Awesome video and the shovel is a mechanical work of art. My family owns the machine shop that made the replacement parts for muskee and many other drag lines around the world it’s awesome to see just the gears that went into this machine
Some asinine land reclamation law said that ALL mining equipment had to be removed. Nobody in Congress thought about the legacy and heritage value of Big Muskie so, an irreplaceable symbol of American industrial might was chopped up and sold for scrap. Both the U.S. and U.K. are terrible about saving our respective feats of engineering and art for future generations.
What an amazing machine. Too bad it was scrapped. As crazy as this sounds, It should have gone into a museum, or been made into one. God bless and Jesus saves.
Actually Draglines can only walk backward. The centerline if the propel is about 15 feet behind the centerli e of rotation which is the cenrer pin. The propel takes about 80 % of the machine weight when it lifts. The rest of the weight is on the trailing edge of the tub duri g the step.
That's an i teresti g thought. It would have been the only Dragline that could have done it. It might have needed a different slide cylinder or a double acting one, it is an interesti g thought.
Every draglite walk forwards or backwards if they don't because of the weight thing you pick up the shoes you swing the machine and you walk towards your own counter wait

This video is when it was in Ohio County Kentucky. I have pictures of the Big beast it was amazing. It did come in on rail and was built on site.
this video is Cumberland OH
@trackhoe23 i think it could go forward the reason it had to back up was because it had dug down in front of it

Actually big Muskie Lifts itself all the way off the ground and the moves back and the sits
It’s the only one that did that
Great video.Like seeing the electric diesel.I wonder what Marion stripping shovel that is.
make that walk make that talk
As the nephew of a Bucyrus-Erie employee, it makes me particularly sad that this magnificent machine is no more.
@sneezabonk Actually, walking draglines are only alble to walk backwards.
Too bad the videographer didn't have a tripod for his camera.
These days a few haul trucks and big excavators can do just as much and much more efficiently no problem.
Cool! Always wanted to see Big Muskie take a step. Anyone know if it could walk forwards, too? Seems like with that hydraulic walking system it could.
