  • Amira auditioned for Holland's Got Talent and impressed the judging panel with her version of "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi;within seconds the judges were staring in awe and disbelief. Her performance rapidly became a RUclips hit with over 36 million viewers as of June 2015. In the semi-finals, she performed Gounod's "Ave Maria", and in the final, she sang "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's opera Turandot. She won the competition with over 50% of the viewer vote.

    Yes, there is no doubt about the wonderful sound of Amira's voice and people love to hear her sing but there is another profound quality of this gracious young girl, the charm of her nature combined with her natural personality and her own wisdom, radiating her inner beauty is very appealing. We will all continue to be inspired by her natural radiance.

    Nice job Steve. Your interview displayed what a truly charming and authentic person Amira really is. Loved listening. I wish you would have asked her when next alblum is coming out and how she learned English so quickly.Also I need clarification on the artist she was referring to when she said she listens to 80 music. My hearing is not to good but I thought she said it was Neil Young. If it was, it was actually 70"s music and he was the go to Artist when many of us Veterans in USA were coming home to from Viet Nam. That is amazing if that is who she is listening to. Because his music and her music soothe the soul.

    • @sabineausmg9543
      @sabineausmg9543 7 лет назад +2

      +Mike Huskins: 1.) Amira is going to record her 3rd album in July 2017 in South Africa. 2.) She said she likes music of Céline Dion and the music of the 80s. I have to disappoint you that she doesn't listen to grunge. ;-)

    • @mikehuskins1849
      @mikehuskins1849 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the clarification that makes more sense. By the way Neil Young is not considered grunge. Music of early 90's such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam ect

    • @sabineausmg9543
      @sabineausmg9543 7 лет назад +2

      Sorry, I didn't know him before but this is an excerpt from Wikipedia: "His gritty guitar work, especially with Crazy Horse, earned him the nickname "Godfather of Grunge".

    • @mikehuskins1849
      @mikehuskins1849 7 лет назад +3

      Sabine no problem I also went to Wikipedia at least the American version and didn't see that quote. Personally I don't hear any resemblance to grunge. I'm not personally attracted to grunge.To me his earlier music before the crazy horse album was soothing , easy listening and at the time very popular. Listen to the song Old man or Harvest Moon and compare to any song by Pearl Jam and your notice a difference. Any way this is about Amira , who is the new star of today, especially with all the craziness in the world she brings us all back to normal. The only comparison I was making was that Neil Young did the thing in the early 70"s. Music totally different but same effect.

    • @idlingdove5217
      @idlingdove5217 7 лет назад +2

      +Mike Huskins I also looked up Neil Young on Wikipedia and found the exact quote mentioned by +Sabine aus MG: Young is supposed to be the "Godfather of Grunge". Not quite sure where that came from. Maybe later on his style changed, but for me the name Neil Young conjures up his 1960's and 70's classic style epitomized by Buffalo Springfield and CSN (Crosby, Stills and Nash). These bands have little, in my opinion, in common with early 1990's grunge bands epitomized by Nirvana and Pearl Jam (although I also appreciate their music). Anyway, getting back to Amira, I didn't understand what she said either, but I don't think it was Neil Young...

      Sherman, because of watching your interview with Amira, I looked at some of the other interview videos you have done and you have indeed interviewed fascinating people. A great idea for you to do these interviews. I hope you you get lots of new viewers from the interview with Amira. I liked the 'being in the room with her' casual approach you took. You did do much of the talking at times, but I'm thinking that you expected many more questions to come from the kids and had to fill the gaps at times and come up with more questions yourself. Unfortunately there was a distraction when you asked her how she thought her voice might change in the next few years and that got forgotten. Another question I had hoped someone would ask was when did she think she would make a 3rd cd but no one did! Congratulations - a 'one of a kind' interview that gave a lovely glimpse into what down to earth person Amira is. She is quite unique.

    What is shown here is a real-life angel
    It's a technique that allows angels to do something that makes me smile and speak even words that are difficult to answer without words or words that are difficult to answer for a long time, and that don't embellish anything, fascinate, heal, and smile all while staying as it is
    God, please protect our Amira

    Funny when people ask her how she can do what she does, She can never answer the question. Humanity did something good so God gave us Amira, Or more likely, God sent Amira to help humanity, Either way she is an Angel. I did see a bit of rebel in her when she said she would want to sing with Jackie. Amira would blow Jackie off any stage and she knows it, Maybe she wants to put the comparisons to rest, Haha.

    • @edgoudreau2267
      @edgoudreau2267 7 лет назад +5

      Good point with Amira being uncertain about her gift and its impact on people. She just wants people to like classical/opera music like she does, and that's that. I was a bit confused when she mentioned Jackie. She probably doesn't have a contentious bone in her body, and perhaps sincerely wants to meet her and/or sing with her - just another facet of Amira to look forward to down the road!

      Hi Graeme, many thanks for your feedback. I am sure that you can appreciate that the interview is targeting an audience of young children who don't know Amira as they don't normally have access to social media. I appreciate that Amira's biggest fans would be watching this interview with certain expectations. As long as her character and sheer talent came through then I am pleased. One must remember that there are many documentary videos about Amira and I did not want to rehash all the same content. That being said, Amira enjoyed the interview and I look forward to connecting with her in June when she visits South Africa.

    OMG... What is that creature babbling there? Embarrassing, really. I am citing: "And like most 9yos, a few years ago, she decided to enter a talent competition..." Honestly: How many 9yos you know are to enter a talent competition on TV? I now a lot of talented kids, but none of them actually did nor plan to do something like that. To be absolutely clear about that: Their parents would never allow. Irrespective of that I am asking myself how someone can be so stupid to ask a 13yo what drove her to that "decision" - at 9 yo! Brrrrr.. if I was her, I would just go into hiding until I'd be old enough to really make my own decisions.

    • @sabineausmg9543
      @sabineausmg9543 7 лет назад +5

      As Amira explained in the documentary "documentary Omroep Gelderland Dec 2016 with English subtitles" she only was 7 years old when she first asked her parents to let her participate at "Holland's got Talent". Of course they told her that she still is too young. 2 years later they couldn't say "no" any more because Amira kept on begging her parents for letting her participate. By the way, my daughter was 7 years old when she decided to become a paramedic. Today she is 21, she does work as a paramedic and is planning to start a training as an assistant in an emergency rescue helicopter. Please note that there do exist children who know what they want!

    • @edgoudreau2267
      @edgoudreau2267 7 лет назад +4

      I agree with ClassicBird that it was an odd statement that most 9 YOs decide to enter a talent show. But I agree with Sabine that Amira knew what she wanted to do early on and worked very hard on her singing for over 2 years prior to HGT. Her parents didn’t automatically let Amira enter HGT just because Amira “decided” she wanted to; they waited until they felt she was old enough. Her parents, and no one else, were in the position to make that judgement call. Life is often not “one size fits all”. Imagine if all kids were barred from talent competitions until they were “old enough” to make their own decisions (14, 16, 18, whatever). Amira (and other talents like her) and the world would be greatly deprived of the kind of enrichment that only a gifted and talented child like Amira could bring.

    • @granttrumbo7937
      @granttrumbo7937 7 лет назад +4

      The big decisions to persist to finally achieve parental permission to participate on HGT and to change voice teachers in order to pursue her operatic goals indicate that Amira has known what she wants and has never gone nor will ever have to go into hiding. Some children like Amira (and Alma and Sabine's daughter et al.) can make their own decisions at a very young age.

      Steve, it seems like some folks were thrown off by your style because they may not have understood that as an educator, your main target audience was schoolchildren. For the next time, perhaps you could better explain that in your video intro or in the discussion portion of the YT post. I do have one nit: the volume of your voice was considerably greater than Amira's, which may have given the impression of being "overbearing". Can you equalize the volumes a bit? I look forward to your next interview with Amira!

    I thought this interview was very interesting, but:
    1) It was way too long. Amira was getting pretty worn down towards the end.
    2) The interviewer was too pushy and spoke too much. If you compared the airtime of the interviewer's speech to that of Amira's you would probably get about 3:1. A good interview should be the other way round.
    On the plus side, Amira showed a great spontaneity and genuineness of character, which only reinforced the image I already had of her. And, it also effectively silences all those who claim that she must have had singing lessons prior to her HGT performance: from her honest and innocent answers, that was evidently not the case.

      In truth, a child's answers tend to be short and sweet, and in this sense the child interviewee needs prompting, which the interviewer did well. But I agree with you that the interview should have not became so long. Too much pressure on one so young.

    Now I have listened to an extremely talented, and very "down to earth" young lady, and I am even more impressed than I have been before. The initial talent contest in Holland was my introduction to Amira, and I must admit that I am unable to listen to her without weeping before she finishes a song. For her to have such a talent, and that she has remained as "meek and down to earth", is a tremendous trait that I have the utmost respect for. I truly wish for her to have the exact life that she wishes to have. Her generousity is admirable, and I hope that her manager can assist her in the proper control of the large amount of assets that she will no doubt gather,,so that she will also be able to prepare for her future, and that of her family, and retirement. God has given her a tremendous talent, and she is giving it to us in turn. There are so few people that have her opportunity to contribute to the world, and I am truly grateful that I have been able to hear her sing,,,,,,,also glad that I can listen to her sing whenever I wish, by going to my computer. I am also very impressed with her mastery of the English language. I remain a very avid admirer, and introduce her to any and all of my friends !

    Amira's comment that singing to her is just like walking reminded me of a story about Enrico Caruso. His personal physician was in the process of writing a book entitled Caruso's Voice Production. He handed the manuscript to Caruso and asked him to check whether he correctly described Caruso's voice production technique. Without looking at a single page Caruso handed the manuscript back to the good doctor and said: I have no idea how I produce my voice. I just open my mouth and the voice comes out. Perhaps, in connection with this it might be worth mentioning how somebody else described Caruso's voice. When the then director of La Scala learned of Caruso's untimely passing he stated that there are many great Tenors who have the same physical attributes, such as vocal cords, etc., as Caruso but in Caruso's case all these different attributes worked in complete harmony.

    I can tell you this about Opera singers today: Most of my life I could not stand sopranos singing opera. It was like fingernails on a chalk board, it would make my ears bleed. For some reason, we may never know the answer short of a scientific investigation, the sopranos today sound so beautiful they quicken your very soul and bring tears of joy to your eyes. And I have to be honest, for me, this all began with Jackie Evancho, and then to Amira, and couple of other up and coming soprano opera singers. There is just something very different and beautiful about soprano opera singers voices today which was not there before.

    • @edgoudreau2267
      @edgoudreau2267 7 лет назад +4

      Michael R. Foreman - interesting experience. I never hated opera, just was bored with it because I could never understand the sung words. But Amira connects with my soul in a way that it doesn't matter whether I can hear or understand the words - the voice and feeling alone are enough. Also, I am middle aged and appreciate finer classical music more than before. Might it be possible that the change you experienced is more than just recent fine young opera singers, but also that your music appreciation is changing as you grow older? Just wondering.

    • @dr.michaelr.foreman2170
      @dr.michaelr.foreman2170 7 лет назад +1

      Nope. My interests in music have not changed. I still dislike rap immensely. And I still love to play rock and roll riffs on my guitar. All I know, is sopranos today, are not the sopranos of decades ago. I have sang in choirs which have sang before the Queen and at Canterbury, singing mainly classical music from the greats - but that has nothing to do with it either.

    • @edgoudreau2267
      @edgoudreau2267 7 лет назад +1

      Michael, thanks for your reply. So let's just sit back and enjoy the recent spate of fine young sopranos like Amira - no analysis needed!

    • @dr.michaelr.foreman2170
      @dr.michaelr.foreman2170 7 лет назад +1

      Your comment does not even compare apples to oranges. It is irrelevant to the topic. We are not talking about Amira at age 9 and Amira aged at age 13, we are talking about how the sopranos have changed over the decades - from blood curdling screeching by a woman trying to be a soprano when she was really an alto to sopranos today who are natural, and sound like angels.

      My guess is that even if Amira decides to pursue law, singing will still be a "hobby" or side activity. In any case, she has a few years to decide which way to go, years in which she is free to be a "normal" teenager and choose her own path. I sure hope that path includes singing!

    This interview shows how annoying a poorly done interview can be. First, is the camera too close to her face? Her face seems slightly distorted. Second, she looks a bit tired.
    Third, the interviewer talks too much, putting words into Amira's mouth, and he talks too loudly. He seems enchanted with his own voice. Also, some irrelevant questions. He doesn't allow Amira to be her humorous, creative self-to show her poise, her amazing humanity, which is what a good interviewer can do. I did learn a few things from the interview, but not 56 minutes worth-such as when she sings she looks above the audience at the lights and basically sings to herself as if she were singing in the shower. Other singers, so I've read, pick out one person in the audience and sing to that person. Also, her manager didn't respond very well to why she has been so successful and not forgotten. Two added things, besides her voice and singing ability (and control of her voice), are her personality (never taking herself totally seriously) and the fact that she sings with such feeling. You can't listen to her and not weep.

    • @SteveSherman
      @SteveSherman  7 лет назад +8

      Hi Stan, many thanks for your constructive feedback. In Amira's defence, the interview had some technical glitches whereby the pc they were using was unable to connect and subsequently they used a cellphone for the interview. This would impact on the quality of the picture and sound as well as the movement of the device. Regarding my interviewing skills, perhaps your expectations were aimed too high to begin with as it was an informal interview with children as the main audience and allowing them to participate in the interview as well. Regarding me liking the sound of my own voice... quite to the contrary but it is the only one I have.One has to bear in mind that English is not Amira's mother tongue and teens are not by nature overly conversational. There were no set questions and the impromptu interview took the form of a discussion. I value your feedback and will take this into account for future interviews.

    • @edgoudreau2267
      @edgoudreau2267 7 лет назад +6

      Stan - I agree with your comments about Amira but not with those about the interviewer. IMO Steve not only interviewed Amira well but tried to speak with the target audience in mind - school children. Sometimes he rephrased or summarized Amira's sharing, or emphasized some good points, to benefit his audience. I am puzzled by your observation about Steve not bringing out Amira. The entire 56 minutes demonstrated Amira's poise and just being herself, responding to numerous off-the-cuff questions and dealing with technical issues. Not sure what "humorous" and "creative" entertainment you were expecting from Amira, but Steve did nothing to stifle it. In addition to your other comments about Amira, she is also humble and not given in to flair for flair's sake. One other comment: I thought Steve was quite considerate by not interrupting or being condescending with Amira, unlike many other interviewers of young celebrities. If you've seen some of the interviews conducted with Grace VanderWaal, you'll know what I mean!

    • @maryyexley3021
      @maryyexley3021 7 лет назад +4

      Steve, I have to agree that you overwhelmingly dominated this interview. Amira is so polite that she backed off and let you talk and talk and talk, even though I'm sure she had plenty to share. Please remember that you are conducting an interview to draw a person out and not to expound on your own suppositions and fantastical thinking. I found a lot of what you said very silly and annoying. I'm not trying to be mean, just honest.

    • @jashepoon
      @jashepoon 6 лет назад +1

      Mary Yexley you are sure that Amira had plenty to share? Did you notice how many short answers ("yes") Amira gave? Imo he let her talk when she had something to say and he didn't interrupt her. I too don't think that everything he said we necessary but I liked how he was very positive and supportive towards her talent and actions and parents and picked up some kind of running gags (e.g. Willighagen Opera, the beverages in South Africa...) which made the interview funnier (for me), and created some context.
      And he did ask some "hot" questions which I like, namely -off the top of my head - about her singing prior to the competition (as Wikipedia states that she was in a choir and had had some elementary lessons) and if the jury knew about her singing skills beforehand.
      Anyway, thanks for the interview!

    Great interview. I am a late comer to the Amira fan world as I was just recently forwarded her HGT audition, and I was blown away by it. When I searched RUclips for additional clips of her I found many performances and interviews. The performances speak for themselves, but most interviews appear to spend more tine with the interviewer and little is really learned about the interviewee. Your wonderful format allowed Amira to be the focus of the interview and having her on camera for the entire time exposing her various moods and reactions, allowing me to get the know the person she is. Great work! One last comment, when you asked what her secret was to her longevity on the market, Jan espoused the obvious about her talent, but for me it is not only her obvious talent, but also her wonderful personality... this young lady is "good people" :) Thank you.
