Awesome hike! I would love to have a beautiful woods to explore! There is probably many areas that will be perfect for building out your amazing campgrounds! Love ya, Fran
Thank you so much for watching!! We are so excited about all the places for my family to build on this island. The trees are always an issue but we'll figure it all out. We are so grateful! Each day we thank God for His blessings! 💚
Ryan, when hiking in "wild " woods, yes like you suggested you should wear gloves but also carry a machete to help clear the way. Also if i was you, i would be carrying a handheld radio (like a GMRS). They will not be perfect with your terrain but will help if needed to contact one or the other
We have tried our Motorola radios without much luck, but they might not be powerful enough. We have been struggling with how to keep in touch with each other while we each do our thing on the island. We are super careful while off on our own, and so far we've been lucky we haven't had any emergencies... Yes, we need a solution. Thank you for watching and a big THANK YOU for your comments! -Ryan.
@@mywildholm I was not sure if a GMRS radio would work because of the terrain since their radio waves are "line of site". I remember reading where remote "off grid" in the Yukon used CB radios (AM wave length), handheld for hikes and a base station for their cabin. This also gave them emergency communications with the "outside world". Wishing you bith the best and stay safe
Oh that's interesting. It makes sense too... we aren't always 'line of site' for sure. I guess we could use the drone for now to drop a note or something... 😜
❤Great video!! Ryan, if it turns out there are edible mushrooms Melodi could make some killer omelettes on her LG! If you have spinach to add to it…even better. Loved it when you got off the boat and made your way to the clearing! That was awesome. Almost like someone had gone before you and given you a head start. I was thinking it would be a great place for a cabin and then shortly after you said the same thing. Would be good for when your family visits or if the time comes you want to do a business from there you could make that cabin something like an place to rent for those who like being out in the solitude. It would be a great place for planting a garden as well. Endless possibilities for someone who is willing to work very hard and has a vision. The beautiful view at the end where you finally saw your boat was breathtaking. You two are amazing and I’m so thankful 🙏🏻 I found you from the Ozark channel. Take care of yourselves. Ryan, always take your gloves. When you are in the thick of the brush, it would be a good idea to carry a big knife…something like a machete to help clear a path or to chop up those 🎵spiders and snakes cause that is what it takes to bite you! 🎵😂 ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
That was a lovely comment! We agree with each and every point too. There are so many spots on this island that family can build. We do want to build a road eventually... there is just so much to be done. Time is all we need 😆 and lots of rest 💤
(from Shawn) That was a really neat tour of your island. Having the drone to do recon is a great idea and provides a safe method of determining possible dangers prior to any boots on the ground. Over time, you need to work on paths to move vehicles around if needed.
For sure... trails are on our "todo" list. So many things have to be done to make our homestead liveable as we are starting from scratch. It is a exciting prospect actually... Always great to hear from you and thanks so much for dropping by! -Ryan
Hello Karen! It's nice to hear from you. After cooking over the camp fire, it was a big deal for us to get a propane stove - but it's get even better soon 🌟 Thank you for watching!
Well you'll never have to worry about firewood. We only ever used dead standing as once there down they usually starting to rot and full of bugs. But thats not to say a lot of it wouldn't still make good fire wood. It would be a long-term project but you could punch a road into that natural swamp meadow. But like you said, I wouldn't take the machine into it. Maybe late in the summer. It looks like a great spot to put a garden or clear out the trees and grow a small plot of hay. The area where I worked on the cattle ranch was pretty much all started by the homesteaders harvesting the swamp meadows. We had some of the natural ones left that were easily 10 or 15 acres. They didn't have equipment or even a tractor back in the day just horses and wagons so they had to do what was easiest. But that's a nice protected area with lots of sun. You could punch in the road and get Melodi a golf cart to drive to it. That would be neat to see her in a golf cart with her dog heading for the meadow. 😂😂
Yes, that is a terrific visual and would be awesome to have that built out. I think I would need a forestry mulcher for that... not sure I can find a good used one, but I am looking. Thanks again for your commentary. -Ryan
Welcome to our channel! That's exactly how we feel! It seems like they are so many resources here to be able to sustain ourselves 💚 lots of work, but it'll be worth it!
Wow, what an amazing tour. But you are very brave to walk through the woods like that. Are there any animals on the island? Thanks for taking us along with you.
So far we have only seen a variety of birds, plus beavers, muskrats, squirrels (Opal's favorite!). We have seen moose hoof prints leading to a nest, so they do come onto the island to birth. So nothing dangerous so far! We have a game camera and I'll try to remember to set it up again. All in all we feel remarkably safe on the island. Thank you for your concern! -Ryan

Planning on selling and moving asap tho once I finish fixing this house up to sell! Hoping to have more acres & on the ocean instead of down the road from the ocean & build a house (with nothing wrong with it lol) so we shall see how that works out !
Hey ryan just found you channel. Your living my dream! That large clearing would be awesome to clear out for a garden or a nice place to land an emergency helicopter if ever needed with a few trails coming from your cabin. Every min counts when needed
Yes, every minute does count for sure... For the winter season it would be a great L-Z. From late spring thru the fall, the lower lake depth reveals additional acres of "bonus beach" that can easily serve as an emergency landing / egress area. Thanks so much for the concern and thank you for watching! -Ryan.
Yes, Melodi is looking for a good one now. Do you know of one that is reliable? We sure wouldn't want to rely on an app that is not accurate! Thank you for watching. -Ryan.
@@mywildholm When I lived in Norway we always went to pick chanterelles. blueberries. With a guide. If living in a larger city and. taking a train there would be a mushroom inspector at the return of the train. I’m pretty sure that Canada has a system of some sort - recognizing that you don’t have a train!!! 😎
man that island would be awsome to have a bunch of trails for a 4wheeler or something and you could use them to drag back logs that are good for building your cabin.
That is a neat open area you explored. You may need to get some timber men to come help you clear out some trees and roadway to that area. Looks too dangerous to do by yourself
It's definitely the safest thing to do. Falling (felling) trees is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced... wisdom is needed in all of this. Careful planning has to happen... stay tuned 💚
Oh would Melodi have fun in there I can just see her now. You know the shortest distance from point A to point B is the ridge trail. Just about 1/3 to 1/2 your distance. Real pretty thank you for sharing
Oh you bet! It's not all that easy to maneuver because of the downed trees. We really look forward to clearing bush and making trails safely so we can traverse the island one day. We want to set up trail cams at every intersection too.
I don't know if you have seen our livestreams where we talk about the sawmill that we have now. We haven't brought it to the island yet, but as soon as we have a shelter for it, we will bring it and start using the lumber that was cut down and just see if we can use any of the other... if, as you say, it isn't rotten. Thank you for watching! 🌲
Awesome video clip. Really enjoyed the trip thru the woods. So much potential in what you filmed. Two things jumped out at me while watching: You should never have to drop another tree to provide fire wood with all the dead fall and I would be hesitant to jump into the type of overgrowth as you did in my neck of the woods (southern USA) due to the likely hood of snakes which I have to assume are not prevalent where you are.
Welcome to our channel! Thank you for your comments. It's always nice to hear from our subscribers! You are correct! We really never would need to drop another tree for firewood. We don't have any snakes up here. There may be very small harmless garter snakes somewhere in BC but we've never seen any at all on our island. Oh my, yes... you have some scary ones in the South there. I understand why you'd be concerned 🫨
Rhyan if you put a kotch in it and raise the bucket up as high as you can and put the bucket against the tree and put pressure on it then cut the back and it would start to go away from the cabin then push it and it will fal lo twards the lake i have done that a lot
Yes, that works quite well and is super fast. I like pushing the whole tree over so that the roots come up, but when that is not possible, your idea is golden. It just means that I will have a stump to contend with, but it's not a huge deal, really. I'll look to get a piece of equipment to deal with those pesky stumps. Thanks so much for watching! -Ryan.
I see all that deadfall and think firewood, definitely won’t run out of firewood for awhile. I know there is a fire ban because of the forest fires, but I would take this chance to start stocking up on firewood….at least get a head start on the winters supply
@@mywildholm - no problem, I enjoy watching channels like this cause it gives me a chance to learn what to do or not to do for when I can afford my own place. Hopefully near my parents place since they are in their seventies, so I want to be close by if they ever need assistance. If they have passed away before I can afford my own place, then I have my eye on a couple other properties that may suit my needs.
I thought about that, I would first need to see what happens during spring melt to be sure of what I am dealing with there... Thank you for the suggestion! -Ryan
Stone section with heating mats underneath and on top constant water though to be doubly sure go for wind water and solar power that way you have redundancies in power generation that way your not reliant on solar
So you don't have to worry about snow build up on solar panels and auger drill bit could act as an hydro plantyou can attach a auger drill bit to a carburetor to generate power
NOTE TO RYAN. Always carry a chainsaw when exploring. (Even if its just that little handheld one) You can cut your way TO where you're exploring, and have a clear path back. (Kinda like Hansel and Gretal leaving bread crumbs).
I was wondering if you ate eggs, since you said you only eat fish on that live. You should definitely get some chickens. Not only will they give you eggs, but they'll eat ticks and other bugs. Also when they stop laying eggs (when they're too old you can cook them up for Opal, plus she'll love raw eggs)
We would love to have chickens. My youngest daughter and her husband have just finished building their coop and I think it would be great to have them. Ryan eats eggs, I do but very rarely asks nor for cooking. It would be a great resource for us to have though. Thank you for your comments 💚
We still have epispdes from season two to release and we are currently filming seaon three. We really appreciate you watching. Stay tuned... lots more to come! -Ryan
Make a road to that clearing you have a nice garden, some carrots, potatoes, onions, turnips, kale, cabbages, only thing is??? Do you have deer or moose, they WILL EAT IT
That's where the Aliens land .. Not to be a pain but if it was my island I'd be jumpin on the skider an start cutting a nice little 4wheeler walking trail all the way around the whole island
Hello there! Welcome to our channel from Germany, Sonja! That is a really good question. So far, I have not found anything growing from a garden on the island. I'm sure they must have had a garden somewhere but it was so many years ago - perhaps it just didn't survive. Much more to come 💚
You really need to have a lumber company come. In. And thin that forest, it is not thriving It's choking itself out, You can make a lot of money , selling your lumper to a lumber company.
As there are no animals, grazers or predators, on your island why don't you ask the local wildlife authorities if they would be able to supply a small seed herd of does with a buck? In my mind that would go with the ethos of the island.
hey guys love your Island have you ever thought of bringing in a environmental logger these are the guys that come in and what they do is face thin out your Timber cuz right now by looking at your video you have a lot of really nice Old Timber but it's so close together and it keeps a lot of light out and if you brought somebody in that would give you a plan to go through like every quarter of the property or an eighth of the property every year and then out your Timber is here and I'm sure there's enough really good Lumber in there you can make some good money along with all the blown down Lumber that is still good for something like firewood and other building materials that you can mail on your property and the thing that can also do is help you put in a good path around your Island and through the island so you can get any part of that Island it's just thought
Yes! Excellent suggestions!! I have not heard of an environmental logger before and I am super interested in learning more about it. This is the answer I have been waiting for. Thank you so much for watching. -Ryan.
@@mywildholm there are lumber companies in British Columbia that do not do clear cuts they only select cut timber trying to open up the bottom of the forest so more diversity can grow and that's a wonderful thing
Absolutely! That is our hope and in no way do we ever want to clear it all right off the map... it's hard enough on me to take one down... we want to be responsible and wise with it all. Thank you for watching! 🌲- Melodi
We have found another way actually. And that was only because of the wind. And we never left the stove unattended. But nevertheless, point taken. We moved the stove and it no longer requires any wind protection. Thank you for your concern and support! -Ryan.
Y’all are making me nervous! Ryan just hire somebody that does trees. it’s too sketchy that you would be on a ladder tied to tree that could go down, which obviously would take the ladder and you down! It’s not worth it
Hey there Jayne ☺ you and I are kindred spirits ☀ Ryan had a pretty serious accident a while ago on a ladder... It really can happen. I like him to avoid this kind of thing whenever possible. Stay tuned 💚

-Ryan.
Man you guys could beautiful place to put another cabin place to plant a garden
Oh yes we agree!
I see all that deadfall and think firewood, definitely won’t run out of firewood for awhile.
I know there is a fire ban because of the forest fires, but I would take this chance to start stocking up on firewood….at least get a head start on the winters supply
You bet... We're on it! Thank you for your concern and support, and thank you for watching! -Ryan.
You need to start a burn pile close to the water and make a fire hose and start clearing the land cheap and easy.
You give great advice! That's exactly what we do in the Fall... leaves 🍂
you could possibly put a green house slash farm in the clearing just dig a ditch round it for drainage
I thought about that, I would first need to see what happens during spring melt to be sure of what I am dealing with there... Thank you for the suggestion! -Ryan
Also with trench and water filter / purifier clean water and power if you build a hydro plant take care of snow build up during winter
😆 Taking a saw is definitely the smart thing to do! We tied up ribbons the very first time we ever went into the forest. A saw is even better 💚
Hi guys when will season 3 start plz can't wait
We still have epispdes from season two to release and we are currently filming seaon three. We really appreciate you watching. Stay tuned... lots more to come! -Ryan
It looks like a hurricane went through there
Oh yes! Those winds are fierce and the trees just come down - we never go into the woods during any kind of wind storm at all.
Look for a good deal of rocks to make a dock 😮
Welcome to our channel! Thank you for watching. That's definitely a thought too! 💚
Love to chat one one with you guys.
I would have to say there is no chance that tree is tall enough to hit the cabin. I say let it rip! Lots of room to spare.
I don't know about that... it's a pretty tall tree... stay tuned. We've got updates coming 🌲
Make a road to that clearing you have a nice garden, some carrots, potatoes, onions, turnips, kale, cabbages, only thing is??? Do you have deer or moose, they WILL EAT IT
Oh we have something really nice that you'll be able to see soon. We don't have deer but apparently there have been moose in the island in the past 🫎
That's where the Aliens land ..
Not to be a pain but if it was my island I'd be jumpin on the skider an start cutting a nice little 4wheeler walking trail all the way around the whole island
Oh you're not a pain at all. We love hearing from subscribers. We've definitely got plans... sooo so many plans 💚
Check for tices
We sure do! 😃
Think it would be nice for U to invest in a woodmizer lt40 , then U can mill all that fallen trees, would give U lots of lumber, 2x4 s and 2 x 6
We actually have a sawmill - a Norwood HD36V2. It is pretty robust and will do the job for us. We just need a place to put it! -Ryan
Is that clearing where they cut the logs from, for that cabin that is rotting away?
Thank you soo much. We will need them for sure - thank you for your kindness and concern. 💚
@@mywildholm I know Ryan can't do it, but that little excavator could pull a lot of those logs out so you can clear areas and make a road
I wonder if that is a big?
I think your comment went early - I wanted to answer your question though. 🌞
Found an app “Mushroom Identifier by Photographs” on internet - looks pretty solid.
I also found one and it's really a great help - also a plant identifier which is wonderful!
Is this in B.C. ?
Yes it is, northern BC. Thanks for watching! -Ryan
Die you find any plants like vegetables for fruits that survived/ became wild from the former owners? Anything you could harvest or cultivate for you?
Greetings from Germany
Hello there! Welcome to our channel from Germany, Sonja! That is a really good question. So far, I have not found anything growing from a garden on the island. I'm sure they must have had a garden somewhere but it was so many years ago - perhaps it just didn't survive. Much more to come 💚
Ryan get some game 🎮 to find out what is animals
You really need to have a lumber company come. In. And thin that forest, it is not thriving It's choking itself out, You can make a lot of money , selling your lumper to a lumber company.
Welcome to our channel! We have so much to do! There is lots to come and we cannot wait to share it with you all 💚
Yes it is totally choked which is why they are thin and leggy. They need thinning out and areas replanting
Yes, Id like to have a specialized forestry compnay come in and do some rehab work. -Ryan
🌲- Melodi
Cardboard and open flame = island on fire. Please find another way.
Stay tuned 💚
get some cows in there
Perhaps some day 🐄 There is so much potential 💚
Atv trail
Welcome to our channel! Yes definitely an ATV is in order! 💚
HELLO. HAVE YOU SEEN THE CHANNELS I RECOMMENDED ON FACEBOOK, WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?
Hey there! We haven't had time to look yet, we'll do it in the next few days. We fall into bed every night and wake early to work on the island. Thank you for asking.
