boys needed a older figure. But this movie will never did ut. Look het. LOOK Inclusive.
Necromancy makes it sound like way more care and effort was put in. This is propping the corpse up in a chair and using ventriloquism to speak for it, then pretending it's Necromancy.
i mean like, the little mermaid is super cool in concept, underwater scenes? thats super interesting. atlantis: the lost empire would look amazing in live action as would treasure planet.
Wendy is a central figure in the story of Peter Pan because of her womanhood. Nevermind the fact that she is supposed to be the only girl there (they bring her to Neverland to be the Lost Boys' mother) but there's an interpretation of the story that views the story through Wendy's lens. Her adventure to Neverland occurs right when she is nearly too old to remain in the nursery. She is on the cusp of womanhood and this interpretation provides a very interesting view of her experiences in that other world and her embracing the role of a mother. And then we can review some of her interactions with some of the other characters, like when Peter asks her for a kiss but she gives him a thimble. But it also plays a role in the jealousy that Tinkerbell has toward her. I think removing some of that 'coming of age' aspect of Wendy's story arc is something of a crime in any Peter Pan tale. It is partly what makes the story more compelling, especially when Wendy ultimately chooses to grow up.
Yes, this is THE central theme of the story! Wendy wanting not to grow up but then eventually learning to accept womanhood and choosing to grow up after all TT
When Wendy turned on her lightsaber and screamed "The Force is female!" at the top of her lungs and took down two grown men, I was on the edge of my seat!

Having a woman play Peter Pan in the original plays wasn’t about social justice. It was logical. If you want an experienced actor to lead your show, but also not be a grown up, you use a woman. Their voices are higher and their body frames are smaller. Casting an experienced male actor with a mature, deep voice would be silly, and trying to find an 11 year old male to lead your play would be a disaster.

Further proof they modern Hollywood doesn't know how to write a strong woman without turning her into a man. Feminism has destroyed femininity. Wendy was a strong character in the fact that she was a guiding light for the lost boys and Pan. She was a maternal figure. She was their grounding in reality that they couldn't just play pretend forever and had to grow up. Now she's just a generic girl-boss who can swordfight pirates 3x her size. Amazing. Score another one for feminism. Turning women into men. Truly a victory for women.
They also can't make a woman look strong without denigrating all the men around her. Implying that to be strong is to bully and beat down all those around you, which is displayed both literally by the characters on screen and metaphorically by the writers.
Feminism doesn't have anything to do with what happens with this movie. Feminism is what allowed the wendy version of the 2003 peter pan movie, in which wendy had the dream of becoming an adventure novelist, something not very well seen at the time for women. And she was still wendy and a well constructed character.
@@mmecharlotte or they are written as weak/" basic". But no, they had to make stella and bloom rivals over a guy and dress everyone horribly and make everything dark and gritty. People in tv need to look back at charmed and buffy and magical girl type cartoons and remember that you can have a female characters who likes glitter and pretty feminine fashion, who may be introverted or shy, etc, and also can kick ass all at the same time in one sense or another. Because animated disney wendy might not be able to sword fight, but she slashed with words, the way she talked to everyone , calling out their bs with 0 fear XD.

We already had a live action Peter Pan movie, it was called hook with the late Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts. And as I remember the lost boys were extremely diverse. It was literally a perfect adaptation to a classic movie. Anything else will be mediocre
@mobbs6426 think she wasn't btchy enough was because she was older and became less jealous since Peter grew up. She wasn't a child like fairy anymore.
7:30 my thoughts exactly. If they want representation there are thousands of myths and folk tales hailing from peoples of all demographics. Why is it so difficult to do one of those? Moana may not be my favorite Disney animated movie but that is an excellent example of representation done properly and people loved it. People want new stories now more than ever.
Lilo and Stitch is another perfect example of a culturally diverse film done right. as a matter of fact i don't think there's a single white person in that film, and i never even thought about that until now, because its never been a problem since it was an original story that took place in a realistic and more importantly; _BELIEVABLE_ cultural setting. can you imagine the screams and outrage if someone did a live action version of Lilo and Stitch and replaced the native hawaiians with white people?
Because of lack of creativity, obviously. It's easier to change the already exist interesting stories instead of creating whole new ones. Lack of confidence, too.
My favorite character in the 'Hook' movie was Rufio and he was Polynesian I think. Race was never an issue until they threw a spotlight down ontop of it.
When Hook and Pan reveal their love for each other in the middle of that Lozt Boys orgy was truly stunning and brave. My wife's boyfriend and I cried so much.
Good point. I wonder how much the little girls like the raunchy sex part.... Because historically, y'know... We can't let them complain, after the fact, when they find out, it's not for girls. They knew they weren't welcome.
@@lilithiaabendstern6303 so it’s ok to change? Lets see, Netflix made a whole play of Madison with the main character was portrayed as black. So if this is ok, Black Panther can be cast as a white man? Or MLK can be a white man? Check your reasoning before you say “it can be so”

We already have two good live-action adaptations of Peter Pan: Hook (1991), with Robin Williams and the Peter Pan (2003) live action starring Jeremy Sumpter. The Hook (1991) film asks: what if Peter chose to grow up and left Neverland? It's an interesting concept because of his relationship with the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell upon his return and having to make the choice of going back to reality or staying in the fantasy of Neverland. Peter Pan (2003) is a great adaptation as it stayed true to the main story. I really liked the addition of the scene where Peter reunites with Wendy when she's grown up and has become a mother. It gives the audience a hint that Peter may have regretted his choice not to grow up, yet he sticks to his decision to never grow old. Unless this new adaptation is going to add something new to the story that wasn't already explored in the previous adaptations, I don't see the point of this film aside from race/gender swapping. If these are the only changes, it comes off as shallow and boring. Give us something new and original, please!
Hook 1991 was really an interesting movie. The storytelling along with it is intriguing. I really love the scene. Especially the Lost boys (they're like a thousand of them) The Ending scene was badass and rebelious. BANGARANG !
But that would not fit with the current narrative, where women are GODS AMOUNG THE SUB HUMAN MEN!!!!!! Where a 90 pound girl could defeat grown men in feats of strength and skill
What I love about the original Wendy (and heck even the movie Neverland) was that Wendy was the only girl- the voice of reason, she was warm and compassionate- she didn't have to be a sword wielding girlboss because she already 'better' than the lost boys in terms of maturity and wisdom. The original Wendy KNEW that growing up, having a family, watching your kids grow was, itself, magical. She chose the magic of the EVERYDAY over pirates and mermaids. That, I think, was the whole point of the story. Choosing to leave Neverland and find the magic in the mundane. This new Wendy will be hard to convince to leave since she seems to be having a great time. I wouldn't be surprised if they ret-conned the ending where she stays as the new 'captain'- totally undermining the original message.
Fun fact : Hook was described as ugly and nearly corpse-like in the novel, he was essentially a grotesque caricature of what Peter Pan fears the most: aging.
I loved this story as a child. They are now trying to… Barrie the original. 😉 Hurry up and watch the Disparu take because Disney has been slapping copyright violations around to shut people up.
Someone should sue Disney for transformative changes. I know Disney is wealthier than god so it probably wouldn’t work but it’d be nice to see someone stand up to them.
Exactly!!! Wendy's arc is the epitome of a feminine power overcoming the pitfalls of masculine fantasy. Literally their whole message. Yet it was written nowadays so they have to shoehorn modern politics in even tho with a good writer they could meet said goals. I'm just at the point where I think they don't know how to write
@@jacksimpson8529 tbh I may have preferred some women in the pirates instead of lost girls even if it would still be strange because of the implication Peter did kidna- I mean, took girls in Neverland in the past, but they all decided to grow up, hence Peter's decision to abandon them. Besides, there is already a good live action version of Peter Pan. It came out in 2003. It took some liberties, but was overall pretty true to the book. And Tinkerbell actually looked like Tinkerbell.

This is an excellent and pretty dense video. You’re absolutely right: “If they knew what they were doing, they wouldn’t need to use that an as excuse, they’d lead with the themes, they’d lead with the story.”
We already have a _good_ live-action _Peter Pan._ The 2003 movie with Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood. It more directly referenced the source material and dealt with the themes in a complex way. Not to mention that everyone in the main cast absolutely owned their roles.
Peter Pan can compete with grown angry pirates because he's an immortal who has been fighting for longer than anyone else has been alive. Wendy can do it because she has feminist rage.
No. The real reason Peter Pan can compete with grown angry pirates is that he is male. The same rage for combat runs in his veins as it does for the pirates. Asian cultures already understand this which is why shonen anime exists in Japan.
@@kaizokujimbei143 Ye but they are grown men. Pan is just a boy. This is all semantics tho, pick your battles. Both are reasons that make sense. Wendy swordfighting makes 0 sense.
not really? She can because she's literally in a fantasy world where you can fly with fairy powder, talk to mermaids and where kids fight against pirates on a daily basis. I love how when all the kids of the movie sword fight pirates everyone is ok, but when the only girl of the movie does it everyone starts screaming "FeMInIsM!!!1!!!!" lmao Also plenty of peter Pan movies have Wendy joining in in the sword fights against pirates, having her little fun with the other kids, and still keeping the core message of her deciding to not dwell on childplay forever and go back to her world, grow up and become an adult. The 2003 Peter Pan movie was pretty nice!
They aren't making movies for the audience that exists but for the one they are creating. And the acceptance of the product is used to measure the results of the programing!

If they are not claimed in seven days they are sent far away to the Neverland to defray expanses. I'm captain." “What fun it must be!" “Yes," said cunning Peter, "but we are rather lonely. You see we have no female companionship." “Are none of the others girls?" “Oh no; girls, you know, are much too clever to fall out of their prams.”
“Oh no; girls, you know, are much too clever to fall out of their prams.” Or far too cowardly. Females will never truly understand the male's romanticism for adventure and danger.
If you get the chance watch Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates, Tim Curry as Captain Hook. It was well done with both sides doing smart and dumb things. Wendy is very well portrayed, IMO, and is often annoyed by Peter as he is arrogant and reckless. They show the charm Peter has and how Wendy is the only one to be able to reign him in. It shows the potential for further adventures with Pan but sadly they have never reached this height again.
About changing the work of art. According to some myths Aleksander Dumas when question about “Three Musketeers” why the book named that way, because it obviously the FOUR musketeers, answered:”…maybe, but I don’t want to change anything even grammar errors”. Also as most recent example we can remember Miadzaki who sent katana to John Lasseter with word “no cutting”.
I've watched 3 versions of Peter Pan, the cartoon when I was a kid was 100% disney magic, and the one with Robin Williams, and Juliia Roberts as Tinkerbell is still my favorite to this day, the sheer expression of imagination in the "no food" feast scene is just pure perfection. Even the one with Hugh Jackman singing Smells like Teen Spirit has amazing scenes and kickass music. So do they really need to retell the tale just for diversity sake? Or do they have something to offer that all the other 3 movies made lovingly unforgettable to us?
It's a CORRUPT Disney cash grab with WOKE Virtue Signal race/gender swapping so they can blame the AUDIENCE for being some kind of -IST when nobody goes to see it! LOL

I think most people are scared to compete with the original Disney versions, and I believe you have to try to make it as different as possible because while the story is in public domain, the movies are Disney property. There are still many classic tales that deserves to be adapted, but it seems no animated studio is interested in classical fairy tails anymore.
Let hollywood, including Disney burn themselves down, chasing this modern audience that doesn't seem large to keep it afloat. I'm done. I was all of 4 yrs old, though, it made that much of an impression on me, I remember it to this day.
If Disney wanted a TRUE reimagining of their films, they'd change the films' setting. Like what if Snow White took place in a future where the Dwarves were cybernetic. Actually alter the setting instead of simply race swapping a cast and calling it reimagined. Romeo & Juliette starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes is a reimagining. It takes the setting from several hundred years ago and moves it into the 1990's.

That's why today it's a name given to the boys kicked out of FLDS Mormon polygamous groups in the US, as they are tossed from the community with nothing but what they can carry and limited support.

I think understanding the origins of this story and the historical context are indeed important
This is lost on modern film makers. None of them are educated enough to know any of this
Hook was the Peter pan film "for modern audiences" which did that sort of thing right.
Hook is my favorite Peter Pan movie.
it helped that they cast really good actors; Maggie Smith as Wendy, Robin Williams as Peter, Dustin Hoffman as Hook. plus as you say they didn't monkey with the source material but built on the existing story.
Nobody talking about the film Pan

The whole point of Wendy being so important to Peter and the boys is that ..they all missed mom. She was the only girl around since forever and they loved her as a sort of "mom" in a way. Having lost girls would defeat the purpose I think
Honestly, there was a whole tribe of native women...if they were going to remove this aspect of the story from Wendy all of those moms could have made the point that the lost boys needed moms and encouraged Wendy to accept her womanhood. But these hacks...
yet the faires and mermaids were women.. there were other females on the island.

But see now she is empowered! Shes a proper girlboss and not being forced to be the adult.

@mobbs6426 think she wasn't btchy enough was because she was older and became less jealous since Peter grew up. She wasn't a child like fairy anymore.

Race/gender swapping is the whole point of this movie, just as it was with Little Black Mermaid.
They have trans girls, trans boys now.
Hook 1991 was really an interesting movie. The storytelling along with it is intriguing.
I really love the scene. Especially the Lost boys (they're like a thousand of them)
The Ending scene was badass and rebelious. BANGARANG !
Pretty sure Peter will just decide not to be a racist man, and then transition into a woman.
"Hook" was more of a sequel. And it was crap.
Remember in "Hook" when the Lost Boys took on Hook's pirates with their brains and not strength alone!
I think I'll just purchase Hook on 4K and call it a day.

Can you imagine Peter Jackson trying to make LOTR now? I can't either.
No, don't drag the veteran director in these Wokies Hollywoke groupies. His TLOTR will probably be better if done today than back then, even, due to the latest tech.
“But where do you live mostly now?"
“With the lost boys."
“Who are they?"
“They are the children who fall out of their perambulators when the nurse is looking the other way. If they are not claimed in seven days they are sent far away to the Neverland to defray expanses. I'm captain."
“What fun it must be!"
“Yes," said cunning Peter, "but we are rather lonely. You see we have no female companionship."
“Are none of the others girls?"
“Oh no; girls, you know, are much too clever to fall out of their prams.”
“Oh no; girls, you know, are much too clever to fall out of their prams.”
Or far too cowardly. Females will never truly understand the male's romanticism for adventure and danger.
In retrospect, it kinda sounds like 'cunning Peter' is buttering Wendy up for second base...
LOL
@@veeclash4157 So just like everything else they've done over the last 5 years or so?
“All the Amazon’s are called Dave” had me fucking rolling
Musicians back in the day learned all there is to know about their craft, their kind of music, the thoughts other people had put into it and only then they changed it.
Disney has disabled comments from that trailer since this aired.
"They're creatively bankrupt." You hit the nail right on the head!
The more things that go into the public domain, the better, then we may be able to get quality movies made from classic characters again.
Didn't work out well with that Winnie the Pooh horror movie
I think most people are scared to compete with the original Disney versions, and I believe you have to try to make it as different as possible because while the story is in public domain, the movies are Disney property. There are still many classic tales that deserves to be adapted, but it seems no animated studio is interested in classical fairy tails anymore.
Let hollywood, including Disney burn themselves down, chasing this modern audience that doesn't seem large to keep it afloat. I'm done. I watch, you Disparu, because I enjoy your episodes and your wonderful insights. Peter pan? There was a TV show when i was a child.. I remember watching it - checked the date, 1955. I was all of 4 yrs old, though, it made that much of an impression on me, I remember it to this day.
The part where Tinkerbell said it's Dust'N time, as she lebron james'd that powder was EPIC!
When Tinkerbell attacked Captain Hook and said it was a mostly “peaceful protest”, it gave me shivers.
I showed the trailer to my 9yr old daughter the other night and she stood up & shouted “Disney ruin everything! I hate them!”
Proud doesn’t describe how I felt in that moment .. hail to the fellowship
- that just sounds hard to believe, unless she was just parroting you. Why would a 9yr old girl have enough of a connection and understanding of the past iterations of peter pan to declare that disney has ruined it? This is like when feminists say how proud they are of their little daughter saying smash the patriarchy.
And then everyone clapped.
Amazing! Even a 9 year old child can see the bullshit!! Congrats, sir. You did a great job with your daughter, I'm an adult blk male and I hate all this woke, diversity shit! Tinkerbell isn't black, the little mermaid isn't black and she doesn't wear a hair weave underwater! When I watched the live action version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast (the animated verison was a longtime classic), I knew Disney was a woke path. It's only going to get worse, prepare yourself, friend.
You don't need to invent stuff in order to criticize Disney, liar.
Our queen
Friendly reminder to never give Disney another dollar.
The last live action remake I liked… was 101 Dalmatians.
With the great Glenn Close as Cruella 😊
Oh yeah. Anything John Hughes was involved with is gonna be miles better.
Well... Disney always reimagined the original stories to fit his audience.
Problem is - unlike modern "reimaginators" he was a talented man with great artistic vision.
Interestingly they never change the image of the bad guy .
This is the best video you've done to date. Very important to the concept of integrity in writing, and the corporate poison that's invading a lot of modern film and tv. And an apparent generation of bad writers who only care about themselves.
It's too bad, because the original work by Barrie is actually really interesting.
The part where Peter Pan grabs Hook and says "I know it was you, Fredo...you broke my heart" was just so great.
Let me guess, an AI wrote the script? You know, to save money.
Wouldn’t doubt it
😂 probably not too far off, calculated formula that scores with acceptance and gets high streaming on Disney+, soon Disney will become super insulated, like a thunder dome for freaks, Walt would burn it down if he were alive
If they want to leave Disney's past alone, why do they keep remaking old films?
Last time I tried to leave something, I didn't drag it with me.
We already had two great live action Peter Pan movies.
Hook and Peter Pan (2003).
Funnily enough, this has got to be one of the first of these Disney remakes that I have seen 0 advertising for. And given that it’s not slated for a theatrical release only cements the point that Disney is in the gutter.
I love the scene when Tinkerbell self-identifies as the balrog. All the feelings!
Cried when Peter Pan tells Wendy, "You have not seen what I have seen"😭
I’ve been watching a lot of your content lately and this, by far, is one of your best videos. That conclusion was amazing. Keep up the good work.
Since these properties are public domain, someone make an actually good live action adaptation of it. Also the Brothers Grimm version some would be neat as well but unrelated.
