    I had similar problems when I shielded one of my basses. The copper tape I used was advertised as having conductive adhesive but when I checked with a meter I found that it was not, so I had to spend at least another hour fixing the issue. Fortunately I checked continuity before re-installing the rest of the electronics.

    I had a surprise when doing a slug tape shielding job.
    I fully expected tp have to make solder joints to maintain constant nudity but as I had burnished all the pieces to smooth them down they ALL made good contact.
    No special adhesives just a bit of OCD burnishing.
    I had had it in mind to pierce them here and there but they didn't need it.
    Result.
    So far it appears to have held no problem ...

    Small gaps in the tape are actually not a problem, as long as there is continuity.
    There is a lot of OCD in DIY shielding practice. 60hz AC hum has such a long wavelength that it can be quite effectively shielded using chicken wire. Solid shielding is only required for extremely high frequencies... There is nothing wrong with making a shielding job look good, but the two problems come from no continuity, bad/dirty connections that create resistance which can cause hum by creating a resistive circuit in the shield... and areas too close to the switches/pots/wiring that can cause a short from a signal wire to ground.
    So yes, absolutely, bad shielding is unquestionably worse than poor shielding. TBH, factory shielding is more than adequate on *most* modern guitars.
    Merry Christmas Dave, hope you, your family, and your viewers have a good holiday and a prosperous 2020!

    Copper tape with conductive adhesive. Look at the adhesive with about 10x loupe and you can see the little ground up bits of copper. You can reliably press it down just one time. If you pull it up and put it back down most of the copper bits get pushed into the adhesive in such a manner that they no longer touch on both sides of the adhesive layer. Pull it up twice or more and you might as well just throw it away. Stabbing with the xacto knife is a suitable way to restore conductivity but I don't know how long that will last. Best thing is to solder all the tape joints.
    Years ago I did a comparison of my Strat with copper tape before and after. No difference in hum. Then I used mu-metal. That made a difference. But mu-metal is expensive and brittle and cuts you to ribbons and doesn't solder worth a flip so I used indium solder. I hate to say it but the best thing to reduce humm is hummbuckers. Several decades ago I got some active hummbuckers for my strat. Has a very similar punch of non hummbuckers. Probably even better ones available today. But I'm not a purist. I would gladly trade my original Ibanez tube screamer for five hundred bucks and one of the newest versions.

    My Japanese Jaguar bass was very noisy even though it came from the factory with shielding paint and foil on the back of the pickguard. However the paint didn't go above the cavities. A quick strip of copper tape around the lip of all the cavities and hey presto jobs done. Really nice instrument, no more noise, although the neck is a tad skinny for my liking.

  • @michaelogden5958
    @michaelogden5958 4 года назад

    I just finished shielding two of my single coil guitars - mostly out of sheer curiosity. I highly recommend StewMac's adhesive copper tape. It sticks pretty well on reasonably prepared surfaces AND the adhesive is conductive. (I don't get a dime from StewMac, but they seem to get quite a few of mine). I also highly recommend an abundance of time and patience if one wants to do a decent and correct job. Did it make a difference? Hum was reduced a bit here in my little excuse for a recording studio. I haven't gigged in years, so I can't say how well it works out there where the really nasty EMI lives.

    Hi! Does absence of the foil beneath the electronics compartment cover render the rest of conductive paint shielding literally useless? I have a bass that pickups that zzzzzzzzz noise while I'm not touching anything metal. And the amount of buzz is changing compared how firm the touch is from very noisiy to dead quiet gradually. Multimeter check indicates that everything is in continuity. Except the plastic cover that does not have any shielding on it.

    • @DavesWorldofFunStuff
