I can't imagine "servicing" up to twenty men in one night. That's two per hour for ten hours; or three an hour for seven hours. Yuck! Reminds me of the "comfort girls" from places like China and Korea who were taken and forced to service japanese soldiers during WWII. Some girls were as young as thirteen. I read somewhere one girl who survived later saying - during "working" hours - they'd be placed in a sort of cubicle with a bed and the soldiers would just get in line. She lost count, but estimated receiving 50 men during 16 hours straight. NON STOP. She'd be forced onto her back and it would go on and on and on. That's one reason it disturbs me when men chuckle and smile and make light of whorehouses. They were awful places with short life spans and rampant venereal diseases.

We had similar 'establishments' in mountainous northern Idaho state mining country in the town of Wallace. Maybe a half dozen premises operated from 1895 to 1988. The madams were said to be kind-hearted people who funneled their profits to buy police cars, sports equipment for kids, and other community upgrades. Today, there is a bordello museum named the Oasis that is amazingly similar to what you showed in Deadwood. Very interesting presentation ... with well-researched bits of info here and there to delight the audience. Thank you!

I read some articles about early western life and how towns & railways came about. When they struck gold in the Yukon the area just exploded with newcomers. Names like Diamond Lil & The Klondike had become synonymous with Ladies of the Evening.
The area encouraged girls to come to their towns by stagecoach and then by train. The prosperity was directly tied to this trade from private Madame houses to bars and saloons. It supported banks, general stores, opened schools for children. The Ladies bought imported linen and cotton goods; then hired seamstresses to make clothing, dresses, hats. They had built entire economies of fairly large scales in the 1800's even hiring a Sheriff & deputies.
At this point the train barons had taken notice and started laying track as fast as they can. I wish I can recall where I read all of this but nowadays a few minutes of Google search can bring you all the info you want. Perhaps a few RUclips R's with links can point us in the right direction.

The brothels in Germany were a bit of an eye opener to a young British Squaddie newly posted in. For a start, the Germans call a brothel a "Poof", which always raised an eyebrow. There would always be a bar, with drinks at three times the usual rate, and when enough beers had been drunk, a girl would lead the wide-eyed newcomer off through a door or curtain.

Hi Kevin! I once worked as a photographer in Fort Worth, Texas. The man I worked for came from a long line of photographers who had been documenting the Fort Worth area since around 1900. Some of the photos I saw from Hell's Half Acre, the red light district on the south end of town, included pictures of prostitutes from the brothels. While there were a few comley ladies, many were downright ugly. I don't know if they got the same pay as the more attractive girls or not, but I'd have to be pretty drunk to avail myself of their services!
I knew a beautiful young lady who was going to university on an ROTC scholarship. While not a prostitute, to make extra money, she worked as a stripper on weekends over in Dallas. On Friday and Saturday evenings, she could make $1,200 to $1,500. And that's just from dancing! God she was beautiful, and smart too! Upon graduation, she was commissioned a lieutenant in the Army and made the rank of Captain before she finished her service commitment 3 years later. She met another servicemen while in the Army and they were married in my backyard, back in the late 90s.
    Thanks for the tour, Kevin!

Please don't shy away from the most violent or dirty topics of history, as it is in fact a very important part to understand why current society is the way it is. I think that younger viewers should be confronted with this information so they can start question what motivates (or forces) women to engage in prostitution.

Having been stationed in Germany with the US Army one of the first things we were told was that prostitution was legal, regulated, and taxed by the German government. Just going and getting it over with was better (and way cheaper) than falling for the bar flies that could spot someone new and drain them of their pay buying 'drinks' (usually worked out with the owner of the bar) and being all flirty giving the young GI the misconception that they'd 'score' with them. Usually the night would be over, you had no more money, and the girls were gone. You were broke but hopefully a little wiser. We could wear our civilian clothes but our regulation haircuts and ballcaps made us stick out like glowsticks.

I grew up in western South Dakota and I’ve been particularly interested in your coverage of Deadwood. I recall when Pam’s Purple Door was closed in 1980. It was by news in the state. What isn’t widely known is that the pressure to close it came from the FBI and state DCI. The locals as a general rule were upset at the interference with a local institution that was seen as having a number of positive impacts.
The use of the employment and earning potential there was often a means to earn the funds required to advance to more socially acceptable education or business pursuits was covered in the video. However the enterprise was also viewed as a plus by some of the older wives in the community who saw it as providing a service to their husbands that they then did not have to provide.
There were also concerned when it closed that hunters coming to the area for the deer season would for lack of other outlets would be hitting on the local wives and daughters.
There was a great deal of local opposition to closing it. It was in a very real sense a tradition that many people were sorry to see pass into history.

I grew up in Deadwood in the 90's. A friend of mine's grandmother was the last madom of Deadwood.
The brothels were the hunting season. Northern Hills deer are tiny, and they don't taste good because of the poor diet. Wyoming had antelope and all around better hunting. The brothels were the draw to town before gambling came in 1989.
There is a ton of dark history in Deadwoods past.

Wow, you brought a lot of stories with you from your trip. And mixing them with your experiences from the germany of my childhood makes it even more interesting. This is a more sad part of life on the frontier, but, my personal opinion, if the girls did it voluntarily, this is also something that may have stopped some of those lonely men to do something to women or girls that we do not want to talk about. It is called the oldest business in this world, and it is not good at all. But sometimes necessary to prevent things happening that are even worse. As always, many thanks for telling the story. Fascinating, though this brothel appears to me as somewhat irreal, as so luminous, neat, clean. It's true that, in our imagination, we don't see bordellos like this one is. And may be because, I must confess it, those I frequented (yes, I did, may heaven forgive me) when I was younger in the Far-East were, well... quite different. But there was a scene that instantly reminded me my adventures in these sinful places : those ladies lining up in front of their client, waiting he picks one of them ! And thanks for pointing that these ladies, whoever they are, deserve respect and are not always abusively or violentely exploited. As far as I am concerned, it was the first thing I cared about, and that's surely why some of these moments spent there left me really good memories...

When I was little, my grandfather gave me a brass token on which it read "One Free Lay". Something genuine from the nineteenth century. I was just a little guy, but I really liked it.
I wasn't sure what it was, but I was excited about using it.

Back in 93 I ride my first Harley that I bought brand new. I actually ordered the bike because I had made a commitment to friends that we would all ride over to sturgis together what memories!!! 1993 Dyna Wode Glide. First year of the rubber mounted out Motors. And I believe the dyna Glide was the test run on this new approach to a smoother ride. We rode day and night back then 5 -6 hundred miles a day. Once we got to sturgis and on the way we did a lot of stopping and looking and just all the history. I believe most of us on that trip tgat year made some good history. If you catch my drift. We went to deadwood and Mount Rushmore what a trip.

I remember a story about of a couple of morons who wanted to start a brothel. They went to a bank to get some money for the enterprise and the bankster thought he'd amuse himself by asking questions aimed at determining their business plan, number of employees, etc. He quickly determined the two men had little to no idea of how to run a brothel and asked: "How can you open a brothel if you don't have any women?" To which they answere: "Oh, we're way ahead of you on that. We're gonna' run it by hand until we can hire some gals."

Great video and historically accurate! I went on a brothel tour in Virginia City, Nevada a few years ago and the protocols in the 1800's were the same as they were in Deadwood. From what I hear, those protocols in legal brothels today are very much the same but with much higher prices for services!

This sort of place is where Trump's money came from. His grandfather (Drumf) ran a bar and a brothel for the miners in the Klondike gold rush!. Drumf's son Fred Trump used the brothel money to buy real estate in NewYork which he rented out in rooms (he was a bad landlord asking exhorbitant rates for badly maintained lodgings - for whites only!). Fred Trump also supported the Ku Klux clan... which explains much of Donald Trump's background.

Las Vegas had the "weekend raiders," women who came in for the weekend to hijack the trade of the local "girls." There were stories that in the early days, girls would be given a plane ride to Vegas to be tourists there but the planes actually landed in Searchlight, a seedy little place south of Vegas, and not allowed to leave. They were forced to, um, "service" men.
