I read an awesome theory on how Kratos actually defeated Heimdal. In short, the spear is the first weapon he trained with and mastered as a Spartan, so he didn’t have to think about his movements or gameplan, his actions were just natural which meant he could clear his mind. This prevented Heimdal from being able to predict his movements which is also verifiable when he said “what is going on in that empty head of yours?” Heimdal also couldn’t predict the spears explosions and after his ego shattered, he stopped searching Kratos’ mind and tried to brawl with him (became sloppy). After he got Kratos angry by threatening Atreus, Kratos reminds himself of his past while choking Heimdal with Mimir telling him “this isn’t who you want to be.” In that moment, Kratos was likely flooding his head with memories of his past which Heimdal finally would have seen. That’s when Heimdal truly saw Kratos and called him a monster with his last breath.
Just a theory, but very fitting I believe!

If you watch Kratos swing at him it's the exact same way every time, so he never expected when he blocked for Kratos to grab him and move to a totally different fighting style.

The Herald of Ragnarok title was given to Heimdallr because he wielded gjallarhorn. The horn Kratos picked up. It is said that when Ragnarok starts gjallarhorn will be sound. Odin gave it to Heimdallr since Heimdallr was the watcher of Asgard.
There are such things called Heralds of War or battle. Both are just in reference to something summoning the call to rise up.

Bifrost is a type of energy certain enemies use. It basically does extra damage. Kratos can also find equipment to use bifrost against enemies. Yngvi is the nickname Freya alone calls her brother. Im guess it's a sibling thing cuz he has one for her. Queen mistletoe was a insult and him mocking her sons death cuz that's what broke his immortal curse. Extreme attention to detail. If you notice the first hit Kratos gets on Heimdall is with the ring, which makes that gash across his eye. You can tell that kill hit hard for Kratos because this is the first time someone he killed called him a monster but he was actually trying to change his ways. He's conflicted because he thought he changed but the love for his son caused the old nature to come out.

  • @BrandonWestfall

    Finally.
I am sure someone else will mention it but when Kratos grabs Gjallarhorn off Heimdall's corpse and misses it...that was unintentional.

I remember liking this fight a lot lore-wise when someone explained how Kratos beat Heimdall.
So remember when Odin said that Heimdall could read minds, which is how he avoids hits.
Well some people have theorized that because Kratos has been fighting for so long, that his attacks are just second nature and he doesn’t require thinking about his next attacks.
The spear did give the element of surprise, but Kratos was adapting to the fight as it went on and Heimdall couldn’t keep up without relying on his powers.

    So Dig This
The reason Kratos is so calm now
Is that when he left after the terrible and tragic events in Greece.
He swore an oath to himself that he would never again let his anger take control of him.
It just simply costs to much pain and destruction.
Once he arrived at his new home in Midgard
And met his new wife and had a child
He would leave for long periods of time and look for fights but he would not fight back he would take the beatings as a way of learning to control his anger.
He would even fight the largest bears 4 at a time but he would never hurt of kill them.
The old Kratos would’ve let loose the second Baldur put hands on him.
Just imagine the chaos old Kratos would’ve created.

To be fair Kratos gave Heimdall two chances to walk away from the fight but the Aesir are either too proud or stubborn to walk away from a fight. It’s like what the Norns said, “we are the sum of our choices” so his death being preordained is more on heimdalls stubbornness to blame for his death rather than kratos wanting to end the Aesir.

Another great interpreation by the creators of this game. Heimdall was one of the more powerful of the Aesir gods, but he had to be- he was the one responsible for guarding the bridge that connected Midgard to Asgard (called The Bifrost Bridge); but just how the writers of this game took Baldur's invulnerability and twisted into something opposite of the original myths (where Baldur was a god of light and beauty, know for his gentle nature), Heimdall's vigilance was turned into something . . . unpleasant. :)
Also, did you notice how Heimdall (really, any Aesir god who interacts with her) refers to Freya as "Frigg"? In the "traditional" myths, Freya and Frigg are 2 different goddesses. Frigg is Odin's wife (essentially, the Norse version of Hera), while Freya leads the Vanir gods along with Frey/ Freyr. Another inspired move by this game's writers to make them one goddess (albeit it a very CONFLICTED goddess).

Throughout my entire gameplay of God of War 2018 and Ragnarök I noticed that all Kratos kills are far more tamed than what his kills used to be part form the fact that he's over a thousand years old, but the times you get to see that classic Kratos Brutality is when him, Atreus or Freya are fighting an Ogre, a Troll, or a Wolver, like here at 5:53 for example you see that classic gorey Kratos Brutality.
10:00-12:42 DING DING DING DING GAME TIME! Kratos vs Gulltoppr, Victor: Kratos
12:42- 15:00 Kratos vs Heimdall Round 1, Victor: Kratos
My thoughts: The first round is trying to hit heimdall and the spear exploding and creates an opening but is still weaving the attacks at 13:03, but when i finally got a hit on heimdall at 13:29 it was finally game-time. But he really pissed me off to a certain degree. The only reason i did not second try this fight this was because of Mimir at 14:23. "C'mon, brother. You hit him once-just gotta find the right opening!
Heimdall: You think you get to just walk away? No, that is not how this works. You are dead, sunshine!
16:30-18:18 Kratos vs Heimdall Round 2 Victor: Kratos
My Thoughts: The second phase of this fight took an interesting turn, guys like heimdall, who are so calm, cool to just being crazy after getting they ass whooped and being disrespected, was the last straw, plus there's some dialouge that cut out in this because when Heimdall said that i was like "Ok see that's where ya messd up you don't threaten a childs life in front of a parent." Heimdall: I am going to find that little mongrel of yours and beat his face into a pulp!
My reaction at 17:47. MINK, MINK, SIT DOWN! YEAH, YEAH! Mimir: This isn't who You want TO BE! Me: I'm sorry but he's not really giving me a choice right now. Mimir: I don't know if we're breaking fate or fate's breaking us. Me: It's a little bit of both mimir.
    Another classic Kratos Brutality, 21:21
Here at 22:00 -23:13, and it was such a rush of excitement cause with was just being a damn tank at this point, and it was awesome. 24:52: Freyr: Relax. Me: Of course, the boat flies. Atreus: I... I knew it could do that. Me: Hmmph, no you didn't. And after i was done with this "MAIN QUEST" i immediately went after Birgir to see if he was dead or not i know that no one's surviving a fall like that but going after him open up more spots for Vanaheim.

Odin mentioned that Heimdall forgets to think through the consequences of his actions, and here we see that it's his downfall. He demonstrably forgets to think, throughout the entire battle.
He doesn't think through the consequences of catching the spear. He just does, because he wants to mock Kratos... Then it explodes in his face.
He does learn this time, and doesn't catch it anymore. He just knocks it away with his sword. He doesn't think through the consequences, such as where the spear landed... and then it blows up at his feet.
He learns again, and now parries, then dodges out of the way of where it lands. He doesn't think through the consequences, like how those spears stay there... until he dodges right over one he parried earlier.

what else could have been done i mean he kept taunting and threatening and provoking. such understanding is there for kratos. but when they tortured me relentlessly , until i broke and did the terrible things i never imagined i could do, how long and hard i loved through all the abuse, until i became the abuse. why cant any one understand that for me? i did what i did because i was cornered and traumatized and broken. no one sees that, no one ever sees that. broken mind, broken body, broken. love is the most important thing in life. no one understands this. may all our thoughts come from a space of love. im tired of being the only one to care this much. the pain that i carry is the love that i withhold. transform it all into love for everyone. thats what i do. but its not working. all i get is abuse and judgement , insult and disrespect, hate.

Heimdall can see the truth in the eyes of people. He accurately called out Atreus when he first went to Asgard. He spent the entire fight angering Kratos. In his final moments he didn't see Kratos. He saw the Ghost of Sparta. The monster.

Also another interesting fact you might not know is that in Greek mythology there actually is a God know as Kratos and he is the God of and the Living personification of strength itself hence why kratos basically has infinite strength in his prime

Feel like the main criticism with this scene is he's suppose to be losing control but we seen what losing control is in God of War 1-3. I mean this is a guy that beat his father so hard he was blinded by the amount of blood covering his face. They really should have went further with this.

I recommend you watch Heimdall, the imperfect tool character, explained to fully understand his character and role in the story rather than just being an Arsehole. Of course after you finish the game

No. Them Fullfilling the prophecy doesn't mean that what has been foretold will happen, as Kratos said. We chose to be better.

“He should’ve let Freya kill heimdall to prevent the prophecy” sorry to break it to you but Freya literally couldn’t beat heimdall. That’s why she kept nagging kratos to kill heimdall after hearing the prophecy because she thought heimdall couldn’t be beat so when she heard kratos was destined to kill him she kept begging to go through with it. There’s a reason heimdall is not afraid of anyone besides Odin and that was because Odin was the only god who knew how to get around his foresight ability.

monster, i know what it feels like to be a monster. everyone loves kratos, yet he has slaughtered countless children animals and women and loving peaceful good hearted men. do you all understand this? people are so confusing. in my deeply traumatized and demented past, i did something cruel and monstrous, then when i realized what i did, i became terrified, at my self, in a panic i attempted to bring my victim back to life, i was successful. i fought to save the life i almost took. the abuse and trauma people have given me as i try so hard to be good and loving had twisted me into a psychotic monster. i was driven mad. people abused me and traumatized me like i deserved it, judged me like i was some kind of animal or monster, when all i care about is love, until they broke me, and i became the monster they wanted to see. people told me i am absolutely terrifying. i absolutely terrified my self too. why do people love kratos, he has done so much worse than my worst. why do people abuse me when all i ever did was love everyone so much. none of you have ever made any sense . i dont understand any of you. you love this monster, but i was a golden hearted angel of compassion care and love and respect, and all ive ever known is loss. all my abusers were nice friendly smiling normal seeming people like all of you. how can i trust. i feel like prey in a world of only predators. hurt people, hurt people. so loving everyone is the most important thing in my life. yet, everyone i have ever met or encountered is an abusive monster waiting to hurt me. and if keep loving you people in the face of your mistreatment, youll keep terrorizing me and mess with my head and heart until i break, and lash out giving you a real actual reason to feel justified abusing me like i deserve it. then i am punished and ruined for it. judged for it. it is truly maddening. i dont need to know any of you, to know theres something wrong with all of you, youre all dangerous toxic cruel abusive monsters wating to happen. all it takes is a little rub the wrong way, a little misunderstanding. you think theres something wrong with me of course, i know how i sound to all of you. its because none of you will ever face the realities i have. all the darkness traumatized into me, it doesnt belong here with me. look at what people have turned me into. people want this instead of the love and light i want for everyone. kratos, is loved, by all of us. youre all so confusing i dont understand you crazy people. ive been thinking, maybe to change my life and be loved, i have to change, stop being so loving and kind and respectful, stop wanting friends or family or love all together, is that the way to have it? being loving and sweet has never done anything but allow people to traumatize me. maybe the problem is that i want to be loved .

Fun fact : people associated heimdall to Hermes ( in mithology heimdall and Hermes aren't "evil" ) the reason Is because in gow 3 hermes Is an arrogant and conceited and he Always Say that he's the Faster in the universe, heimdall too he's arrogant, conceited, he's even fast too but not like Hermes, and he's violent, i mean yeah he's literally a norse version of Hermes ( i talking about the games not myth) and Kratos "robbed" his horn as he robbed Hermes boots

If Freya had stayed to fight Heimdall instead of Kratos, she would've lost. Kratos was the only one prepared to fight him, and also, prophecy. Kratos was always gonna kill Heimdall, after all, the game IS called God of War: Ragnarok. And Kratos has never celebrated any death, not while we played as him, anyway.
And it's not that Heimdall had a misconception of his fate, he had a massive ego. He spent his lifetime believing that he was untouchable, only to suddenly get completely wrecked by some brute from a foreign land, and his ego couldn't handle that.
Also, Baldur didn't really "want to die", he just wanted to feel something, anything.
