I bought this dvd in 2021. Probably the best native pottery and firing dvd I have come across. So grateful to have found this timeless film! When it autoplayed on my youtube playlist, I actually didn't realize it was a film at first, I thought it was just a short episode of a tv program. After watching the whole thing, I knew I needed to own it for myself as a great keepsake and reference material. The soundtrack is lovely too! Everyone did amazing work on this production. Hope to see more material from them again.

Anyone else marvel at how he stayed so clean, sitting out in the desert, digging/working clay, grinding iron oxide and painting, etc etc? I'd have looked like Pigpen from Charlie Brown about an hour in, I'm certain...
You'd be surprised how neat a person can remain under their circumstances..especially if someone is an expert at their job! I was a Janitor for YEARS and I never came home dirty or all messed up. I worked very hard. It's a physically demanding job, especially if you're a Woman, like me!
Tony Soares is an amazing potter, artist, craftsman and teacher. We supplied clay to him for a short time, nice red clay from Sage, the pottery he made from it was amazing!

Watching it you could tell he truly loves making it. You could just sense the good vibes he puts into it. After the pot was all done and he showed it, It resembled a lady bug with her wings open on one side and closed on the other..... I'm glad to hear that you are passing on the teachings of your grandma and therefore your ancestors..
The narrator is Anna La Cazio - diva vocalist from 80’s band Cock Robin. She is one of Rock n Rolls most beautiful songstresses ever to rock a stage. I’m a 53 year old indigenous man from Aotearoa New Zealand - I recognised her voice from the other side of forever lost in an unrequited 80’s teenage crush.
Here in the pacific pottery is found across the expanse of the Lapita pottery cultures. Here in Aotearoa we were a culture who did not possess a pottery tradition as it was lost as a practice during the great star navigation migrations here to the end of the earth a thousand years ago. While we did not possess a pottery tradition we did employ clay as a food and also as a fired substance used to line our latrines and our hearths in our villages. We also employed clay in our dye’s and in our body facial paints as kōkōwai.

This month, I've seen 3 ways in which people work with clay to make bowls: the wheel, manually free hand (Arica, no form) and now this, a base put to form the new pot. Amazing man's ingenuity with resources on hand and the imagination behind what beauty emerges from it all.

fascinating how the damp clay resembles human or animal flesh as it ripples when its being forged into shape, it must take a lot of sensitive skill to not ruin it by being heavy handed. This potter has relentless patience

This subject matter is very informative, thanks. I've never seen clay being processed like that on a metate, although it seems to work well. I always thought they were only used in food prep. Also interesting to see him extracting clay from a flat plain. Usually you see someone taking it from a dirt bank of some sort. Interesting also that he doesn't seem to need to sieve, strain, or slurry his clay in any way. It seems to be very fine particles naturally. And finally, I often see stones like the one he is using on the inside of the pot and have always wondered if they were some kind of tool and how they were used. Somewhere I read/heard that they were used in games, but I see now how perfect they were for clay processing and potmaking.

For a short time I worked for Glen Apple man. He is a Ceramicist by trade. What a wonderful artist and all around pleasant man! His partner Harry Zehrler or Zerler
treated us all so well! It was a small company. The studio was this gigantic loft in an old industrial building in Union City, NJ. My job there was to glaze the the already baked item. Then my close friend Debbie Winfield, would add the luster. That's chemical and mineral based and the cookie jar is put back into the kiln again. Poof! You have a shiny new ceramic cookie jar! What wonderful times we had. Paul Napoli was one name I remember..the other two girls' names slip my mind..

I did try pottery once and was completely intimidated by the clay when it was in the elastic form!!
