Great video, Dweeb -- one other fun fact is that you can even use your WINDOWS Steam microSD card with Bazzite. SteamOS will mount exFAT, and it will recognized the files on the card, and then install a few additional files to make them compatible, and that's it. So for me, I have a dual-boot Bazzite setup, and I can use the same card on both OS interfaces and play the same games. That's probably my favorite feature so far.

This is kind of crazy when I stop for a moment and think about it. Not long ago, your only option was Windows if you wanted to game on your PC, and only linux experts and fanatics sticked to gaming on linux. Then Windows "evolved" to be the universal operating system that can run on everything and do anything.. But I guess this was a little bit too greedy intention and didn't work out at the end. Meanwhile Valve managed to create and provide a better user experience and performance with Steam OS on the Deck and talented people can now port this experience and performance to other devices as well. With that, linux became the preferred option on handheld and gaming PCs. This is mind blowing for me.

This is great and makes the Windows handhelds a lot more attractive. My main gripe with these systems is also the OS. Windows is not pleasant to use on a 7-8" touchscreen. I opted for an OLED SteamDeck because I wanted a handheld gaming console and Steam OS is great for that. Here in Australia Steam is not officially supported so I had to pay about $800USD for the SteamDeck which made the price difference with the Windows handhelds negligible.
I also like the idea of having a completely different OS on a removable MicroSD card. I use my SteamDeck like a normal person but also I have a MicroSD card with Batocera on it and a whole bunch of lightgun games. I connect my SteamDeck to my TV using a dock, plug my Sinden Lightgun into the dock and boot from the MicroSD card. I now have a super simple home light gun setup that takes up ZERO space on my SteamDeck. You might want to have a look at this as a video idea. Batocera V39 has native support for the Sinden Lightgun and OLED SteamDeck.

Using Windows with touch on an Ally is overall fine, at least about as fine as it would be using Steam with Steam games on a Deck. And plenty of common touch things like web browsing, email, video, music work well with touch. However, there is a lot of old battleship grey legacy UI in Windows that isn't at all touch friendly, but you see can see that too even on a Steam Deck as those old Windows UI elements pop up from these Windows games.

Oh, and you get btrfs with data deduplication. No more wasted disk space because of hundreds of identical files of the compatibility layers in every game folder.

I have been using Bazzite for a while now. I first tested it on my Gaming desktop PC, then put it on my LCD Steam Deck. After it added support to the OLED Steam Deck, I put it on that one as well.
I was running Aurora on my new IdeaPad tablet, but I was thinking of switching that to Bazzite as well (although not the Deck version, as I don't want it to boot directly into Game mode).
I do recommend enrolling the MOK and keeping Secure Boot enabled, as it does help with security. If you do choose to encrypt the install using LUKS, there is a ujust command to enroll the decryption phrase into the TPM; allows you to use disk encryption without having to type the passphrase in every boot. Just don't forget the passphrase, just in case you have to type it in again later.

I'll ask the questions I never seem to have time to answer myself: why choose Bazzite over HoloISO or Chimera? Are you considering a video on that subject maybe? Also, have you thought about running Bazzite from a portable hard drive? I know Batocera runs really well like that, but it is much lighter. Linux is a portable OS in most cases, so there are some interesting opportunities. Or maybe it's just me.

Hello I don't own a handheld but I use Bazzite on my Desktop PC, only OS for a year and half. Bazzite upgrades are much more frequent than SteamOS in fact Bazzite system components are much more current than SteamOS that is why it's compatible with the ROG Ally X already. Upgrade downloads happen in the background when the device is idle and when you restart you automatically enter the newer version of Bazzite. (no installing/applying upgrade bullshit loading screen, it's a normal restart). Hope this helps.
EDIT: I actually didn't answer your question, the layer people call SteamOS is actually called Steam Big Picture Mode which is part of Steam itself it's just an application that gets updated as soon as Valve releases the update for Linux in general.

Battery is now even better. Linux is not that power costly like windows.
Also, now you have a better hibernate system, which basically will help you save a lot of battery just with the power button.
I think the important thing here is performance, my main concern if I am going to have the same performance as I have in Windows. Having this will make us depend on the open source project and third-party guys supporting the ally since Asus will deliver updates but only for Windows.

I felt the cold chills in my back as your machine didn't boot at all... 🥶 Now, with the Bazzite option, any handheld pc became a competitor of the Steam Deck. And, yup, Linux is the future of the video games. Windows is now a crap bloatware with tons of useless stuff... I don't know if MS will release a "lite" Windows for handhelp pc, if they have that in mind of course. Now, the second step, is to wait and see if the prices will drop enough to catch the Steam Deck ROI grounds...

I mean they literally released a replacement for the old Ally in a year, and they have been giving people nightmares with honoring their warranty. I guess the question is, is the higher performance worth worrying about if and when the device fails what will happen? I would love to buy this device, it's everything I want in a handheld, but I will not take that step because Asus is not trustworthy as a company.
