Nice design Paul, it would be interesting to see how well it would do in the winter as a camping shelter. It would be a whole lot warmer than a tent we know that.
To keep the interior cool longer orient the door facing North. Replace the East facing filter with the foam cut-out. This will preventing light (and heat) thru the filter during the early morning. Crack the door and take out the West vent to create cross ventilation (if it's not windy)
I just sold my huge Columbia tent, since we tired of setting up and taking it down for the zero comfort it provided, like most tents! I don't want the expense or maintenance of a camper, and this is exactly what I'm after! I don't know why all the outfitters aren't selling these!
Great presentation! I absolutely LOVE your inventions--I've seen a few of them. One idea that I've given some thought to lately is a shelter for backpackers/globetrotters that could be towed around like a suitcase. I hate paying big accommodation fees in places like London, for example, when all one needs to do is to 'recharge one's batteries' with 8hrs sleep.
Carol Glover I was just at the airport last night, and seeing an older gentleman trying to snooze on a lumpy bench got me rethinking my rent-a-cot idea. Some day.
Paul Elkins Thanks for your reply Paul. I've got this idea of a suitcase on wheels that would telescope out, so could then could be slept in. But I have no expertise in building and it might be an entirely unpractical concept! Cheers, Carol.
Carol Glover I design idea is sound and entirely possible. The 'where to sleep without getting hastled' is the problem. You may be able to find a quiet corner in an airport, but security may knock on your suitcase. It sounds similar to the homeless problem where most societies frown on urban sleeping without permission from the land owner.
Very cool, I live pretty close to where Burning man takes place and have always wanted to go, but figured a guy in his 40s would be out of place there lol.. guess not. I may have to talk the wife into it one year.

Another awesome project Paul. I am thinking of making a camper shell for the back of my truck that is light weight and can be folded up and stored easily. This gave me some ideas. Thanks.
I'm not sure how long this shelter would last in the outdoors Kaleb. It would depend on the amount of sun and rain exposure, and how it was handled. The skin is only foil paper and very fragile.
What if we could laminate something cheap but durable on it? I was thinking how they have different type foam panels available, they have a pink one that has no foil on it. If we laminate cardboard to it with exterior glue, then paint the cardboard and be sure to use monster tape is applied at all the edges permanently, one layer sealing the end of the cardboard wrapped around the edges, then one layer at the edges wrapped from the cardboard around the edge of the foam panel, then the last layer that holds the panels with each other, that last layer will be used and used over and over, and replaced, temporary layer that comes off when disassembling..
If it makes it 6 months youd be ahead of the game. Certainly some latex paint would greatly extend its life. Incorrectly mixed paint is usually very cheap.
But the only thing, how much does the monster tape cost to roll out new tape every time you set it back up again? It is cheaper to have a tent or something that don't use up materials every time just to set up, like $20 worth of monster tape or whatever. Just saying, you don't need a penny to set up a tent, there is a way to have a rigid structure that don't use up materials just to set up, like have rubber seals and hinges, latches, etc... they could be home made hinges and latches, and even homemade seals out of neoprene or some rubber. I like all your inventions, that is why i get imaginative with them. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Paul! :) I love this hexayurt! What a great design! I’m going to burning man this year and looking to build one myself. I was wondering if you have a pattern for this? I looked at your website but didn’t see anything for this design. Thank you!! :D
Hi Paul what a cool idea ever thought about something like that for bicycle or motorbike camping. Just wondering it it would work for that. Have a great day Mark
You know... you have designed some amazing stuff.. But there are many people off the grid that could us super bed to sleep , read, write and watch movies perhaps on a projector screen... Inside sleeping pods for thos off the grid would seem to be a worth while thing. have them melt wax during the day and bring it inside at night.
put A ROUND TAPERED PLUG ON TOPS THAT YOU CAN LIFT WHICH WOULD HAVE A SCREEN ON IT SO YOU CAN STAND UP..AND PUT SOME SOLAR CELLS UP ON TOP..OR PUT THOSE SOLAR CELL LIGHTS ON THE ROUND PLUG. I GUESS YOU COULD DRAP SOME WET TOWELS OVER THE TOP. OR PUT A WATER TRY ON TOP AS PART OF THE THE STRUTURE. HELL IF YOU COULD GLUE ALUMINUM FOIL UNDER HOLES CUT INTO THE ROOF THEY WOULD HOLD WATER AND PUT THE TOWELS INTO THAT. WHO KNOWS. MIGHT BE A NICE UNIT FOR ON TOP OF CAR ROOF. OR TOW IT BEHIND YOUR BICYCLE. WHY NOT MAKE A STREAM LINED COVER OVER YOU RECUMBENT AND THAT PART OF YOUR STGRUCGTURE..
Where would you find the foam board? My son is 19 an autistic. I've been wanting to do a project with him we can both use and enjoy making! I think this is such a great idea!
Go to home depot, lowes, or any lumber supply and ask them to direct you to the rigid foam insulating panels 4'x8' sizes, at least 4 if you want to make the structure in the video, have an extra one or more in case you get creative. The foam they sell in craft stores is too small, don't go there to buy it, you need 4'x8' , and you have choices of how thick, 2 inch or more would be pretty good to work with projects like this, they cost a pretty penny for what it is, but it is worth it considering the prices of everything else. I think he used 1 1/2" thick.
Would a hole in the roof with a turbo-vent in it help with the temp? Or as you mentioned, a pop-up box covered in wet swamp cooler pads or wet towels? I know it's possible to keep it cool without electricity. Blessings.
Jennifer Grove I've yet to experiment with swamp coolers, but I've seen many variations on RUclips. I'd like to see a non electrical one to keep things simple.
Paul Elkins I can't find the source, but years ago I saw a "primitive" building method that used branches for a wall, I think over a wattle-type base, and this provided shade and allowed air to move thru freely. I think this was in Afghanistan. Using this concept, you could prolly use swamp-cooler pads instead over a screen or netting base and wet them down 2x a day. At night, remove the pads and replace with foamboard. A similar idea is the way they keep water in canteens cool. Metal covered in canvas and soaked in water. Or the clay-pot refrigerator method, but that would be too heavy. I think for a lightweight little shelter, the cooler-pads over a plastic or metal screen would prolly work. The wind will do all the work. And I know it's windy there.
Jennifer Grove I'm going to my first burn this year and have been toying with cooling ideas myself. Originally I was thinking the diy swamp cooler using a home Depot bucket, fan, cooling pads and water pump. That would require a battery or solar. But your wind idea has me thinking. What if you built a shelter like this with the pads in the window like you said, but used a little DC waterpump to keep them moist. Alternatively, you could just figure out the timing of a gravity fed drip system if you were willing to switch out buckets. The only thing with the wind would be predicting it's direction right? If you wetted pads on both sides, seems like you'd be wasting 50% of your moisture. Thanks for the idea!
Three 4-foot x 8-foot sheets. Cut all in half, to make six 4-foot x 4-foot sheets. You no have four walls and a roof. Tape the walls and the roof in a mock-up and use the last sheet to fill the gaps between the four walls. Door and window are not that tough. Give it a shot.
Nice design Paul, it would be interesting to see how well it would do in the winter as a camping shelter. It would be a whole lot warmer than a tent we know that.
That's pretty great, actually. Surprised it's so sturdy.
This is your best yet. Wish I could buy one. Good in a desert probably too.

Nice shelter!
Chillest old man maker on the tube right here.
You are wonderful. I love your creations, but YOU are the coolest!!!
Awesome design! In Los Angeles they've been struggling with the homeless situation , I would love to see your projects put through the test .
I like your shelter videos....especially the mobile shelters.

Agree!
Love it. You even have a little rhythm. 🤗

What a great idea! I'll buy a block of land in Somers and put this on it.
Man, your one of my real life heroes. Very inspired by your work would be an honour to work with you. Thank you for being you
Now I need to see your swamp cooler!

I like the "temporary obsession". Beats hyperfocus, more honest :)

This is nice I like the first shelter
Your amazeing man
I am charmed with very much all his video but I would like that step along step was explaining them since it is the construction of each one
I sell plans on some things that I've made. It's difficult to make plans so I don't make them too often. Only for my more popular items.
Great idea!!!!

You should try a smaller version of this for the homeless
What are the extreme dimensions of this thing you made?
