Absolutely !!! :) I read "Less than zero", "The Rules of Attraction", "Imperial Bedrooms", and I LOVE them, but "American Psycho" is such a masterpiece, it is one of the most important novels of the end of the 20th century !!! :) I'm french but I can read english fluently and I had to read it in english because the french translation really sucks... Of course, the most violent chapters are not an easy read (soooo horrific) but the satire is sooo brilliant, and I admire the constant genius and dark humor of the dialogue, page after page, until the end... I will say it again : a masterpiece of modern literature that will stand the test of time :)

You can't write a book like that and be a completely sane person. But speaking as a writer (though nowhere near as prolific as this guy), you almost have to be, because you're immersing yourself in a character. In a sense, you become a character that may not be you normally but you have to take on those traits to write a believable story.

I posit that such dark characters imagined by relatively sane authors reflect a combination of creativity and inner madness checked in place

you would think a novelist who wrote about the yuppie, materialistic culture of the 1980s, would be against the guy who most symbolizes that culture

"Making literature" requires full freedom of speech- something that this man rallies for in "White." It would behoove you to catch up on this as a (presumably) educated person.
