    I’m in Southeastern Kentucky and after reading a lot of these comments, I asked my 71 year-old Dad if they had ice cream in milkshakes back in his day, he laughed and said, of course we did. He also said his Mom who always had canned pickles in her pantry would fry them for him and his siblings when they were young for a snack. But Dad said the hamburgers didn’t have eggs, chicken and all that other stuff on it back in the 50s here in Kentucky. Dad said the hamburger’s had cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup. He said you could have also gotten a double cheeseburger/hamburger if you wanted it. Dad said he never had a bacon cheeseburger until the 70s. He also said back in the day his favorite was a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions with mayonnaise only and french fries with lots of ketchup and a root beer float with 2 big scoops of ice cream on top.

      @southernsassy4453 I'm 77 and raised on a farm. Dad made half sour kosher style pickles in earthenware vats or crocks. We never heard of frying them until now when they fry everything that they can get into a fryer. I tried fried bread that you could literally squeeze the oil out of it. Who eats such stuff? Not me! We roasted marshmallows over a campfire.Not crazy about Smores. We had graham crackers in Kindergarten with a carton of milk before a nap on gym mats on the floor. You brought your own blanket. We couldn't afford new fads. We were old fashioned. I still haven't tried fried pickles...

      I thought milkshakes were supposed to be maid mainly of ice cream. When I saw all these instant milkshake powders that exist in the market I was SHOOK

      When we moved to this little town here in OH where I live now we had a pharmacy down town and it was mainly shopped at by the local older folk. This town was just starting to build due to Honda of America being built here in the 80’s. Inside they had a soda shop with a counter and maybe 10 swivel seats. It had a long bar that had all of the old fountains behind it and u could order up a grilled cheese, soup of the day, burger and fry and other diner foods like that. But the best was the ice cream floats and sodas that u could have with whatever syrup that U liked added to it and create ur own flavor. The building still stands “downtown “ but it is now a second hand donation store. They ripped out everything but the stairs going up to the second floor where people used to shop is still there. It was called the .5-25 cent shop back when it originally opened.

      @dlebrightable 10 months ago +3

      They were called "soda fountains" for the shop itself. Was a big fan 6:37 of "green river" soda, also vanilla coke. Not cherry coke fan but several friends enjoyed!!

    candied bacon is easy to make at home. loads of recipes online. you basically need to lay thick cut bacon on a rack over a pan and sprinkle a brown sugar mixture over it and cook in the oven.
    the idea of a banana split is great but it's just so much that i can never finish it which makes me sad

    Alessio, I once had the same problem of eating a tall burger that you did. The triple bacon cheeseburger that I ordered must have been TEN inches tall with a steak knife driven into it from the top to hold it together. I flagged a waitress for advice - I did not have to ask her because she answered after just seeing my facial expression: "Take out the knife and use it to cut the burger into quarters. The pick up one of the quarters lengthwise in your hands and eat it from one end.". It worked!

    I loved the diners in NYC, ca. 1963. Generally open to 1 / 2 am. Ordered any food paired with a Strawberry Malted. Before the food came, I put 25 c. in the Juke Box to hear Chuck Berry serenade us while we thought about the gals and our future. Me : USAF, during the VNam war. 2025 : if you want to return to these sweet moments, search for Diners in Northern New Jersey. I found some great ones -- Greek owned -- near Westfied, NJ. Arrive Hungry !! Classic Video.

    I know you get this a lot, but I'm so charmed by you two and your exploits in the USA and Europe. As life is not always a "bowl of cherries", I also appreciate your sharing your struggles over starting a family. There are plenty of diner food critics here, and as someone who was a kid in the 50's, going to a diner was a huge treat! The main thing is to enjoy the fun of it all, regardless of the "it's not quite authentic" or this or that place is better. Besides, this sure beats doomscrolling given what else is going on in the US and elsewhere. Best! dan-

    Food looked amazing, but as someone from the 50's and worked at one, I never heard of most these things (blue raspberry? Not until the 90's) and a burger had one patty with your choice of cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickle with mustard and catsup on the table/counter and you could ask the waitress for mayo to be put on it. Fries or chips but no onion rings. Hot Dogs and Club sandwiches. Vanilla, chocolate or strawberry shakes & malts (using real strawberries, and in the 60's pineapple also). Coke with a choice of cherry or vanilla if you were fancy. We weren't open for breakfast but ones that were had eggs, bacon, toast, oatmeal and later hasbrowns, coffee and hot tea. Nothing fancy like this place.

    Jessie u need to take him to a real old American Diner. The real deal. I know there was a few in PA but the Diner capital of America 🇺🇸 is NJ. If u look it up on RUclips I’m sure u will find the most popular one that’s supposed to sell and have the best fried chicken anywhere. Open 24/7. 365 days. Year. Any of these diners will be authentic in NJ. I’m from NJ and when I went to NJ every summer to spend the summer along the Jersey shore with my dad he would always take me at least once a week to a diner. Just him and I. Oh the memories.

      @ConcededSpatulaI don’t remember the name but there was one in Neptune that when I was little it was like an old passenger train looking thing. This was great fun to watch but I was born in 1952 and I never saw any of these foods. These are not from the 50s. Diner foods were much simpler. We had much smaller portions. Things like hot roast beef sandwich with gravy served with corn and mashed potatoes. Hamburgers were either 1 or 2 patties with cheese if you wanted and maybe fried onions. Hot dogs with fries. Reuben's I think. Malts and shakes were very popular but not with waffles on top. For lunch you had tuna or egg salad sandwiches on 2 pieces of bread, white or dark, toasted or not.

    • @lynneb.3935

      Yeah, I was born in 1953, and these portions and the food are nothing like what I saw growing up. Fried onions on a hamburger, yes. Smaller portions. No egg in with a hamburger, lol. This is a chain (also shows are nationwide weight problems)!

    • @HappyGothGal
      @HappyGothGal 11 months ago +2

      @ThePasinis I haven't lived there since 2010, but our favorite diner was The Americana. It's a Northeastern chain that has AMAZING omelettes & french fries.
      Also, almost all of my friends from NJ are Italian. Our favorite pizza spot was EASILY De Lorenzo's Tomato Pies in Central NJ. We had to show up 30 minutes to an hour before they opened because the line to get in was so long that they usually sold out BEFORE they even opened.
      Our favorite Italian spots were La Piazza Ristorante and Albivi. They also had excellent pizza (but not as good as De Lorenzo's), are both relatively close by, close to the highways, and also in Central NJ. I'd suggest Albivi over La Piazza, but La Pizza is easier to drive to.
      I hope you get to try NJ food! Almost no one on RUclips reviews food from NJ & I honestly can't remember having a single bad meal at any diner or Italian place in Central NJ (but it has been 15 years lol)
      Love the channel, love the couple goals y'all are setting for me, keep being excellent! 🖤💖💛

    • @LindaC616
      @LindaC616 11 months ago +2

      @ThePasinis throughout the Northeast corridor, you will find old subway cars that have been turned into restaurants. Here in Newport, we lost our Tommy's 4th Street Diner just a year or two ago, but we still have Gary's Handy Lunch. It has the same décor, the spinning stools, the cheap food. But you have to get there early, and it opens from 4 or 5 in the morning for the fishermen and closes about 2 or 3:00 in the afternoon. East Greenwich, Rhode Island has Jiggers Cafe in an old subway car, and there are plenty in Massachusetts as well. Fall River Massachusetts even has a McDonald's in an old train car.
      The diner originated in lunch wagons in Providence Rhode island, in the 1800s. I think the first diner in a fixed location was in Worcester Mass.

      I went to a diner in Victoria BC years ago I don't recall the name but the vibe was totally 50's I grew up in the 50's and they nailed it! Food was just like I remembered it ( I especially loved the malted- milkshakes)! People were dressed era appropriate, they had sawed in half hotrods on the walls etc, and performers, good ones, doing the juke box hits of the era. It was a time travel experience back to: "let the good times ROLL!"

      I want to try it with packaged meals and compare the label on the package to the count in the app for a reference point. Very interesting.

    • @dre27321
      @dre27321 11 months ago +21

      You can't. The app can't possibly tell the ingredients used and what amounts based on a photo, the most it can do is assume which means its most likely not going to be accurate and has a huge margin of error.

    • @LindaC616
      @LindaC616 11 months ago

      @dre27321 correct. There is a free app that is similar called bite snap. It isn't the best, and when I used it a few years back, it was not well populated. It wasn't very efficient at all, and as you say, it can only guess

    We have (soon to be had) a Connecticut favorite the Olympia Diner. Served all kinds of classic American food and up until maybe a decade ago, used to be open 24/7/365, so you would see a plethora of DOT trucks during the winter season gearing up for plowing the roadways. Was always a blast eating there as young adult/adult in the wee hours of the morning.

    Fun lunch but not very 50's. Stuff was too over the top. I've been to a few diners and worked on a lunch counter. Burgers were simple, other offers were hotdogs, tuna and egg salad sandwiches and grilled cheese. Shakes (without ice cream) and frappes (with ice cream). We only had vanilla, strawberry and choc syrups. You could also add syrups to a cola. Dessert was pie or ice cream with a little fudge sauce. Banana split would be had at an ice cream shop. Def need to go to another diner with simpler fare.

    • @janfitzgerald3615
      @janfitzgerald3615 11 months ago +3

      Depends on what part of the country you live in, in the Midwest and west a milkshake has ice cream and you won’t see frappe on the menu at all. 😉. However having been a teen in the sixties, I agree that the menu items and portion sizes are over the top. I recall burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, BLTs, egg or chicken salad, fries and usually cake, pie or ice cream for dessert. Breakfast would be eggs cooked to order, over easy, sunny side up, scrambled, and bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, oatmeal and cold cereal.

    • @tootz1950
      @tootz1950 11 months ago +1

      There were no frappes in the fifties and shakes were ice cream, milk, and flavoring. You need to not comment on something that you never experienced.

      @carolynturk-hu7je I seriously doubt you could get a three layered Belgian waffle with bacon and sausage from a diner back in the 50s. Nor would you find such a high stacked burger. Banana split? Sure, but not quite that elaborate. 1950's diner food tended to be simple, cheap, and very tasty.

    Years ago my family went to Tennessee for the first time and we went to the diner (not sure if it’s the same one but probably not). After dinner we shared a dessert of two banana splits (there are over 20 of us) and banana splits were huge. We didn’t need anymore than the two. I have a picture of my niece looking rather full looking at the ice cream. We loved the diner and went back one more time on that trip and then again the next time we went years later

    For a true Reuben, visit Katz’ Deli in NYC. Expensive, but piled high with the best corned beef you will ever have…and they make their own corned beef. It’s legendary. If you are ever in San Antonio, a downtown landmark is Shilo’s Deli. I’m not saying it will compete with Katz’, but it’s really darned good, and their Reuben is one of the best I’ve had.
