Hi Corporal Kelly hope you and you're family are doing good I finally get to watch this one keep the video's coming 👍👍👍♘ thank you Corporal Kelly great video ♘ 👍👍👍C😎😎L
2 years later...Just found your channel. So, when I was about 13-14 (20+ years ago, I guess) years old, I went to a survival camp, and we had a land-nav course. We were given some brief education on compasses, maps, landmarks, and shelters. Long story short...my partner and myself got way off-course from the course. We used the skills we were taught about compasses and maps and navigation to find our way back. To be arrogant, we used those skills we learned in a real life situation, and met our search party that was looking for us. What I'm trying to say is: Learn to read maps and use a compass. GPS systems can go down. When SHTF, what are you gonna do?
I have been using my map and compass for years. I have watched all of your map, compass and land navigation videos this week. I have watched many others as well. Your videos have clarified and helped me to the point that I no longer need a GPS. I hunt Southern California mountains where there is not much game, except for private land. I just like to get out and scout hike to find deer trails. Then travel back at night to my chosen site and wait for the sun to come up. I haven't been lost yet. I think your videos are the best training I have ever seen or watched. I subscribed to your channel and will follow you, I am a 71-year-old US Army vet, but most of my friends are jarhead Marines. That just goes to show that I can even learn from a jarhead. Thanks, Brother.
I remember that pink 19 tag very well. My partner and I were the last pair out that night of our basic class at around 11:00 pm. We debated at length whether it was a 19 or (read upside down) a 61. We settled on 61 and spent a lot of time exploring Dave’s property after dark! (We suggested a line underscoring the bearing would be helpful.). We eventually used the pipeline as a backstop and handrail to make our way back to camp. It was raining the whole weekend, too. It was an awesome weekend! Really! :-)
Thank you first for serving our wonderful country as all four of my forefathers served in the Revolutionary War and two of them under Washingtons command. Second thank you for making all your videos as they all serve a purpose in helping with survival in this ever changing world. One day we.may all need some of these but yet I am still optimistic.
Excellent vid. I have some red wing irish setters i got a few years ago. They are amazing boots. Very well made. Other than a lil patina on the leather, they look new after many, many klicks.
I've enjoyed your videos on map reading and compass skills that I've bought them. I've never done any of this before so I thank you for getting me interested in exploring the outdoors. Keep up the excellent work as I'm sure its valued by many, including me!
Hey, just wanted to say "thank you" for this series. I worked my way through them today and I feel like I learned a great deal in a short amount of time. Will be revisiting them from time to time.
I know many folks who swear by red wing boots so its no surprise to hear you like em. Great tips on staying at the actual point and checking for next bearing.
Love my Irish Setter work boots. On my 3rd pair, I’ve resoled each pair twice. They last and last and I wear them most days for 15 hours. The only other shoes I own are flip flops and snow boots.
One thing you have to know about Irish Setters before buying is to have your shoe department associate measure your foot and make sure your heel fits the boot correctly. Some of their boots have a wide heel counter/shelf. I was fitted improperly and my upland boots caused a muscle tear in my heel. Red Wing sewed a couple layers into my boot and never had an issue again. Great boots. Love my Danners as well.
Yes for sure something learned. I like the markers setup and task placed ahead for a field run. With some good planning I will be setting up a course, like what you just walked. I just bought 7 new compass for my Niece and Nephews after watching your first video in this series, for Christmas. In the Spring I will be setting up a course and running it with the kids. Lots of FUN ahead, Thanks Shawn.
Daniel Charbonneau,That is great you are teaching them something other than smartphone thumb punching ! What compass did you buy ? I copied the model he used and goggled it and came up with the same compass and several with more letters behind that, all a little different ??
This is all new to me and I have learned a lot between the first video and now this one. I am going to set up a little course like this to take and practice and teach my son. Maybe I'll teach some of my friends kids too.
Love the tagged tree idea. I'm going to set one up for my nephew. He's joined the Cubs now so it's time for navigation with Uncle G. Thanks for the video.
I realise this video was made a few years ago. I watched it then & I'm watching it now. Very good stuff. One thing kept scratching at the back of my mind/memory that I couldn't place. I've got it now. You have a definite Jim Belushi vibe & tone of voice @ 3:30 min. Almost a John Belushi Blues Brothers vibe (especially with the shades) but absolutely a Jim Belushi vibe which is better because he's a little taller, slenderer, fitter, better looking than his older brother & still alive. ; ) Carry on mate. Been following you for several years & find myself rewatching many of your videos. Lots of knowledge & experience here for the taking for those willing to learn. Cheers from Canada.
Thank you for the video and your explanations. May this quote cheer thou up: Zeus: "Are you aiming for these people?" John McClane: "No. Well, maybe that mime."
Shawn, thank you so much for the effort you put into all your videos especially this one. I really appreciate your teaching skills sir. And a very big thank you for your service for this great country.
Nice boots & Great video....!! Dead reckoning courses are challenging and fun....and bring out the compass/pace skills. Can't wait for you to break out the map and use terrain association and handrails....
Showing land navigation in practice was a learning experience even though I was just watching. Along with your 2 previous vids it brings it all together. Also I have been wearing Red Wing and Irish Setter boots and shoes for years. Good quality product. They are good to go..........
Outstanding video!!! Excellent demonstration of skills from your previous videos. I learn so much from these videos. I also ordered those boots!! Outstanding work sir.
Thanks for the video. I would like to see something similar, but demonstrating some real life hiking situations of navigating deep ravines, etc., using the offset and reset(?) methods to return to your bearing. Thanks again.
That was really the coolest video you’ve ever done. I only say that because, I remember that course from basic class. I’ve been practicing self mapping. Land Navigation is by no means easy but, I’m getting better at it.
Nice video on land navigation; not always a clearly presented subject. Also, depending on how rough/muddy the land, Indian moccasins cant be beat for not giving you blisters etc.. I have easily done 8 miles on a sand beach, and they are the only footwear that adapts to everything comfortably with no band-aids required, both wet and dry.
Excellent video. It seems you’ve got to be ok doing a lot of bushwhacking to walk an azimuth. Can you do a vid on using a compass to help stay on the correct trail, for example in a national park or forest with multiple trails intersecting or veering off or that aren’t well marked? Thank you.
I just wanted to say ty for all these videos , with the recent direct hit by hurricane Michael on my home my family , my mom's family and grandma's family had to use a few skills taught by you on your videos, we have just got cell phone service on here but still no power, but even tho all three of our houses are destroyed or totaled we are alive ,ty for the skills I have learned from your videos. P.S. the beef stew MRE rocks ! Oh and you can watch the last moments of the house on my channel ty again and can't wait for the next video!
So helpful, thank you! Clarifying question from this beginner: Just to be clear, after you enter the azimuth via the bezel, before walking you move Red to the Shed, right?

Hi Corporal Kelly hope you and you're family are doing good I finally get to watch this one keep the video's coming 👍👍👍♘ thank you Corporal Kelly great video ♘ 👍👍👍C😎😎L
Corporals Corner hey love the video; I’m a bit late but I was wondering what that two piece axe is in the video, and where I can get it.
First video of MANY that explained what a waypoint is in short detail outside of just using the word.

Yes! I was so hoping you would take theory out to the field to show us how it's done. •You• are outstanding!
Good stuff, I am happy you're doing this series. I think LandNAV is a lost art and needs to be resurrected in our community.
The Corporal is The King of KISS. Love your vids.
This channel has just become one of my top educational resources.
This is the only video I have seen that is an actual demonstration of how to do it... OUTSTANDING!
Please share it with others and thanks for watching
Seeing what you taught put into action put it in perspective for me.
Thanks
OMG.. I love you! Thank you for showing it "simplified". Outstanding AF.💯💥
I loved the musical interlude almost as much as the landnav content. Thank you for continuing this series; it’s been very educational and inspiring.
The way you explain things is so easy to understand... landnav made easy ty sir.
Thanks Marine. Very clear, well done instructional videos. Hoowaaa!
Excellent vid. I have some red wing irish setters i got a few years ago. They are amazing boots. Very well made. Other than a lil patina on the leather, they look new after many, many klicks.
The easiest to understand explanations on basic land nav that I've ever seen. Thank you so much :)
Outstanding! Survival skills people don't know today.
Easy video on working with a compass. Love it! Big AL
I've enjoyed your videos on map reading and compass skills that I've bought them. I've never done any of this before so I thank you for getting me interested in exploring the outdoors. Keep up the excellent work as I'm sure its valued by many, including me!
Very good sir. Thanks for sharing. Clear and concise teaching
Hey, just wanted to say "thank you" for this series. I worked my way through them today and I feel like I learned a great deal in a short amount of time. Will be revisiting them from time to time.
THANX Cpl. K. Your land navs. Are great, always learn something!!
Excellent demonstration, and this helped with a couple points of your back to the existing destination point to line to next target location.
I know many folks who swear by red wing boots so its no surprise to hear you like em. Great tips on staying at the actual point and checking for next bearing.
Once again cpl. Kelly
OUTSTANDING!
Thank you for the navigational videos !
Yet another outstanding video. Great info. Great practice. Thanks

Love my Irish Setter work boots. On my 3rd pair, I’ve resoled each pair twice. They last and last and I wear them most days for 15 hours. The only other shoes I own are flip flops and snow boots.
Again exceptionally well taught Navigation basics. Thank you for making it so easy to understand and learn.

Great video. Realized I’ve made the mistake of not shooting my next azimuth with my back to the tag/point. Always learn something from CC videos.
I’ll be at the Basic Class Oct 8th. I’ve been binge watching your videos to prepare.
This is all new to me and I have learned a lot between the first video and now this one. I am going to set up a little course like this to take and practice and teach my son. Maybe I'll teach some of my friends kids too.

Will have to check out those boots...you know I need a new pair...great review of the navigation course
Good call on throwing in that reminder to use waypoints, that is something that gets overlooked often and its such a simple thing.
Thanks man I figured it was better than just tossing your pack in the weeds.......
I don't know how to laugh on RUclips, but I am.
I need to practice that !!! Outstanding AF.....
Waypoint video next then. Wealth of knowledge and it is appreciated. Thank you for the work you put in.
Fantastic watched 3 times. Please keep 'em coming. Thanks
Thank you for the video and your explanations. May this quote cheer thou up: Zeus: "Are you aiming for these people?" John McClane: "No. Well, maybe that mime."

As usual, well done, Corporal! Clearly presented and demonstrated.
Outstanding, Corporal! Nicely done! Very interested in those boots! Red Wing has always been a good manufacturer.
I used the Silva 123 method of map reading in Ranger school. I came in first in land Nav
Thanks for the video.
I would like to see something similar, but demonstrating some real life hiking situations of navigating deep ravines, etc., using the offset and reset(?) methods to return to your bearing. Thanks again.
Good easy to understand videos. Just getting interested in land navigation with a compass.

Great video. Like the fact that you used a boot and did a review. Not one of the bigger named boot designers either.
Excellent Excellent video as always

Very good. Thank you very much
