You illustrated my Childhood. I can't describe how much of an impact your work had on my formative years. Dinotopia are some of the most beautiful, imaginative and engrossing books I've ever read; even into adulthood. I can only hope Dinotopia is one day done justice by Hollywood. Thank you.
One little detail I love in this film is that small psittacine dinosaur descendant hopping about on your stuff and your shoulder. That's so cool. I guess it models sometimes and helps with action! You rock and your methods are fantastic. I've learned so much from your videos and blogs.
I can't get over the lengths you go to, to create your work. It's wonderful, I wish I had this much enthusiasm, I'd have to learn so many different skills! I'm just trying to master painting! Thanks for sharing your genius with us! 💙 💓
It's truly inspiring to witness your work progress. Dinosaurs are so facinating creatures, especially to paint and sculpt. Maybe it's because all the new facts that are discovered about them, e.g feathers.
I grew up poor, drawing and learning art from experience and through trial and error. As far as education, I've had public school art classes and that's about it. My mother taught me what she knew but it was still not any "professional" advice. As the years went by my skills were (and still are) being honed and I gradually get more able to express myself artistically. I always thought "gee, if I could just sculpt this image I have in mind first, I could get a better idea/feel for the form and lighting...but that's ridiculous! Why would I do that? I should be able to just draw/paint it like a real artist!" Little did I know, real artists whose work I've admired for years were doing just that! Amazing!
This is probably one of the most informative art videos I've seen on YT. Thank you for this, and for your books. I feel like I've improved in leaps and bounds since I started using techniques from them.
Thank you for your books. I read your books when I was 10years old at first time . Now I‘m 31 years old. I’m a chinese and I living in Shenzhen. Thank you for your books give me a childhood. I still keep your 4 main books in my studio.
Always great to watch the art process, and I especially love how those little theropods were peaking over his shoulders as he reconstructed their extinct relations 😊
@potsmokindino This is painted on 100% cotton rag heavyweight illustration board. I like the way this surface takes the pencil. Before painting in oil, I seal the pencil drawing and the surface with workable fixative and then acrylic matte medium.
Your books are my painting bible, your extra attention to detail is what makes you a genius, you are one of my favorite artist ever. Sir, you have my sword, bow and axe
@Ozimul The music is from the royalty-free section composer Kevin MacLeod's website. The pieces are called Ghost Dance, Ghostpocalypse, and Ghost Processional. Thanks, Kevin!
I got two of your books, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter and Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist. it is arriving in one week! i cant wait to have it in my hands!!
1:37 this is actually really accurate, since there were some healing bite marks on adult Edmotosaurus and Triceratops of T rex, suggesting it was an active hunter. There were also bite marks on large Sauropods, but this is likely due to scavenging.
Wow! That was awesome! Thanks for that glimpse into your studio. I love the attention you put into producing your videos too. I look forward to your new video releases. Thanks!
I love nothing more than to watch great artists who work in traditional mediums, creating beautiful pieces like this, however I just wished it were a longer film, such a talented guy who's work I've followed for some years now, his video is just over 5 mins and yet there are those (so called art) colouring book tutorials that gone on for almost 2 hours...no justice, the word's gone mad!!!! I really hope we get to see more of this brilliant artist at work, he's amazing.
i think is better to feel private when being creative. i prefer the books of him. each peace of art is a part of our heart we share with the world when release. but sure it is cool to be the bird on his shoulder....
Wow! This is truly amazing. I have wanted to do this since childhood (I'm now 26) and I am working on my first piece for the Nevada State Museum. This is very inspiring and insightful! I hope to master this amazing art as you have!
That was such a monumentally inspiring video. I really appreciate all the time you took to create this for us to see. I sculpted a terror bird a year or so ago. Now I am thinking of finishing the sculpt by painting it. Then photographing it like you did for reference. So wonderful.
Not only are you a skilled artists but also a crafts person, building an actual 3D model from wire is very hard, as I remember from having to make models of furniture that way a number of years ago.
You do fine work sir I love the classic look you have in your art. It looked so classic I thought that your painting on 1:39 was made during the days of Charles R Knight.
Don't be "jealous"; remember, art is like any kind of profession; it takes time, study, and lots and lots of hard work to get good. You'll suck at it when you start, everyone does; but if you stick with it, and give it the attention it deserves, you'll get better and better!! And you may even get paid very well for it some day, just like James does!
I like you work and how to made it, I learm so much watching your videos, about how to make a custom process for me, using everything around me and any technics that I know. thank for you divulge your work and be so generous.
I can look one day along on one picture of the dinotopia book. just for example you can read 8 hours on his website and in the internet about him. idea?
Whenever I read the word “talented” in comments my brain screams “skilled!” - the word you people look for is “skill”! Talent is potential. Skill is realized talent.
I can draw a dinosaur picture really well. But those paintings made my work look like a three year old did it. Still an excellent video, the best I've seen so far. 12/10 rating.
Hi Kevin. Great video. Your studio is great. What a lovely window... What kind of clay and paint do you use on your dinomodels? What kind of paint are you using for the final painting on paper? Keep up the great work!
Thank you for this demonstration of painting and the innovative method for creating convincing dinosaur reconstructions! I'm a budding artist who's interested in paleontology/animal art, so this clip is very instructive. Would you(or anyone else) be kind enough to tell me what sort of paint(like oils, acrilyc etc) did you use in this entire clip? Thank you in advance!
that is so talented and brilliant, why do some rappers smoking and holding some watches in the camera have millions of views and this here only 100k :( don't understand people
waving my hand, this time from germany! you are so super cool in so many ways! i hope i can put my part to help one day artist can be just creative, get much more respect for their creations out from 'nowhere'. and do not need to worry for income, food, place and time to work on their projects. 🦕🦖🐬🦈🦎🐊🐙 🐾
