Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been looking for this all over the internet, including iTunes. My grandma has a record of this, but the needle on her player is broken.
I grew up in a house where there was music all the time and my dad loved Burl Ives. I do too, now! Watching a cinema classic the other day the couple in the plot where sitting on a beach with a cute cute little girl singing just the peas, rice, and coconut part. I kept thinking there was more to it, and decided to look it up. The only version I knew was Burl's...imagine Counts Bassie! Listened it to by both---Burl wins hands doen!
I have a recording of this song on a 10 inch LP by a Bahamian singer Blind Blake. It is probably from the 50's but I'm not sure. The label is 'Art Records of Miami Florida.' The liner notes say that this song is 'sometimes referred to as the "Bahmian National Anthem" '... and ... 'originated here during the first World War when the scarcity of imported cooking oils forced the substituion of local coconut oil as a culinary medium -- much to the disgust of its users. '
It may be a whitewashed folk cover, but the Anita Kerr Singers are slaying those background vocals ❤️ “she’s an alcoholic mother” “like a little puppy” with the chorus, then “she blushes like a schoolgirl” “dumb like a fox, ma!” and a joint final chorus
@august2055 Check Amazon for Burl Ives - A Little Bitty Tear. It's a boxset put out by Bear Family Records that has all of his recordings from the Nashville Years (1961 - 1965) and includes both songs you mentioned.
I've listened carefully for years and still cannot figure out what the background singers are singing 'dumb like a......' possum is a good guess but the word has the accent on the final syllable.....and sounds like dumb like a fox hound?
When I hear his voice, I hear Christmas! I grew up seeing him as Frosty the Snowman♥️
brings back great memories of my mom and dad listening to Burl on the stereo.
Ohhhh! Ives never heard anything so sublime!
