What happened mid 70’s was the Lima Accord, the time when the Western World began exporting their labour to Asia. From this time it was possible to acquire product for less than 10 cents in the retail dollar without any bricks and mortar investment, meaning huge profitability for those with money and knowledge. Hence the sharp increase in incomes for all professional services. More money to pay for intellectual expertise. The reason why this did not immediately cause distress for the lower income groups was that they were suddenly able to buy an increasing number of goods at relatively low prices ie their standard of living increased despite stagnant wages.

So before 1913 you didn't really have strong unions and workers rights.
In the 70s Nixon made friends with China and well paying manufacturing jobs left the country.
Now with automation you have low skilled jobs and highly skilled jobs. The middle ground is increasingly shaky.
Income inequality will only get worse.

This video ended up playing from autoplay, but I'm glad I stuck around. I knew a lot of these things, but didn't know just how intense the numbers were statistically. It makes it so much more clear why it is so difficult to get ahead these days depending on location. I thought I was just having bad luck, but seeing my state in dark red affirmed my suspicion that my state just sucks with good paying career opportunities.

I have just started watching this and already in the first minute, the presenter contradicts herself. The pie chart shows the five levels of HOUSEHOLD income, but she says "you would divide the POPULATION in five". And single households with only one earner would by definition usually have less income than households where both partners are working.
And the elephant in the room with the chart at 44:00 is whether IQ (and thus education, income and wealth opportunities) is at least partly hereditary. In other words, the "educational potential" of the population at large could have been used up (similar to the situation of European Worker Parties who are not run by ex-workers but of university graduates). And as Confucius said "A piece of rotten wood cannot be carved, nor can a wall of dried dung be trowelled."

I found the presentation very interesting. Prof. Ramsey brought up how in 1970 there was very low immigration (5% foreign born), declining union membership, massive trade imbalances and the end of fixed exchange rates (off the gold standard) in 1971 with end of Bretton Woods, the role of technology in promoting winner take-all in some fields like music, and different parenting and study skill sets between lower and higher educated families. I would have liked to see the role of radical changes in payroll and marginal tax rates with the Reagan years, the legality of abortion in 1973 by Roe v Wade which reduced the population with about 29% of unborn being aborted leading to an aging, stagnating population, divergence of productivity gains going from workers to top1%, the high percent of college professors who are now low-paid associates and not high-paid tenured, and the role of out-of-wedlock births from 1960s to today. She did mention the instability of low-income families, but not where that instability comes from. Prof. Ramsey seemed to emphasize skills as the keyto inequality, but many college-educated workers are underemployed and the younger ones are in debt. I think more should be done to look at changes in taxes through bribery/lobbying and changes in sexual morality that have led to unstable families and high rates of abortion, as demographic growth is an important element of economic growth.

EFFORT is not distributed equally. Why should income be?
Only 12% of U.S. adults scored in the highest literacy proficiency levels, and only 9% scored in the highest numeracy levels.
While 52% of Americans score below the minimum literacy required for coping with the demands of everyday life and work in a complex, advanced society, and successful secondary school completion and college entry.
Gone are the days of a high school dropout getting a job at the car plant making $25.00 an hour tightening lugnuts.
People are not being left behind. They are falling behind. America is becoming an ever increasingly technologically driven society and people are failing to put forth the efforts to keep up.

Graph at 30:00 (she misses the point that the graph changes from extreme growth to extreme decline at the moment Nixon took us off the Gold standard and the value of the USD began to plummet beginning the stagflation / OPEC crises era, IE the beginning of the downfall of society in earnest in all realms of quantifiable measures.)

Left wing indoctrination camps (universities) here trying to focus on FEELINGS rather than focusing on fixing their liberal policies that keep poor people poor. I am a brown LEGAL immigrant who came here with just 300 dollars in my pocket.... I have a bachelor's from the country of origin but it only equates to high school in America.... I now make over 70,000 a year. Instead of hating rich I can learn from them and get there myself through smart and hard work like so many of other Americans with Indian heritage did and do. Quit feeling sorry for yourselves, quit romanticizing commie socialists, quit boozing, smoking pot, chasing tail, touristing, binge watching, binge eating and above all being sorry ass bitter SJWs .... just get out there work hard and u r bound to get richer ..... nowhere else in the world u have a better chance of doing that other than America. Don't fall for left wing propaganda and biased liberal studies to support their commie agenda. China got rich not because of communism or socialism they got rich off of our capitalism, consumerism and their hard work. Prageru videos r the other side of the story.... don't make up ur mind without hearing both sides of the story. The proof is in the pudding y r Indians asians doing so well .... leaps and bounds ahead of all other American groups? Because they don't sit their and FEEL this that and other about people doing better than them.... instead they keep their families intact and they just get after hard work PERIOD. Obama even said fatherlessness, teen pregnancy was huge part of the problem.

In Asia, kids were taught since young if they want to succeed in life, study hard. Parents do whatever they can to ensure their children get a solid education. Even for the lower income families, they bend over their backs for their children’s education. These facts basically support the wisdom of relentless focus on education.

Just looking at the numbers it looks like income inequality was worse when it dips down. 7.8 vs 1.9 is a much larger disparity than 18 vs 8.6. What does "income shares" mean? This video was somewhat irritating me. I actually had to stop watching it around the mid point, just because of what was being said. First off, just because you don't have a 4+ year degree, doesn't mean you are "less skilled", or "not as knowledgeable". At the end of the day, a degree just states that you went to school longer than someone else. A degree in no way, shape, or form dictates whether a person is smarter or has more skills than a person who lets say only graduated from high school.

Here's an example of how stupid it is to choose a person for a job simply because they have a degree, over a person who only graduated from high school. Lets say both individuals are applying for a job as a manager of a grocery store, or some kind of place that involves interacting with customers. If two people apply, one that is a high school graduate, and the other has a BA, graduating with studies in lets say Chicano studies, the person with the degree would get picked over the high school graduate, even though their degree and "skills" have absolutely nothing to do with the type of position they are applying for.

I know of many people who are more skilled and more intelligent than most people with degrees, myself included. What employers should do is evaluate each individual when they walk in. Maybe give them and test or trial run at the position, and see who works out best for the given job, and how well that person interacts with the other employees. You don't know how many people in managerial positions I have seen that don't know how to be a manager, and don't know how to interact with their employees. I am lucky enough to have a good job, because they chose me based off of testing, and how I interacted with others. I also know people who have degrees, however, they can't find a decent job in that field. You don't know how many people I know that went to school and got their degrees in teaching, and they literally now all work in daycares, because there aren't any better teaching positions that are available at the moment.

The reason there is a decline in wages and what not in this country isn't because of a lack of knowledge or skills, it's because the greedy top 10%, especially the top 1%, keep all of the profits for themselves, rather than distribute the wealth to give their current employees a higher wage, or simply higher more employees to help their business become more efficient/productive.

It's silly that you even need that little piece of paper now days, just to be even considered for a position. My sister went to college for 7 years, and has her PhD. She currently works for a very well known pharmaceutical company as the head of one of their departments, and makes well into the 6 figure range. She always tells me that the only reason I don't have a position like hers, is because I don't have a degree. When I was 15 (I am now a couple decades older than that), she insisted I take an IQ test with her, at the University she was attending. She was told she had an IQ score of 164 (at 22 years of age), and I was told I had an IQ score of 156 (at 15 years of age). I am and have been since that time, a member of Mensa. What does that mean? That means I have taken an approved intelligence test that was properly administered and supervised, and that I am "ranked" within the top 2% of all people in the world (Intelligence wise, essentially). Now, you'd think that would mean something, possibly even more than a degree that simply stated I went to college for 4+ years. However, people could care less. Even though a high IQ technically shows that I am highly intelligent and adaptable, that little piece of paper that shows someone went to school a little longer, still means more to most people/companies.

It's funny how people say certain workers are "less skilled" and that's why they make less. Those "less skilled" workers are actually the work horses of the company, and the ones that keep the productivity going. Without those workers, companies would produce a far lower profit, if they even remained open. Could you imagine going to a grocery store that only has 3 or 4 employees? The shelves would always be empty, there would be one person working a register (which means ridiculously long lines), and the stores couldn't remain open from 6AM to midnight. If stores could only be open for 8hrs a day, you'd see profits going down, therefore, those people with degrees working the "more skilled" positions, would have to take a pay cut, thus making the argument that having a degree would make you a lot more money, invalid. It's simply how in todays society, people have become more I guess you could say shallow, just judging a book by its cover, rather than the contents within.

Don't get me wrong. The need for a degree is still important for positions that require you to actually learn specific things and be knowledgeable within a very specific field, such as human anatomy (physicians, surgeons, and specialists.). However, for the majority of the jobs this world has to offer, a degree is really not needed. Just think about how many times you have been somewhere that you know for a fact the person in charge needed a degree to attain that position, and that person seemed like they truly did not belong in that position (they didn't know how to do their job). Spending 15-30k a year for college to get a job that'll make you around $20 an hour on average seems pretty silly to me. That's just my opinion.
