I like these because it's like eavesdropping on the two of them chatting at the post-presentations mingler at a Curators Conference.
I am glad that Battleship Texas is running these videos. It allows those of us who love her to see what is going on during the restoration. I can't wait until it is done. I am quite sure TEXAS will be beautiful
If it had said USS New Jersey, would Ryan been thinking, "How can I get this home?"
As someone who had the conn of an Iowa class battleship, these videos are a real trip down memory lane, Thanks
Uncle Charlie worked at the Naval Gun Factory (Now called the Navy Yard) and he made 5 inch guns. The barrel was spun and the machinist road in a 'sulky' with the cutting bit which travelled along the barrel if I recall what he told me correctly. He was also at Pearl during the attack, which is another story.
I can thank you guys enough for what you do working together to learn best practices to preserve these historic ships. I hope all the museum ships work with you. Best I can tell they won't be making anymore of these. They must be preserved!
Thanks Ryan for finally getting some content out of the Battleship Texas channel!
The New Jersey was a welded hull the hull I think heard was 14" thick. I am a pipefitter and I was wondering how they welded 14" plate? When we weld pipe together we typically bevel the end of the pipe and start with root weld which if you look inside the pipe you should see a root weld seam joining the 2 pieces then a layer or multiple welds to fill in the rest of the bevel. How did they do battleship armor?
New Jersey was actually partially welded and partially riveted, she's at a nice spot where welding is happening, but not fully trusted yet. The vast majority of the armor plate on board is welded.
This is very interesting. You guys make all the work done on Texas look
easy, but we all know better. Thanks for making these videos.
Big thanks to those putting in the work to keep BB-35 alive for future generations to experience.
Great teck talk, guys! More please.
love these Texas updates!
Ryan, I’m impressed how swiftly you can grow a proper beard. True man.👍🏻
Would've been funny to see Ryan's reaction if one said USS New Jersey.
love these videos!!
Envy their jobs ❤
Howdy from San Antonio home of the Alamo
Okay I'll keep watching the videos love them.
🎉🎉CORROSION🎉🎉
Curious question, if say someone donated the required capital, would you be willing to trade that mount for one that’s currently on the Missouri?
Or is it more important to leave things where they are?
I need a quad mount Bofors to keep critters out of my garden.
Thank you very much
Id live to have a "gun garden" like that
Could either of these ships be brought back into service in case of a robot apocalypse, or zombies, or zombie robots?
What ever happened to the 5" guns taken off in the first refit.
Some of them ended up on Wake Island, helping in the defense there. A Japanese destroyer was sunk and several other ships damaged by 5” fire from the island.
Nice
Ryan, love the big beard, beards are tight.
BUT, you gotta move that mic down a button. Us bearded men must be aware that the beard tickling the mic is like the sound of a thousand nails on a thousand chalkboards.
Who removed the breech blocks? Are they still around?
Join us next week for more information on that!
The beard is looking great ryan
Why is there a trailer truck lying on its side in the background…?
We got hit by a tornado a few weeks before the NJ crew visit.
@@BattleshipTexas You could say you test fired one of the restored guns into the side of the trailer, but then the trailer would not be lying on its side. 🤣
Can you make a video about if the Blücher really was the best choice to lead up the Oslo Fjord in Operation Weserübung , or whether Lützow would not be more suiteable for the task to pass the Drobak Narrows first , due to her heavier guns and outlay as a Panzerschiff ?
And I have one of those nuts that held the 5in gun
It would be SO COOL to see these two share a birth…
What is STS?
Special Treatment Steel -light armor
Could a iowa call take on the montana call if the montana class was ever built
The Alabama i think is a montana class well they both have 16in so depends on ..the lucky hit
🤘😎🤘🇬🇧
The USS Texas is my sister
From the photo I thought this video was about Bofors 40 mm Swedish guns thus the bad jokes below posted before watching ….
I think the 5” 51 cal. was a really fine gun, sadly not dual purpose so relegated.
Maybe the corrosion on one side worse than the other is because of the person restoring and painting it. I as a left hand person would do a much better job on the left side than a right handed person. Maybe they didn't clean all the rust.
The civilian version shoots meatballs !
Made me a bit sick seeing the condition of the bore in that gun. One would think the bore could receive at least the care given the outside.....
Thats why the guns are there, they are getting work done. They will be beautiful soon.
The guns have been immobile for a very long time. There was no way to train them (turn left/right) to bring them in for maintenance. That's what they were talking about saying someone would have to go out on the barrel wearing a safety harness. There are lots of replacement parts being made and the guns are being stripped down to all of their component parts for cleaning, refinishing and a full restoration.
Corrosion!
40mm junkyard??
Probably the guns which were removed from the Texas
I'd love to buy one or tow of those....take them out to a isolated property.
Best thing to come from Sweden till IKEA?
Ryan. You should push that guy down and take a bunch of that stuff back to Jersey.
Is a naval gun like that legally currently considered a firearm?
Lingonberry juice was hard to get during the war to lubricate the mechanism….
