  • Here's a guitar lesson on of the most famous solos ever - a guitar lesson on the Stairway to Heaven Solo Note for Note. If there was one band that stood out during then 70's as a yardstick for how good you were as a guitarist, it was Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page was regarded in many circles as "The Best." Period. Here's a guitar lesson on exactly that - how to play the Stairway to Heaven solo note for note. Stairway to Heaven Solo tutorial Note for Note.
    And of course, their signature song was Stairway to Heaven. Now you had to know the beginning ... that goes without saying ... but everybody KNEW you were a great player if you could play Page's solo from that song. There's no doubt it's a good one. Very bluesy, but also very memorable. Even Frank Zappa did it - with the horn section doing the solo even!! (you can see it here: • Video ). In any event, you should put it into your repertoire. Enjoy!!

      I am from 1972 and Starways is simply the first rock song i remember listening to . This was late 70's I was 8 or 9 on my fathers radio, he didnt even have a hifi at that time !I was shocked by the power and melody , compare to the child song i was used to. And it took me years before discovering what was the name of the song/band, its only at high school that i figured out ! Song of my life ! And now thanks to Mark I'm learning the solo !

    Mark. These tutorials are great. Thanks. I do wonder if you could spend a little time talking about the right hand though. I have real trouble getting up to speed. For example, in the first and most famous phrase does it help if you pick up (the direction of the run) or doesn't it matter. Sometimes its not so easy to see in the video.
    Of course, it may be because you've practiced for years and I am trying to learn this between emails.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! I do talk about picking quite often, but not when I don't perceive it's tricky. (Sometimes I don't see it, as I'm very comfortable picking most anything as you say. Lots of sweat when I was younger.).
      I think for the first lick I sometimes start with a downstroke on the 1st string and sometimes with an upstroke. Then I use alternate picking for the rest whatever I do first.

      You're welcome. Yes, chasing down tone to the nth degree I believe is a losing battle. Supposedly he used a Fender 1959 Telecaster played through a Supro Amp ... although he was a bit fuzzy on the amp, saying in an interview it may have been a Marshall. I just try to dial it in close enough and then let my ears and fingers do the best job they can. Over time I have found I get better that way. I'll never be *exactly* where Jimmy Page was, but that's impossible (and not really even desirable IMHO ... incorporate his style, but you still want to be you). As long as you and others enjoy it ... that's what it's about I think.

This helps. Once Jimmy gets to that hight e string on the 17th, he spices it up a bit live. Lots of variations of course. But the studio version that you do is special. Mark, Been playing since I was 9, classically taught... 60 now and in a Heart tribute Band that is performing Heart's version from when Zep was inducted into Hall of Fame. Excellent breakdown of an epic solo from an epic song. Your skills as a player are matched by your skills as a teacher. Best video out there, PERIOD. Subscribed to the channel right away and looked for possibly a video of the lead from "No Quarter".. Have you done it and I'm just not seeing it? If so; point me in the right direction my friend. Again, well done all around. Peace

    I really enjoyed learning from you. I've been a drummer for many years. Since 17 years old till 44 now. I've been playing rhythm guitar for quite a while from being around it and play pretty good. But never learned to play leads. Until now. I've decided it's time. Lol. So watching your video and a couple others I've memorized the stairway solo but gotta get a little faster and more fluid with it. It's crazy how almost everyone plays this lead different. And I mean really different. Yours seems to be pretty right on with the original recording. So thanks for that!!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Brian! Glad you liked it. I do my best to make it sound right, but I'm not a stickler for getting "exactly what Jimmy Page played" in terms of fretboard position and such. He has his own hands and I have mine and you have yours. I like to get it pretty close, but then make choices on what works best for me. I think I got this one pretty close, so thanks for the acknowledgment!

      Thanks Mark! I try, and I love many of these songs, so maybe that's what comes out in my play. At least I hope so. I also try not to take myself seriously, so that helps. You know, back in the day whenever I was having fun on stage (no matter what I was playing) it always worked and I would get asked back either as a sideman or to play some other time. And that was true no matter what the venue or genre ... rock, bluegrass, bars, weddings, stages, you-name-it. Music is about having fun. But yeah, sometimes it's fun to sound good too! :)

    • @MarkZabel

      Hi Luis. I would not try this as your 1st solo. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone" or "Mainstreet" or "Easy" (Commodores) or "Suffragette City" or "Up Around the Bend" would all be better. It's important to learn how to articulate notes properly. Those are better, because you'll be less pre-occupied with playing fast and actually getting your fingers on the right frets quickly.
