If you can't be bothered to stay on the trail and keep your back facing away from the water, there's no place in that box on your neck for any of this useful information. If you are near a coast not drinking sea water, you could watch for gulls or maybe, the sun. Great advice when you can. If you are truly in a survival situation, drink what you have to drink then get checked out when you are back in civilization. Certainly don't die of dehydration trying to start a fire to boil (not that you are saying that).
I was out in california visiting my dads side of the family one time when I was like 13 or so. My dad and I went down to the ventura beach to relax and go swimming. I remember going out into the water and going a little bit deeper than i should've and having my dad come and join me. Shortly after my dad said we needed to get closer to shore, so we started swimming only to very shortly realize we weren't getting any closer. I had never heard of rip currents/rip tides before that day. I was panicking and my dad told me to swim sideways, i was able to make it out of the rip and swim to shore, but my dad not so much. I ran to the lifeguard tower and asked the person sitting in it to help, only to find out it was just a random person sitting in the tower, there were no lifeguards that day. I thought for sure that day that my dad was going to drown, luckily as he was floating on his back, a surfer just happened to be going by him, he told my dad to grab onto his board and they swam back to shore. Ive got to say, that was probably the most terrifying experience in my life. Rips are no joke
Great video. Only one thing, coconut water (13:05) can help a little in a survival situation however it is a diuretic. So if you drink too much coconut water could lead to dehydration rather than help, as it increases urination. It's also high in potassium and sudden and sever levels of potassium can be life threatening or make you very ill in the best case senario.
don't go for the eyes when faced with a shark - they will cover it with a protective skin that decreases their sight, making them more likely to bite... stay calm, keep your eyes at all times on the shark, and push some water against their gills to let them know that you know about their weak point. That's usually enough.
"Sharks have a protective eyelid-like barrier called a nictitating membrane, but it’s designed to protect from a thrashing fish caught in that shark’s jaws and not from fingers." DR. DAVID SHIFFMAN / MARINE CONSERVATION BIOLOGIST
@@DebunkedOfficial Depending on the shark it might hunt prey like seals or crustaceans which do possess finger-like limbs or at least sharp teeth that could damage the eyes, so do not underestimate the strength of the nictitating membrane ;) But I agree the eyes are sensitive - yet temporarily blinding an apex predator and risking to be further explored with its jaws is not... optimal.

I've been free diving and spear fishing for years and I can say I have had many shark encounters staying calm and keeping your eyes on the shark is solid advice as the shark is going to be be looking at you in your eyes whole time u need to maintain eye contact it does work 95 % of the time just hope the sharks not in a bad mood but also you never want to try and swim away from a shark it will think your afraid of it and that's not good it will try to attack you cause that's how it's food behave, so definitely you should Stand your ground always and never let the shark see you before you see it always be aware of your surroundings keeping updating it ever 2 seconds but one time I remember I was a mile offshore me and friend mind you we don't have a boat so we just swim out to sea but we dive far apart from each other almost like solo diving basically... I was attacked by a hungry bull shark I was shooting some squids when I just saw a black shadow floating up out of the blue depts below me.... we like to dive on what we call the edge that's where the bottom of the sea drops off into the depts like the edge of the sea bottom where u can no longer see the sea floor just dark blue on one side the other side is the edge I had alot of fish that I had shot as we were in the water form in the morning about 6am till it was almost mid day I had so many big fish on my strings plus lobsters and squids even few octopus It was two long strings full of all kinds a fish that I was swimming with and broo brooo I think it definitely wanted some of them... It just attacked me on sight almost I was using the spear gun to jab at it but it just kept circling me and coming at me each time trying to bite me I saw it closed it's eyes as it try to take a bite it was about 10 feet long and really bulky I was starting to panic as it kept circling me every time I would jab at it like it would swim way then change direction and come back at me again one of the time I jab at it with the spear gun I held up my head and saw my friend a good distance away from me I yeld shark!!!! So he started to swim towards me but he was so far he told me I should hit the to of the water as hard as I can with my hands to make a loud explosion sound I did it while the shark was swimming towards me while swimming towards it like it got scared cause I was charging back at it but the loud explosion sound when u slightly curve ur palm and hit the top of the water as hard as you can really scared the shark my friend was getting closer and he was doing it too I can tell you for a fact it really works to scare the shark it along with the fact that once I realized the shark wasn't leaving me alone I had no choice but to try and fight it off so when I seen it coming at me I would swim back towards it like a game of chicken but all along it wasnt working really the shark kept coming back each time but when I started to hit the water top hard as I can believe me it definitely scared the shark it didn't know what was going on anymore it's like the loud sound sounded like explosions or something big and powerful and I was charging at it while doing it the shark got scared at swam away .... Before the shark would sometimes change direction to avoid the tip of the spear I was so scared as Its the first time I ever really got attacked like that... sharks normally just check u out a bit a go about their business but this time was different but one thing for sure I wasn't giving him not a single one of my fish 😂 I was swimming and diving hunting for hours I couldnt just give all it up cause I was scared I rather die 😂g b
While rationing your water when you're dehydrated or at risk of it is a bad idea, when you have a limited supply it's also bad to drink a lot of water all at once. If you drink, say, a glass of water in one go, a lot of that will pass right through you rather than being absorbed. You're better off taking smaller and more frequent sips so that you drink the same amount over the same time period, but your body absorbs more of it.
And plus once you find the water it, the birds have been taking a bath in it and you most likely know what else they’re doing so you’re gonna have to purify it if you can even drink it😅
It is extremely rare that a shark is inquisitive & comes close enough for you to strike it. If they mistake you for a seal or something edible, they are swimming at you so fast that you can barely see them thru the water before they have taken a bite. They don't like the taste of humans, so rarely do they bite again. But even a modest shark can bite your leg off before they've realised they didn't want to eat you.
Bird #1: We made it to the river! Bird #2: Great! Time for a drink. Bird #1: And splash around. Bird #2: Yeah! Birds #1 and #2: Do-de-do-de-do-de-do. Bird #1: Ok, I'm done. Bird #2: Me too. Ready to go? Bird #1: Go? We can't leave here. Bird #2: Why not? Bird #1: Because we're birds. We're only capable of flying TOWARD water. Bird #2: But we started out away from the water. How did we get over there? Bird #1: I have no idea. The bird survival tip was one I had never heard of. Even after hearing it here, it made no sense to me.
Eating bugs should be something you get used to in survival. Termites, crickets, grubs... Good sources of protein and nutrition. But there are types of bugs like millipedes that may prove poisonous, so some research should be done. Most I've personally eaten were from mealworm vending machines in a science museum and cricket chips though.
I never heard the "hack" to follow the birds to find water. But even if it worked, my bigger fear would be that I might not be able to drink from the water the animals do, as the quality might not be the best ... 😅
Drinking pee is a bad idea but like the video says, its made of 95% water. You should bottle it if you have a spare container because you might be able to heat it and collect the condensate from the evaporating steam, which will be safe and hydrating!
cause they're carrying gear lol. Sidestroke, breaststroke & backstroke all work fine to conserve energy in general, but vary as to which is best based on other considerations (such as experience & if carrying stuff or needing to see where you're going)
I have tried and true tested skills that i have learned from experience from years and years of hiking, backpcking and camping. Im also very familiar with the geography and layout of the land i explore in.
That Fishing Clash game looks absolutely horrible. Its not a fishing simulator, its (another) one of those childrens games with a million things going on at once 🤦🏻♂️
Don't east unless you have plenty of fresh water. [Except very fleshy, watery fruits.] Always look for MULTIPLE signs of water. [Large rock formations, particularity with green around the edges, animal behavior, etc. Remember if YOU are thirsty, other critters will be too. Concentrated urine is darker, so if that is the case, you are already in water debt. So drink to restore your energy, and then solve the water problem. Dehydration leads to a temporary dementia [which goes away when you re-hydrate. Not sure about cooling off in the ocean. When you emerge, the salt will dry on the skin, and probably some sand as well. This, together with your own skin oils, and sweat, will block pores, giving you a feeling of "prickly-heat" and partial suffocation [your skin absorbs oxygen]. The gas exchange is tiny in humans compared your lungs. Most animals do have cutaneous respiration [especially small, flat creatures] as their main or only form of respiration. Try to get out of the rip, while not fighting against it. You don't know how far it will take you, so aim to slide off to the edges and escape.
Actualy, recycling urin 3 to 5 times is not a bad idea in absolute must situations. Only then will it be too concentrated with waste-products (especialy salt) that it'll further de-hydrate you.
I heard that if u start drinking sea water along with fresh from the beginning of ur 'adventure' will not dehydrate you. If u wait to completely run out of fresh water and then while dehydrated drink sea water that is when it will harm u the most.
Mythbusters did a episode on shark punching in the nose, they thought it worked. Granted the sharks were not attacking so I guess the eye gouge is more effective in attack situation.
Most sharks have a nictating membrane that covers the eye to protect it when biting prey - so it’s actually not a good tactic. Best to go for the gills instead 🙌
If you go to settings, you can change the audio track English (US) original is what you want. This is our first video that RUclips has automatically dubbed in various languages. Thanks for watching
14:11 This is not how digestion works. I get why you'd think that your body excretes stuff it doesn't want, and you drink it and it goes back into your body and thats bad, however it's not actually in your body now, it's in your gut, which is not actually inside your body. It's not like urine gets absorbed by the body and the kidneys have to excrete it a 2nd time. All the stuff in your urine that isn't digestable or not wanted by your body, is simply passed out in your poo. All of the life saving water in the urine, which is what it is mostly made of, even if really concentrated, does get absorbed by your intestines though and it can keep you alive. And while there are salts in urine, it is not salt water and it's safe to drink. The only reason seawater is dangerous to drink is it has so much salt in it that it pulls water out of your body through osmosis and you become more dehydrated. That doesn't happen with urine.
I can't find a reliable enough source to confirm this but destilling urine will remove most of the contaminants but not all. The only why to convert urine in to drinking water reliably is by pushing it through a membrane that only allows water to pass through at high pressure (Reverse Osmosis). NASA has been able to recycle up to 98% of the water that astronauts bring into space by recycling their urine and sweat. The membrane technology they use can filter the wastewater into clean drinking water.
Distillation of liquids is generally not practical for survival situations. You'd be incredibly lucky if you somehow end up with all required utensils (that are also heat-proof) and with plenty of fuel. And "distilled" urine stinks really bad anyway, only the salts would go away.
If you're lost in the woods at dusk/night (or any dark / hard to navigate area), do not start following any animal, star, whatever UNLESS it's artificial light / a campfire. And even then, proceed with caution. Walking in the woods at night is a big no-no. Lots of things that you won't see until the last second can kill you, even a simple branch. If you're lost in the woods, and it's getting late, your best choice is to find as safe and comfortable a spot as possible, create some sort of bed by laying branches on the ground (isolate yourself from the ground as much as possible), and lay low until morning. And that was just the first item in this video - sigh*
12:38 actually i managed to go an entire week without water but ofc i didn't do anything, i was just sitting in my home and avoided moving as much as possible. 14:17 lol bear grills is as fake and staged as you can possible get.
Les Stroud AKA "Survivorman" is the best survival TV show. He packs his own camera gear, and is actually out there alone - short of a radio for dire emergencies. Back when he first started the show all the camera gear was *so heavy*, I can imagine he's extremely grateful when GoPros started becoming mainstream and like ¾ of the weight from his gear vanished.
If the universe is a simulation, then survival is a skill that a lot of people don’t put points into when their character is created. Some people just can’t grasp it. Ask anyone who’s done orienteering/ land nav classes in a group.
If they're lost in a forest, it's very easy to get turned around and get confused as to where you came from without major landmarks. And even if you know the vague general direction that you came from, it's super hard to walk in a straight line in a forest. Other factors like darkness, unfamiliar surroundings, and panic definitely can contribute. All that to say, it's usually hard to know what direction you came from by the time you realize you're lost.
There is a little water hack to use to save the water you have by chewing gum, a pen cap, a large button, preferably the ones on camos, to produce saliva. Find shelter ASAP. If you have to build one from branches, preferably make ABOVE ground and DRY as it could get very col at night. Which by the way, it is when predators are out hunting for prey. The Army survival guide has many tips to keep your ass alive. If you find a stream, follow as it flows. When I go on hikes by myself, please, ALWAYS tell somebody where you are going. You ain't going to have signal. Being in the Army, they did teach me skills other than to expire the enemy. A good sharp knife, quality hiking shoes, a water bag with a hose that extends to your mouth, and a flint and steel. Lastly, a basic first aid kit. I always have a tactical wristband that is also good quality rope, my gun, of course. Lastly, but not necessary, I have a yellow plastic tape to tie around trees in case of emergency and let the search party I am within the vicinity. Make noise to alert animals you are around. You don't want to surprise mama bear with her cubs. If you are in shorts and short sleeve shirt, WITH tour hiking footwear. Mosquitos are driving you nuts, if you are in Australia, ooof, rub GREEN eucalyptus leaves on your skin. The oils serve well as a repellent. Otherwise, mud worked for me. Don't do shit out of your league. If you are inexperience and ill prepared, many things can happen, and you will be FUBAR.
Only a total idiot would just drop an empty water flask in such a situation and leave it there. It's not only littering, but you'll also need that bottle to take water with you when you find it!

The best way to avoid a shark attack is to stay the hell out of its house.
Have you ever followed any of this bad survival advice?
Always assumed you should ration water, interesting.
The scene with Simon and Neil from Inbetweeners 2 😂🤢
No but Bear Grylls desperately keeps begging me to drink my own urine, it's become a bit of a problem really.
@@Vassilinia Ya know, at a certain point one starts to wonder if there's, well.... an ulterior motive... if ya know what I mean... 🤔
@@Vassilinia 😆
don't go for the eyes when faced with a shark - they will cover it with a protective skin that decreases their sight, making them more likely to bite... stay calm, keep your eyes at all times on the shark, and push some water against their gills to let them know that you know about their weak point.
@@DebunkedOfficial Depending on the shark it might hunt prey like seals or crustaceans which do possess finger-like limbs or at least sharp teeth that could damage the eyes, so do not underestimate the strength of the nictitating membrane ;) But I agree the eyes are sensitive - yet temporarily blinding an apex predator and risking to be further explored with its jaws is not... optimal.

Bear Grylls honestly gives so much terrible advice. If you follow the things he does you'll probably end up dead.
In all fairness, He has said that the survival tactics he shows would be for times when you know no one will find you and the best survival tactics will just let you survive longer but you'd still end up dying from exposure.
Wow, what a clifhanger, Stu ! We need to know if the man at least survive and back to civilization.
😆 Stick will return!
He was run over by a foreign taxi driver
2 hours after arriving..
Great segway Stu, and thank you so much for not supporting the idea of drinking one's own urine! Outstanding video, on what should be basic survival instincts... 👍🏻
ngl, i gave your vid a like after the "daydream" comment. Brilliant segue
Thanks for sharing your experience and an interesting observation about the booming sound detering them 👍
I'm scared of your lack of punctuation and inability to use paragraphs.
My GOD - paragraph breaks my friend. Aint no one reading that.....yeesh!
Have you ever heard of punctuation? Reading all of that is like you're saying a sentence constantly without any breaks or change of tone.
You are not paying your animator enough. He is great!
Thanks for the code I appreciate it and will continue to support the channel
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏿
By the fishing ad, I want to shake him and say “did you forget that you’ve been trying to get out of the woods”
And plus once you find the water it, the birds have been taking a bath in it and you most likely know what else they’re doing so you’re gonna have to purify it if you can even drink it😅
Great video! Enjoyed it
Expert diver advice...
If the shark's intent is really to eat you, you will be dead before you decide whether to punch it in the nose or gills
How would you know that water is safe to drink?
Another thing that should be debunked is eating bugs
Eating bugs should be something you get used to in survival. Termites, crickets, grubs... Good sources of protein and nutrition. But there are types of bugs like millipedes that may prove poisonous, so some research should be done. Most I've personally eaten were from mealworm vending machines in a science museum and cricket chips though.
Do you mean as in you can't just eat any bugs?
@@DebunkedOfficial yes
I love the animation in the videos on this channel.
These animations are so amusing! I am pretty good with knowing what I should and shouldn't do, but I watch anyway because it's worth a hearty laugh
Never heard flying birds to water.
Capture a monkey, feed it salt ~ lots of salt ~ it’ll run right to water when you let it go😂
It’s surprising how much that one guy pissed in a span of minutes
Watch out for that rip current! 😂
I'd never heard of following birds to water
Zuma beach, just north of Santa Barbara, it’s known for brutal rips
yeah following a rip out to deep water takes you out to meet the sharks, and how often will you find a raft.
Shelter > fire > water > food.
Bruh my mans video quality is better than %95 of the videos on youtube but still doesnt gets as much value they really are.
Stu, could you please make an audiobook, I could listen to your voice for hours?
😊 Thank you!
Navy Seals use sidestroke when tired, not breaststroke.
cause they're carrying gear lol. Sidestroke, breaststroke & backstroke all work fine to conserve energy in general, but vary as to which is best based on other considerations (such as experience & if carrying stuff or needing to see where you're going)
Well at least he had a clean pair of ‘Y’ fronts!! 😂😂
😆 I'm sure we could find some sort of survival use for those
I have tried and true tested skills that i have learned from experience from years and years of hiking, backpcking and camping.
The first myth is that your mobile screen should be used vertically-oriented
I heard that if u start drinking sea water along with fresh from the beginning of ur 'adventure' will not dehydrate you. If u wait to completely run out of fresh water and then while dehydrated drink sea water that is when it will harm u the most.
Seawater will never hydrate you or be beneficial in any way so why would you ever drink it for any reason? Horrible advice mate
LMAO! The ending rip current! HAHAHAHA!
fine, I'll drink my sweat
😆 safer than your urine!
Not a good idea. Also contains salt.
Find some moss in the morning. Moss naturally filters water and holds a lot of it.
9:14 sharks are jedi confirmed
Just flip the dang shark..lol
For some strange reason the audio is in german on my end
If you go to settings, you can change the audio track English (US) original is what you want. This is our first video that RUclips has automatically dubbed in various languages. Thanks for watching
@DebunkedOfficial thanks
Just a quick question: can you destil the water of your urine (by heating it up and catching the water vapor)?
Back when he first started the show all the camera gear was *so heavy*, I can imagine he's extremely grateful when GoPros started becoming mainstream and like ¾ of the weight from his gear vanished.
the rip current myth has every aussie screaming the answer
😆
Would it work to drink the shark's urine? And then peeing on the shark to scare it away...
If the universe is a simulation, then survival is a skill that a lot of people don’t put points into when their character is created. Some people just can’t grasp it. Ask anyone who’s done orienteering/ land nav classes in a group.
Why Would you have drinking flask underwater?
I tried watching this right before bed, and it stressed me out.
😬 sorry about that, hoped learned something that made it a worthwhile watch
Well, let's just hope I won't have to follow any of this advice in the future
I often wonder why people don't just turn around and go back the way they came?
If they're lost in a forest, it's very easy to get turned around and get confused as to where you came from without major landmarks. And even if you know the vague general direction that you came from, it's super hard to walk in a straight line in a forest. Other factors like darkness, unfamiliar surroundings, and panic definitely can contribute. All that to say, it's usually hard to know what direction you came from by the time you realize you're lost.
Can I get a glass of water at the sand bar?
So I cannot give the shark a fist but I can touch his eye. I wish I knew that when I played against sharks at the poker table.
Don't get stuck in the wilderness seems like the best idea.
Blue Herons will fly from Lake to Lake, it's the younger one's trying to fand a safe place to be (older Herons will kill them for their tresspass)
The DEBUNKED Fishing Clash gift code doesn't work :/
Apologies! I've reported it to Fishing Clash, it seems to work in a browser but not the app at the moment. I'll message here again as soon as I hear back
