Great reaction! You should just do the whole album, it’s a rare classic, every song is amazing. Bowie adopted The Thin White Duke as his persona for this era, but soon after, he quit characters and just focused on being a musical genius 😄

One of his greatest albums of the ‘70’s. From what I understand he had spent the summer of ‘75 filming The Man Who Fell to Earth in New Mexico and when he returned to Los Angeles, where he was based at the time, in early September, discovered his management had booked a world tour for him beginning in January ‘76. Not having an album to tour on he quickly gathered his backing musicians and with only a few ideas for songs wrote and recorded it in a two week period, which is why it’s only 5 original songs and 1 cover. At the time he was at the height of his cocaine addiction and in cocaine psychosis. He’s go days, even over a week without sleep. The persona he created; The Thin White Duke was his last character and his most extreme. He was in a way still playing his alien character from TMWFTE, but even more detached and alienated. You can identify The Thin White Duke by his slicked back red and blond hair, the white shirt with black waistcoat and trousers. But it was unsustainable; the coke, the character. By the end of the tour he relocated to Europe eventually crashing in Berlin with his friend Iggy Pop for company. There they collaborated on Iggy’s album The Idiot, which is a must listen, before bringing Brian Eno on board and recording Low, his comedown album and as different from StationtoStation as one could get. Another must listen.

@@retropian brilliant comment, I enjoyed reading that. Such a complicated artist by the sounds of it. I know a little about his stay in Berlin as my wife has always gone on about wanting to go visit the bicycle shop when he stayed above it with Iggy Pop to get clean. I clearly need to do some more homework on this chaps personnas given there are so many iterations and reasons for each one! Thanks again

This is my favorite Bowie album. This song is the longest song he ever did. The funny thing is he was so f×$%'d up on drigs, he claims he had no memories making the it. As for vocals, someone mentioned Pray on a Wing, its stunning. The Thin White Duke persona came after the "plastic soul" of Young Americans. This album is the bridge to the important "Berlin" trilology, which includes Heroes. You can go down a deep rabbit hole with this man. He does so many styles, you can get lost on him for months. My favorite Bowie song is on my second favorite Bowie album, the title track "Aladin Sane" - a lad in sane, get it? He was truly one of a kind. Glad you liked this one, much more to discover. Your wife has good taste, maybe she should join you one day in a clip. US Roadie 1 signing off!

Played this at his Concert live in Sydney showing my age here! I was awestruck. To make an impression Bowie developed the stark approach of the 1976 staging. The ceiling of fluorescent tubes which had formed part of the Station to Station tour's lighting rig was expanded to create enormous panels of stripped light, hanging like prison bars at the back and on the ceiling of the stage - of which would pulsate in time to the music... The memories are flooding back! oh yes I was in the mosh pit too lol.

His reference to The Thin White Duke gives a clue to his persona then. He killed off Ziggy in 1973 and changed that look mid 1974 I think. This is a superb track from the album of the same name. A sort of electronic funk rock. He changed direction music wise with the previous album Young Americans, which was a mix of soul and rock. The cover pic to the Station To Station album is from a scene in the movie The Man Who Fell To Earth, where he played the part of an alien from another planet. Appropriate lol And your wife has taste being a big Bowie fan.

Well... Do I like David Bowie? I created a playlist for him. There are very different styles. Usually I preferer late 1960s ("Space Oddity" album), early 1970s ("Aladdin Sane" album, my favorite) or 1980s ("Tonight"), but "Station to Staion" is very interesting too. And the live album "Stage" is really great. Well, "Earthling" is also great, in a very different way. There are a lot of interesting Bowie songs, in very different music genres.
Why all the best singers and bands are from UK? Bowie, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis, Caravan, Yes, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Greenslade, Colosseum, Atomic Rooster, Cream, The Hollies, Small Faces, The Move, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, The Nice...
Ps. About Bowie vocals, do you know "Wild is the Wind"? There is a studio version, great, and there is the video version, recorded live in studio, great too. I prefers "slightly" the music video version.

@@MusicForTheSoulReactions Well, there are great band form other countries too. I could suggest some great bands and singers from Brazil, USA, Nederlands, Italy, Germany... But, in my personal listening, UK have the most of the great bands, the most artists which I like are from UK. Well, I don't writed about my favorite female singer, Lulu, whcih is from Scotland, and I don't writed about NewWave and PostPunk artists, the best are from UK too, in my opinion.
For some counterpoint, I suggest my favorite artists from other countries:
Brazil - Quaterna Requiem (the best brazilian ProgRock band, in my opinion - usually instumental)
USA - Sparks (as Bowie, the syles varies: Synth Pop, Art Rock, Experimental, Electronic, Techno Pop, New Wave, Post Punk, Hard Rock, Pop-Rock... - there are great albums in 1970s and 2000s, although I think that usually "very weird" for a first listening)
Italy - Premiata Forneria Marconi "PFM" (the best Italian ProgRock ever - early almost as a "Italian Genesis")
Nederlands - Focus (great Prog band - usually instrumental, sometimes with weird and great vocals)
