You have outdone yourself with THIS painting! I'm in love with the pose, the chiaroscuro lighting and of course your painting. Man, I wish I could find an artist friend like you near me to paint with, hang with and share ideas with! I could learn so much from you, Mr. Vic. You are such an inspiration for me!
Paul Noel That takes extreme skill. His soul is reflected on how he captures each detail with such delicate care and intricate precision. Don't tell me that a musician that interprets Bach in such a way has no soul.
@@paulnoel7196 maybe he is painting someone dear to him, like a his son for example, so his eyes will go over and recognise every part of his face. i don't thing that is soulless, unless you are looking for style and stuff and that's art with a different idiosyncratic aesthetic dimension, and maybe he is not interested in that , he just want to meditate on something beautiful to his eyes and soul.
Wow. I love this hyperrealistic type of feel in paintings and I am so glad your video popped up in my recommended videos because I watch A LOT of speed painting and this one is absolutely and utterly amazing and very inspiring. I'm sure your son feels special to have you spend such a long time creating a piece surrounded by him. Absolutely breathtaking. Subscribed for sure. Can't wait to see/watch more =)
you had captured the feeling of the model. it looks like a very hard work to do. skin tones are very challenging. ohhhh....there are too many colors put down in different areas....we are the observers of shapes, tones n colors.
+vic harris I love how i am never satisfied with my work. but i am ok that i am always getting better. we never stop seeing more. One day, I will put my ideas and emotions freely in my canvases when i fully opened up with my mind.
Wow. Praise from THE Rick Baker. Your portraits are amazing, Mr. Harris. Keep up the good work! I'm especially fascinated by the Gisaille method you use. I'm terrible with black and grey painting, but can paint wet-in-wet. This method seems to simplify the rigors of trying to capture perfect values. Thanks for sharing!
vic this is so amazing I wish I could paint like that, I'm teaching myself to paint and can't imagine I will ever be this good. Have you any videos where you do this step by step ? You are an inspiration enjoyed the videos thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot. No I don't have a step by step video yet, mainly because I'm an amateur, and with the colour layers I'm a bit haphazard, constantly modifying the colour and tone - it would either drive the viewers mad or bore them to death. On the next video I may add optional subtitles with an indication of the colours used
I hope to master portrait painting like you one day... my stuff looks so... sketchy... I find it hard to get my stuff to look realistic. well.. inspiring to see someone like you paint, thanks for sharing

For oil it depends on the medium. If you use Liquin then it is dry within a day. I use W&N Painting Medium which takes maybe two days, if I don't mix a lot of it with the paint. Some paints such as burnt umber dry quicker
I can't believe you call yourself amateur. I wonder what wonders would you do if you were a professional ( which I think you already are). I really love the emotions you put into your paintings. Although colour is important I have realised that the secret to a good painting is correct tones. The brain is not good at judging the tone of colour so it helps to establish the tone in a monochrome underpainting first and worry about the colour later. Also saves on paint!
Is there a risk of scraping paint off previously laid down layers thus destroying them? And could you also use drybrushing instead of glazing in later stages if you feel about correcting forms in the laters stages? Various glaze layers must be possible
Hi. No there is no risk, but only if you follow the principle of 'fat over lean' ie more and more oil in the mix. Basically each successive layer must be slower drying than the one before, which is why you can paint oil over acrylic but not the other way round. Because oil takes so long to dry completely, if the layer above dries first the volatile substances in the layer below will peel the one above. For glazing, the one below should be dry to the touch and therefore isn't dissolved and ruined by the one above. So I guess dry brushing may not work
vic harris okay. Thankyou. Would it be easier to work out the small details like the pores under the zygomatic bone left and the subtle shade left from the nose in a grisaille underpainting or could you also work in those details via glazes in the later stages? In gouache: Getting those turning of the forms right is harder since the transparency of the paint is harder to control. Sometimes underlayers show through and you scrap them off if you work on the later layers
Hi. Thanks. Black (or grey) is blue when placed next to flesh colours. Before a blue pigment became widely available, the old masters used black as a blue substitute
oh man.. it's so realistic! it's a genuine talent! if you don't mind.. May I ask what kinds of tone of colors do you actually often used for skin tone? and I love to learn that techniques. thanks!
Cheers. Difficult to answer because I wing it. My palette for this was white, yellow ochre, sap green, viridian, ult blue, violet, alizarin crimson, cad red, brnt siena, burnt umber, black
Very nice time lapse... I'm curios what role do the bands of string or elastic that you wrap around play. I'm familiar with grinding techniques but I haven't seen this done before. Thanks
Hi thanks. They allow me to locate particular squares on the grid after it has been covered by paint. It's surprising how much one can drift off the original gridded drawing (well - I do). Cos so many people have asked about my method I did this video on my channel ruclips.net/video/XpBl3xGO0Ho/видео.html
I may be a little late to the party but if you don’t ask....my question is how long between the underpaint and the colour glaze, also do you lose anything by painting over monochrome rather than painting in direct colour?
If you use Liquin and fast drying underpainting white then you only have to wait a day or two before it is dry enough to paint over. The only downside is there is some loss of brightness to the colours because all oil paint is a little transparent.

Allthough you are a skillful painter and this painting is beautiful there's no life in it, none that I can see.

What is the idea behind to paint black and white 1st???
Secret to a good painting is accurate tones. It's easier to do this in a monochrome underpainting first
looks like Caravaggio painted it. amazing work. Did the Varoque painters all use the black and white underpainting technique?
+BlayzedBlue Hi. Thanks. I don't know if all did, but most employed a grisaille and glazing
