  • Zendaya and Tom Holland may have kept their romance out of the spotlight in the early days, but those on set saw the sparks flying. According to K.C. Undercover star Tammy Townsend, the couple’s relationship quietly unfolded while Zendaya was simultaneously filming the Disney Channel series and Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. “I knew it was serious,” Townsend, 54, told People magazine as she reflected on the show’s 10th anniversary. “Tom would just come through and see what we were doing.”

Townsend, who played Zendaya’s mother on the show, revealed that while the duo kept things discreet, the chemistry between them was undeniable. “[We] definitely knew that there was a really strong connection,” she said, adding that Holland was “a really cool kid.” Trinitee Stokes, who played Zendaya’s on-screen little sister, also recalled Holland hanging around set for weeks. “He’s so funny,” Stokes, 18, shared. “I love Tom, and I honestly have been so happy to watch this progression in their relationship because he’s such a great guy.”
What started as a quiet on-set connection soon became one of Hollywood’s most beloved relationships. While Zendaya and Holland denied dating rumours in 2017, everything changed in 2021 when they were spotted kissing. Holland later made things Instagram official, calling Zendaya “my MJ.”
Zendaya later reciprocated by calling Holland “my Spider-Man.”
Fast forward to 2025, and the couple is engaged something Townsend and Stokes say was meant to be from the start. The pair had been participating on Lip Sync Battle, but one section of the show left the Dune star looking less than impressed.
Zendaya's reaction to 'Spider-Man' appearing on Lip Sync Battle.
Zendaya put on an impressive perfomance to Bruno Mars' '24K Magic' while Holland broke the internet with his iconic rendition of Rihanna’s 2007 hit ‘Umbrella’.
After his perfomance, host Chrissy Teigen descended from the ceiling upside down while wearing the iconic Spider-Man mask.
Now, anyone who has seen the 2002 Spider-Man movie, starring Tobey Maguire, knows that there is one scene in particular which this evokes.
It sees Spider-Man fighting off a group of thugs and saving Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst, as rain pours down.
After saving the day Spider-Man descends down, hanging upside down from a web.
He and Mary Jane then share a kiss in the pouring rain while he is still upside down.
And given Holland took on the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zendaya seemed to quickly put two and two together.
The star's face visibly fell as she appeared to be thinking that Holland was about to recreate the famous scene - with another woman.
It's not clear if the pair were actually dating at the time but rumors started circulating after they met on set of Spider-Man.
After the clip recently resurfaced on social media, fans were quick to spot Zendaya's reaction and took to the comments to share their thoughts.
One commented on Instagram: "She was about to throw some fuckin hands."
While another wrote: "Zendaya's smile faded like she was going to light that place up."
A third posted: "She was ready to fight lmao."
