90% of the time my "normal" pace is one that says, "I'm here on a mission and I don't have time to stop and talk." The few times I've found myself in the awkward conversations have been while standing in line or waiting. I'm not Scottish; well, technically there's some Scottish ancestry several hundred years ago on my grandmother's side, but that's totally irrelevant to why I started wearing a kilt. I'm not in a band. I don't play bagpipes. I'm not going to/coming from an event or a play. I'm not doing any highland games. I'm just wearing a kilt because I like the kilt and it's what I wear daily. And what's worn underneath is not really relevant to anybody. Imagine if I were asking the same question to any random woman wearing a skirt. I'd be seen as a creep. But I guess I'm asking for it because I'm wearing a kilt. I think I went on a bit of tangent there....
@@romainvicta3076 Always good to hear from our cousins from across the pond. As a general rule; if you can't Mix it up then you shouldn't engage. Even if it is a lady who "calls me out." I can usually tell if a comment is made in jest or not simply by their expression. I usually don't like to go there but I was taught to give as good as I get and depending on the situation, my mood, and the level of "Passion" in the mix I can get pretty "cut throat" in my retorts if need be. I chock that up to the sense of Scottish sarcasm in my heritage. I do try to maintain a certain level of humor to keep it light and try not to let it get out of hand. Yea, I can be a "dirty bastard" if need be but I try not to get too offensive if I can help it. I would rather have a nice "wee dram" of good Scotch instead.

I usually warn them, If they are going to "Play" then they should be ready to give as good as they get because that is how I was taught to "play" and I don't back down. We have a saying here; "If you can't run with the big dogs, stay up on the porch!"
I only wear my kilts for gigs, but even then, I get stopped . . . at the gas station, restaurants, even at the gigs, but I find I do the same thing when I have to 'move on'. I'll use the, 'I'm under very short time constraints', or 'people are waiting for me' and go. So far, nobody's been a jerk to me, but I'm usually running like my hair's on fire so it all works out pretty well. Happy Hogmanay '23!!!
Carry a pair of earphones, pop them in whenever you need to go without unwanted interaction. If someone tries to call out to you, oops sorry, can't hear you over my music(even if you don't have it actually plugged in!)
I have a look about me that doesn't draw attention anyways, but in such scenarios I always say "We both know what this is about, no nothing's worn, all in good working order".
I was stopped leaving a lunch engagement when two drunk guys at a bar asked me where my bag pipes were. I lifted the front of my kilt and said, I keep them down here :) shut them up immediately.
As I have been wearing a kilt for almost a year now. I have been stopped by all kinds of people. From the do you play the bag pipes!?To do you wear underwear!? I am still learning what works best for me. Just like after losing my leg. I had to learn to answer some god awful questions. But these are some good ideas to try. Thank you

Yea, all us older guys are kicking ourselves now on that score. I am a 60 yr old Man as of August 15th and I only found out about my Scottish heritage and Clan(s) two years ago. MacLean on Dad's side, Smith on Mom's.) Imagine if I had known far earlier and wore a kilt to my High School Prom. Well, I can't help thinking things would have turned out vastly different.
I don't have a poker face, if someone annoys me, it shows. The only thing that really bugs me while wearing a kilt is when,an older woman nearby, ha ha's in my hearing. But I can live with that, perhaps she was remembering something funny. Perhaps its a put down. But it doesn't work. People are usually appreciative, if I see a kiltie I always compliment them. This sounds easy to do, but with a bit of grace a kilted man could hold a mirror up to the abrupt kilt inquirer. Ask them about their decision to wear whatever it is they threw over their bodies, or if they have any idea how their cloths were made.
I just tell them that I need to go. If they they keep talking then I start to walk away and say thank you, but I gotta go. I get stopped often or pictures and questions.
Generally I get people who want to ask a question but don't know what to ask first, then they get frustrated. But they think your wearing a kilt is cool. I usually reply; In more ways than you know, Wink, Wink ;) That usually breaks the ice. Bless their hearts.
no one is cornering anyone about anything with this whole coronavirus thing. My state closed all indoor gathering spaces(bars, restaurants, gyms,etc) and people are distancing themselves from everyone. I kinda miss getting bugged
As a Piper I've been in this situation SOOO many times. A rather disproportionate amount by drunk guys. The latest one was when I was coming back from food in between an afternoon and evening timed piping competition, and a guy who clearly been hitting the bars early stops me and says: "Oh hey! You know, my grandfather is Scottish too!" "Um, okay...." "Yeah!" "Ah, right, have a nice day!" ::walks off quickly:: I've never really had a negative encounter, but I've definitely had my fair share of awkward ones where someone thinks the kilt is cool but doesn't know what to say.
I was going to post the same comment . I have been stopped twice in the las three months by guys in a bar that have had a bit to drink . They want to talk but have nothing to say . It is not very enjoyable . Every other encounter I have enjoyed however . But all the replies you mentioned I have used to answer the same questions as I am sure most of us here have had to do in the past . Cheers Joseph .

@Traditional Arts International Not where I live, in the States, they don't do that here! If you thought I lived in Scotland because of my profile pic, you are wrong. Wish I lived there though! In the States, especially in my state, you rarely see someone wearing a kilt! As a matter of fact, the only time I saw anyone wearing a kilt was during a very small pipe and drum parade in the summer, and those are two different firefighter departments from different towns. Only have this profile pic because my oldest brother insisted me to not have a picture of myself on social media.
