      It's not their fault. In the USA cargo trains take priority, so the Amtrak's get many delays they can't do anything about. Sadly, nobody has the appetite to build passenger only rails.
      You don't take the train for speed, you take it for the experience.

    • @originalph00tbag
      @originalph00tbag 7 months ago

      @ellisz5972 It's more that legislators don't have the appetite to force freight to keep their trains short enough to wait on sideage rails. It's not that freight has priority-quite the opposite, in fact-it's that passenger rail's priority is impossible to enforce if freight is allowed to be too long to get out of the way on any sideage rail in the country.

    From what I've heard, the reason Amtrak is always late is because the rail roads are owned by freight companies, and cargo trains get priority over passenger trains.

    • @counterfit5
      @counterfit5 9 months ago +881

      Amtrak is supposed to have priority as long as they're within a certain range of their schedule. However this is easy for freight railroads to screw with by running trains too long for their own sidings, and the penalties for this are poorly enforced.

    • @Dr_chronixb
      @Dr_chronixb 9 months ago +171

      @counterfit5 yea your exactly right, im pretty sure there is a law or something that make amtrak have priority over these freight trains but because they dont own the tracks and because nobody has any reason to report that a freight train took priority over a amtrak train (mostly because no one ever takes amtrak) it wont ever be fixed, unless the US nationalizes its rail but sadly that would/wont ever happen. Especially with politics on both sides only caring about them selves and not about the actual american people

    • @venerable_nelson
      @venerable_nelson 9 months ago +322

      Amtrak's site has a page and RUclips video about their delays. They are delayed by freight. Amtrak only owns a few railroads in the northeast, and the rest are owned by freight. The freight companies have to allow Amtrak to use their railroads and give passenger trains priority. But the freight companies move their trains first, not giving passenger trains priority.
      Amtrak wants us to call Congress about this.

    My understanding is that one of the biggest issues with rail in the US is that most of the track isn't dedicated for passenger rail. It's owned by the freight companies and they give their own trains priority, so you have to wait for freight rail to pass first, and since freight rail tends to go slower the tracks aren't as well maintained so the passenger rail can't go as fast on it either.

      Tbh the trains go pretty quick on many stretches of the Amtrak network. I rode the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco a few weeks ago and I was surprised that we were almost hitting 100mph for large majority of the trip. The problem is when the freights occupy the track and the passenger trains need to wait for it to clear that section of track.

    • @bobalooloo02
      @bobalooloo02 5 months ago +2

      Amtrak doesn't own any track, so they're second fiddle to freight companies they lease it from

    • @user-mb4vm3tf9v
      @user-mb4vm3tf9v 5 months ago +21

      The lease agreement with the RR says AMTRAK should get priority whenever possible - but since AMTRAK is run by political appointees some of whom have never set foot on a moving train, and couldn't care less - the RR's never have to live up to that agreement.
      Compare it to Brightline in Fla - where they actually want to make riding a train a good experience.

There was one gentleman whom I saw several times who would sit with me and chat since we had family in the same area.
      I also have chronic pain(fused t4-l3 and have Ehlers-Danlos) and completely agree. Trains are more comfy than cars and planes. Although, I was on better rx opioids at the time so that certainly helped. I don't travel much these days.

      I think I've only gone twice and it's not really worse than riding in a car, mostly... although cars are slightly more convenient, especially with how much of a picky eater I am and stuff. However, if we had GOOD public transit everywhere, and I didn't have like 1 passenger train in my state, I probably wouldn't mind switching. Like, oh wow, I have to walk for 10 minutes between my station and restaurant destination or something? It'd be fine. And technically, it might be cheaper than like 50 tanks of gas a year or whatever lol. But right now, it's not convenient enough and a slightly worse experience for me. (Someone less picky probably would have an equal or possibly better experience between train and car)

    I took an Amtrak in 2018 from St. Louis to Albuquerque. My family despised it, but I have the most wholesome memories! I woke at 5am in Dodge City to some old guys talking. I was pissed, but my dad made friends with them. Two elderly twins take the train from east to west every year for the joy of it. They get a hotel for a night, and take the train home the next morning. It’s all about the journey! There was an observation car almost entirely windows. The conductor announced when we would be traveling through remote nature preserves and parks that you truly couldn’t see from a car or airplane. On the train home, somewhere in Colorado, I had the most incredible experience. The conductor announced that we would be passing through a place filled with endangered elk. Everyone, from all walks of life, started counting aloud. The excitement was electric, and everyone felt connected in a special way. There were quite a lot of Amish folks aboard, and it was neat to see everyone come together in a way that otherwise would have felt awkward conversationally.

      Wish it was possible but US rail is not only heavily limited by governments, but also the private rail companies dominating the country. I think one major reason why train travel in the US sucks is that freight is always given priority because the infrastructure is not government owned. In Europe passenger rail gets the priority almost always. Freight companies can just tell passenger trains to stop whenever they want and those unexpected delays mess up everything.

    • @AeronauticalEnthusiast
      @AeronauticalEnthusiast 10 months ago +155

      Amtrak, by law, is actually given priority. However, because of how long our freight trains are, they can't fit into the siding so the Amtrak train has to wait in the siding instead.

      If we had bullet trains the same as China, Japan, or even TGV France, anything but the longest trips (NYC-LA) would become faster and cheaper with trains.
      No long security lines, no weather delays, no checking your bags an hour before the flight, no waiting for an hour for them to come off the baggage carousel. Not to mention cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
      It could be beautiful.

    The worst part about all of this to me is that most of this wasn’t directly Amtrak’s fault. They’ve been having a streak of bad luck lately and it’s only getting worse.
    Sure you could kind of blame them for the first fire, but everything else was out of their control. Most delays I’ve seen are caused by other companies’ freight trains. As for equipment failures, their older trains are dropping like flies left and right, and the new trains they’ve ordered are either still in production or unreliable beyond belief, which is on the manufacturer more than anything.

    • @GP30_Foamer
      @GP30_Foamer 10 months ago +5

      I’ll concede that saying almost all of it wasn’t their fault was a stretch, and I did say that the first fire was kind of their fault (likely poor maintenance coupled to the fact that their old equipment is becoming unreliable while it’s taking forever for the new stuff to arrive), and you should blame them for the hair in the burger too (I honestly forgot about that part, so that’s an oopsie daisy on my part). The second fire was because of somebody (most likely a passenger) not taking the tin foil off of their meal in the microwave, so that wasn’t directly Amtrak’s fault.

      Amtrak is often the cause of their own delays. This video showed multiple examples of that. Freight railroads cannot hold their trains forever waiting for Amtrak to show up whenever it feels like.

      Nobody enforces it, probably because the freight RRs are making money, so can pay bribes to congress. AMTRAK is losing money, even at the outrageous fares they charge, due to being effectively run by those same government officials.

    I'm a train enthusiast from Indonesia and I love Amtrak! I have travelled from New York to LA, from Seattle to Texas and New Orleans, with Chicago as the main hub for most trains. All on coach class haha as the sleeping rooms are too expensive for me. The downside for me are only the delays and the not so comfortable seats, but the views are so worth it which we will never experience on the plane. Best scenic train is definitely the California Zephyr, and the crews are awesome too. I have also tried long distance trains in other countries (Trans Siberia, Tren Patagonia, DB, Shinkansen, etc) but Amtrak is special because of the scenery.

    As someone who grew up in NYC and also has flying anxiety, I'm always down for a good train trip. I tend to relax, write, read on trains better than anywhere else. I recently took a train from LA up to Portland to visit a friend for the first time and it was wonderful watching the scenery change to snow. You also meet the most interesting and weird folks on a train, especially the elderly ones who are expert train travelers. They rule.

      I'm in the same boat where my options for travel are this or driving. Amtrak is great, but you pretty much NEED a sleeper room for cross-country trips. Provided you have that, you get to enjoy a perfect, private view out the window, three hot meals a day (hit or miss, but if everything goes right the menu is quite large), and a relatively peaceful sleeping atmosphere.
      Those trains also BLAST the ac 24/7 so if you run hot like me it's a perfect temperature.

    • @CuriousCat213
      @CuriousCat213 7 months ago +1

      @professornuub didn't have a sleeper on the Zephyr. The seats were plenty spacious. They're meant to be because they're long distance. Everyone was spread throughout and not near each other and I spent a lot of time reading on the floor to ceiling observation deck

    Trains in Germany are infamous for delays and cancellations, but someone told me Amtrak is worse, and you've proven it's true. I have been on Amtrak a few times, but only short distance journeys, so didn't know it could get this bad. Very clever to catch up by flying, I'm glad youmade it in the end.

  • @RailfanKnexified
    @RailfanKnexified 10 months ago +207

    As a railfan myself, I can definitely say Amtrak 40 (the train you rode on, Tonio) is a train that seems to be always delayed, along with the counterpart 41, whether it's half an hour to 14 hours late. It's usually around the southeast between florida and Washington D.C where it has the most trouble. I'm able to track these Amtrak trains and can catch them out along the rails. I can say that 40 has been the most seen in the past couple months since it was combined with 2 other Amtrak train symbols to become the 40 it is today

    • @keenlybee7669
      @keenlybee7669 10 months ago +9

      Wait, what do you use to track the trains? I know you can pull up active train statuses (and their fixed schedules) via the Amtrak app, but it’s only useful if you have a specific train in mind.

    • @dennisc6716
      @dennisc6716 10 months ago

      @keenlybee7669 Google "Intercity Rail Map." It's the best tracking site for Amtrak. It shows in an instant which trains are late and they are color coded by degree of lateness. It also tracks Via trains in Canada.

    What can i say.. the feeling I got when you and your friend arrived in Alaska safe and sound - was just pure joy and happiness. Me and my partner have took Amtrak everywhere due to his PTSD in flying in Cargo Planes in the Air Force and I must say it has been a game changer for us. From making memories, meeting nice people along the way and just enjoying our time together - it makes it worthwhile and a unforgettable experience. Our next destination is Alaska. Thanks for the video and keep on traveling!

    Honestly love traveling Amtrak and it's hard to explain why. If you're not in a huge rush it's so much more relaxing than flying, you got plenty of room, and most of the people I've sat next to in coach are super friendly. It helps that you're not constantly competing to sit comfortably like on a plane. I wish Amtrak was more efficient, but it is what it is. It's definitely a nice way to see the country though.
