Some tips and opinions on using it wet like a spray for those who are interested 😊. Just a brief note I am an indoor gardener with a plant room and over a hundred plants, not an outdoor gardener, for context. I’ve used diatomaceous earth as a dry dusting power for pests in the past, including fungus gnats and had great success. Please do not overdo, all you need is an even dusting as you see this man doing here, NOT an inch thick layer on the top as I’ve seen some people do on Reddit. That will really dry out your roots and likely cause them to die off. For wet applications in a spray bottle, I think this method is best used as a *preventative* on the foliage, not as a treatment for an existing infestation in either soil or on the foliage. Spray application will apply a very, very thin, light layer that in my opinion is really not enough if you have mites, thrips or mealybugs already infesting your plants. Dry is best for that. But as a preventative in the spring, I think the wet spray application has its benefits, but do be aware you need a course spray bottle because the finer misters will clog. As a tip, try adding a few drops or a tablespoon of alcohol to your water so the diatomaceous earth spray with dry faster, as the alcohol will assist in the evaporation of water. Regardless of what application method you use, PLEASE WEAR A MASK WHEN APPLYING, an N95 is best for fine particulate matter. This stuff is like tiny shards of glass under a microscope, and if you’ve ever ran your hand over a layer of this stuff with any friction, you know how sharp it is. You don’t want this in your lungs, it can cause damage and scar tissue. No need to panic, not trying to scare anyone, just be cautious and with proper handling it’s relatively safe. Wet application is not less hazardous and is not a free pass to skip the mask, because the wet mist can easily be inhaled just the same as the dry powder.

Wow amazing! Thank you for your detail tips on Diatomaceous earth. I've used this product for various products but not as yet on my Meyer lemon tree. A friend used it in the house on her dog, and because she overdid it an hour later, she began to have problems breathing due to asthma. Thank you for covering the wet and dry aspects in detail.
@@ark1065 you’re very welcome, and I’m sorry to hear your friend had breathing problems as a result. I wish more people spoke truthfully of the dangers of diatomaceous earth. I still use it, but with the proper precautions.
I wouldn’t recommend misting plants with alcohol solution. Otherwise this would be a common method of insect control. This is likely damage your plant more than it will help. Also DE on the soil actually holds moisture in the soil as it struggles to evaporate so the roots won’t actually dry out from DE… you indeed can use this to water LESS often
I live in Rochester NY. We had an infestation of stink bugs inside and outside our home . They were in our closets, in our clothes. In the Christmas decorations we took out the next year. They were everywhere. We tried everything including an “Orkin man” with no success. I came across diatomaceous earth on You Tube a yr ago. I started out using a powder applicator around our windows. It worked. My husband hated the way the powder looked around the inside of the windows so he mixed some up in his sprayer, 1 cup/gallon of water. We sprayed the outside of the house, the Apple trees, the lilac bushes, the Hastas, the lilies, the raspberry bushes, the annual plants, the roses and the vegetable garden. Basically, we sprayed the entire outside of our house and yard. I can’t say enough good things about it. It works! Not only on stink bugs, but Japanese beetles, aphids, and whatever else is lurking around. And it’s not toxic to humans. And it’s cheap. I get it on Amazon. The brand I use is Harris Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade. I love it!!!

@@auctioneernorville2635 I don’t know a thing about breeding times. But I do repeat spraying with diatomaceous earth (DE) every 2 weeks. You may read that DE is not effective when wet but after it dries on my plants, it is effective again. I also use Neem oil 2 T/gallon H2O with a squirt of Dawn Dish Detergent for particularly bad infestations but Neem oil is much more expensive than DE.
Gary, I use empty baby powder bottles, fill them up with the DE and shake away. Good thing about these bottles is you can control the amount of DE powder by adjusting the top, and you can close off the top for storage.

I live and worked in the Bronx in 2009. A bed bug infestation broke out at my job and staff was not informed. We were all affected, and this saved my life.
Excellent! Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
I just used an empty bottle of dawn dish soap. It worked great. Was super easy to put a decent size line all the way around my flowers and around the outside of my house to keep the spiders out😁 It was very easy to control and get into hard to reach areas. It also worked great as a puffer to cover the entire plant as well. All in all it worked out fantastically.
I had a couple infestations recently, one was in a bag of mulch I bought (ants) and I didn't notice it until I had already mulched the top of a couple 20 gallon containers, the other was a flying ant problem that started under my grow-station in the basement. I Used a liberal coating of DE on the mulch and the basement floor. In both cases it solved the problems. It was very interesting to watch the infestation in the basement, since it was directly under my growlight and the flying ants seemed attracted to the light. After 24 hours I would say 80% mortality rate, after 36 hours, they were eradicated.
I take a hefty spoonful and electric blower. Hold the spoon under the intake and let it blast all over the greenhouse. Dispersed a fine coating in a large area. Simple
I don't have a leaf blower so I used the exhaust port from my shop vac and the house. It worked great in my garage (hoping it takes care of the spider problem); thanks for the idea!
Just add your dry DE to an old sock, a hose or a fabric bag and shake all over, and under, the leaves and close to the stem. The DE dust may be thinner and will reach to all the plant.
I did't know you could use it in water. That's a great idea! I also thought it was no good after it got wet. Good to know if it dries again it will still be effective. Thanks for the info!
So if you apply it wet as a spray and just wait for it to dry later, would that be a lot safer. We keep hearing rumours that dry DE is bad for the respiratory system.
I called the manufactuer of a pesticide DE...a scientist there said all the same. FDA requires different labeling if intended for human ingestion. We use it for intestinal cleansing...still alive here:)!
i also discovered using DE against ants .. it is amazing and chemical free LOVE IT .. i also saw where a lady made a paste with the DE and used a sponge spplicator to put it onto the stems of her squash plants , i think i am going to be trying this also this year and i love the idea of being able to make a sprayable solution for the leaves

I was about to ask if it does work with earwigs, they like to eat my live plants more than anything, last year they were a nightmare living just the skeleton of my plants
I always use it dry. I try to do it before the plant flowers and never when the flowers are in bloom so as to minimize bee injury. I sprinkle a bit around the ground too for the crawlers before they get to the plant.

DE is my go to garden and pet pest powder. My friend uses sevin dust, but I am 100% organic. I however didn't know I could use it in water!! This is gonna change my life, THANX!!!!
I bought one of those dustin mizers a couple years ago , junk in my opinion. I prefer a parmesan jar with larger holes does a nice job , puts the stuff out where I want it for the DE. I use for the aphids that attack my tomato plants each year. Should also help for the mites.
It does work. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs at www.therustedgarden.com & Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications. Thanks!
I'm down here in south Florida battling pickle & melon worms like I'm John Rambo and just found this video a few days ago. this really works! I sprayed it on wet, and once dried it looks like a thin white-ish coating on your leaves. thank you for sharing! I wish I had found this sooner.
I had a pretty decent infestation of thrips that snuck in my indoor Cannabis beds Cover crop. I used neem and other organic inputs to no avail whatsoever.Once I added sticky traps and applied the dry powder to the soil under the plants and the top of the raised bed and It’s been 48 hours and I have only been able to find one adult thrip. It’s important to shake up the plants so that the thrips fall off into the diatomaceous earth. I had been using Grandevo aloe and Quijaja with some results but the diatomaceous earth kills the eggs and pupa that hatch and fall to the soil (Grandevo is not an Ovicide )which is a significant part of the life cycle that most gardener’s don’t know existed or fail to treat. Once I took care of the pupa in the soil there wasn’t much left 🤷♂️ If they return I can go to the wet spray to finish them off 😂
This year I went to the 100% neem and seemed to work pretty well for aphids and japanese beetles. But as you commented ants tend to mine the aphids to plants and especially tomato plants. Next season I plant to start early applying DE around the base and said plants and neem as a spray. One problem with recipe for neem on my gal sprayer. 1 tbls and 1 tbls oil tends to bog down my sprayer. I have cut the oil back to about 1 tsp just enough to allow the neem to mix. Certainly watering first will allow the DE to stick to leaves and ground and be effective when the water dries.
I just have to say, this stuff works! I've been having an ant problem. I sprinkled it in cracks around the house around the ant trail, and followed the trail outside to their hole....poured some along the trail and into the hole. It was around 5pm and when I checked on it later around 11pm, they were ALL gone. It works!
Thank you so much! I want to see a video of how an ant reacts to it right away, and it feels great to know that you tried it and it worked. What did you use to spray it? There are small cracks around the house and I want it to be precise.
Mara A , what are terro ants treatment? Never heard of it. May I know what brand you got from Lowe’s? Also, since this might be an old post, has it continuously been working for you? I used tons of Diatomaceous on my garden and the ants didn’t even flinch.

Very informative video... I havent used DE in my garden yet. I plan to this season. I did just use it in my house. I purchased a bag of bird seed that had Grain Weevils in it and they got into my house. With allot of vacuuming and then putting DE along the baseboards in the infested spots. DE pretty much wiped them out thankfully. Weevils are no fun!
We use food grade around our floor boards and dust the cracks of the windows and ceiling. I found a duster on Amazon. Its keeps away all bugs. No ants, no mites, no spiders, no stink bugs, no earwigs...nothing since we've put it down.

The comments are great. I'd like to add that, as you did with your squash stem. you can do similar with celery. The problem I've had with celery is snails and slugs occupying the tight center where you can't reach them manually. They do some big damage, also leave nearly every stalk very unappetizing. Same goes for the earwigs that are endemic in my area.
I came to this video bc I have a bunch of crickets coming into my house and a few ppl recommended this product, I wanted a visual of how to apply it properly to the outside of my house. Ty. I hope it works.

The eggplant you dusted was in bloom. Pollinators land on leaves of plants too. DE doesn't work for snails and slugs in case anyone is wondering. I set slugs and snails in a testing tub that had a light dusting of DE in the bottom. They stayed alive for well over a week. They finally died. Probably from starvation or thirst. DE didn't effect them at all.

Súper late to the party, but great video! I am wondering how to protect the pollinators, though. Do we just avoid the flowers? They will crawl around sometimes, too, on the plants. And all of this blasting everything with the leaf blowers, while funny, sounds deadly to bees. Any suggestions?

Again, I had decided to give up growing squash because of squash bugs & SVB infestations every year. As a LAST RESORT I tried peppermint essential oil 1 tsp per gallon of water & spray on plants once they germinate. I have the most awesome plants this year - and NO BUGS. I am spraying every other evening but want to experiment with less frequency.
Gary Pilarchik that's the conclusion I've come to. Last 3 years big infestation destroyed all squash. This year (fingers crossed) not one squash bug OR squash vine bore. Saw the wasp early on before using the spray that lays SVB eggs. But nothing after I started using it. My plants are huge & healthy.
Ive been looking for info like this, but I have cat nip and peppermint growing all around and it never worked. Some lady posted that she grows cucumbers with squash and that seems to work. This year I haven't seen a problem, might be all this rain has kept the moth/fly away? I also put a barrier down around the base, that might have worked. Tin foil and tape doesn't work for me.
eveny119 I actually spray the diluted mixture on the entire plant. Especially at the base. In the evening so no pollinators are present. Spray does not keep bees away. Have more bees this year than ever. I just know that it works for me in Zone 7. It's been suggested to use Basil essential oil on tomatoes. Will try that from the beginning next year.
I've read the saying "if you see white, it ain't right." with DE. Might want to consider a different application method than this. PS: It's not recommended to breath in. I like the water application - gonna try that. It looks like a lot less loss, more precise, and shouldn't have to worry about the inhalation dangers. Currently, I use a small pump duster applicator and try to apply a "fog" (staying up wind). It's done real well this year for most every pest I've seen in my garden thus far.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is very low in crystalline silica (the dangerous form), so while I wouldn't intentionally inhale the powder, the dust from it is far less dangerous than is often suggested. Use care and common sense.
this will work on all insects that have an exoskeleton, so if not sure just look up the insect. if it has an exoskeleton it will kill them, iuse it inside and out. I love the channel and Gary is always to the point
Noticed you have blossoms on some the plants where you put the DE . So there is the dilemma , we dont want the pollinators getting the dust on them and dying.
So good bugs will always be killed. The goal is to kill the bad bugs, get vegetables and reduce harm to the good guys as low as possible. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Your Fall Garden Seeds and Supplies. Search keyword 'fallgarden' to bring up a a fall seed sale list. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yeah I think the whole Problem/solution/who cares about the fall out is one of the major issues with society right now. We really should be thinking way more holistically and in big picture ways. Sure its nice sometimes to have instant results but what are we leaving for future generations? We should be thinking about that and the planet and ecosystem as a whole too. I really like what they are doing in permaculture and regenerative gardening. Anyways...I've used DE myself but when I really consider my garden as a whole, am I doing more damage then good by using it?
@@amberemma6136 I’m no gardening expert in fact, I’m a newbie🤣 I just wanted to share my opinion on your post. I see your dilemma, as I to want to keep the good bugs around. I’d say most people that do any type of gardening would agree with that. That being said though, Gary’s absolutely right, good bugs will be hurt regardless of how hard we try to avoid that. It’s just something we’re gonna have to be ok with. Here’s the way I look at it, if I have a Dahlia that the beneficial insects love, but I let it die to a thrip infestation or any type of infestation, I’m not doing them any good. If I put DE on the Dahlia and save the flower from dying altogether, I’m keeping a food source around for all of the beneficial insects. Yes, I MIGHT hurt a beneficial insect during the process, but it’ll be better off in the long run for all of the remaining beneficial insects. Sadly it’s just the circle of life, there’s always gonna be casualties 😢 On the bright side here, at least we’re using DE and not Sevin Dust😱

I feel like, all you would really need is the sprayed application, for top and bottom. He puts way too much on top, especially once a week. But really thank you for the video, it only helped me learn.
Neal Austin is that really too much? I put quite a bit on my petunias and pansies today (avoiding the flowers as much as possible). They have been getting eaten up pretty bad, but also need to be watered every evening. This is the first time I’ve used it.
@@laurenadams4624 I did a lot of research on DE, and found a thinner dust layer is actually better, because it provides more coverage and forces the bugs to walk over it and not around it. If it's too thick and lumpy they'll walk around it. A half filled bottle with a funnel like a mustard or ketchup bottle, held a certain way, (more upright), will give you the ability to "poof" the powder out as a very fine mist of dust and will coat the plants very well!
I'm going to try using this to help prevent vine borer and squash bug infestations, also using water/Dr. Bonners/Neem oil when I need to. When applying this during the period where flowers are on the plants I would imagine just covering the flowers with plastic sandwich bags will keep the DE off the flowers thus NOT killing the bees that are polinating your plants!
So I use insect dust on bottom inches of stem. I found that works best. I remove flowers down there and keep the dust fresh. Its a tough problem with pros and cons to treating. I use condiment bottles to "squirt" the powder around the leaves also. I just ordered the upside down sprayer though to use the liquid for the bottoms of my leaves. My eggplant leaves don't look nearly as pretty as yours....yet :P
I have a 6 foot Moringa Tree. I believe it is infested with spider mites. I tried adding about 4 tablespoons of DE to my 2 gallon garden sprayer. I did a find mist spray all around the tree on top of the leaves, underneath and at the base. We shouldn't have any rain here in South Florida for a week or so. I also did a spray on my cucumbers, squash and a few other edible plants as a precaution. My cucumber plants were devastated 2 months ago from tiny green somethings. My new cucumbers are doing better as I finally rid the original infestation. Now it is preventative. If the water mixture works, I'll be happy. Thanks for the info

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thats amazing! Thank you! I was just playing around. I know you weren't trying to hurt the bee. It was probably better you shooed him away anyways. :) No harm done im sure. Thank you for giving our bees a home!
Yes. All kinds of fleas will be affected. I had a stray cat that visited my garden often and she had a bad case of the fleas. So I coated the ground where she used to lay down under my tree and i noticed within a couple days she was in a better mood. She even let me comb her. So I used DE on her sensitive areas where she didn’t want to be touched. Worked great!
For a 1-2 punch in any food/ornamental garden or shrubbery use Sevin powder & DE mixed at a 50-50 ratio. And for extra potency be sure to cover the plant bases, especially for squash type plants but avoid getting it on the flowering parts as it may hurt the bees.
Follow The Sun, thank you for the idea of mixing Sevin Dust in with Diatomaceous earth. In my part of the US, I have a problem with crickets eating holes in my irises. A friend of mine recommended using Diatomaceous earth to solve my problem.
Also considered the enemy: Leaf-chewing caterpillars, snails and slugs, along with sap-sucking aphids, whiteflies and spider mites. And those smallish bright green garden grasshoppers, especially those that abound in growing zones 8 and 9. I'm in a partial wetland area within zone 8 and slugs have been a problem. I use "Sluggo" liberally around my irises and other leafy plants & ornamentals. It takes 3-4 applications a season.
Thank you for this video, Gary. I bought some, but after reading all the warnings on the package, I'm scared to even OPEN it!! You make it look manageable & simple!!
I don't think it's that harmful since people actually eat it, you don't want to breath in the powder. Its used on farms in chicken bedding and food to kill worms and mites. I don't use it because I do not want to harm beneficials but may get some just for base of my squash.
Joanne Donovan Yes the regular DE is harmful. DO NOT EAT!! I do believe u can use it on plants as long as u wash off. If your doing organic, plan on eating or using on pets u need FOOD GRADE DE.I've been searching for it. Went to local mom and pop place. Woman told me yes its food grade. I read the insert..sd can put around chickens etc. ok if some falls on them. Then in big black letters sd harmful to domestics and humans. Um no that's not food grade then. I look at it like hydrogen peroxide.. depending on % some u can gargle with, diluted. And others are not to be used in mouth at all. So far I only have seen FG DE online. But I'm sure if I took ride up by farms..they would have. Good luck!
CJD,Yes ,must be food grade to consume which is white, pick up at feed and grain store. The only other kind I know of is in pool supplies which is off color, like grey or yellow. But I'm sure Joanne wasn't planning to eat it , she was just scared to use it on plants.
eveny119 by the warnings she's talking about almost sounds like the pool one. Someone mentioned either somewhere on here or another one. Home Depot now carries brand SAFER. I finally found it yesterday. Nope still harmful :-(

Gary,, I get the aphids on my tomato plants every year. I already have the diatomaceous earth so I drilled some holes in a empty peanut container lid and it works reasonably well for distributing the powder. Yes Ive already seen evidence of their presence.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN hi Gary, yes I’m a subscriber, several videos back. Great information you share & I’ve learned so much, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge through videos.
I bought this power & hand pump duster. I know this is a stupid question, but how do avoid too much power coming out. And when it does, will it hurt the plants
I know this isn't about gardening but could you help me? I found my laundry with tons of small white worms, idk what they are. They were also damp because of a leak, it rained heavily. What do I do? Should I just spray this thing everywhere? There's some spots sprinkling it can't reach.
This is really great information. Thank you for providing it to everyone. Is this safe for the fruits or veggies that grown on the plant? You mention using it once a week or so. Eventually, my plants will blossom and produce veggies etc. Do I just rinse it off the veg and eat or do I do something else?

Hey Gary, how's life Brother, I'm finding the grubs in my tomato gardens in huge amounts, but when I dig down 6"-12" deep. Will this be effective since they are all in the earth and not the surface. Will watering in DE handle my problem or would milly spores or nematodes be a better choice ? My Early Girl and Romas are growing very slowly, thank you!
I have a similar issue with my cherry tomatoes & would like to know the same thing. I purchased DE & beneficial nematodes & need clarity on which one to use. Also, Will using DE in the soil dry it out?
Thanks for the bit about how it's not effective when wet, but is once it dries again. Makes perfect sense and why people can't agree. "100% chemical free" is BS, though. Water is a chemical.

they sell cheap grenade like bulb dusters for this, & there is a hand-cranked blower that disperses this (or other powders) like a smoke. by earth dust: dustin-mizer.
Thank you so much for doing this, Gary!! I was actually kind of afraid of using it, as I heard you should not inhale it. I was wearing gloves and a mask LOL
I did some more research on food grade DE and found out that people eat it for health benefits! They eat it, Gary! lol I had no idea, I feel like I've been living in a bubble, haha
UzeHerName it's great for hair, nails and joints. I take a tablespoon daily and also use as internal parasite control for my dog and cats. It's great stuff! Great in garden but haven't found it to be effective against squash bug infestation.
UzeHerName think the key here is avoid prolonged exposure when dusting with it. If you get a little puff back from wind it wont cause lung damage. Wear a surgical mask when applying if you have concern. I use the white mask from Lowes in the paint department.
Dale Decker I don’t know if I would agree with that because it’s an inert material that doesn’t really degrade further...and I don’t want even a little bit in my lungs
I realize I’m a year late to the party... I need to use the wet/spray application for a large areas. I’ve seen one recommendation of using 1lb of DE per gallon of water. Was wondering if you could confirm this dosage? I will keep looking in the mean time... Thank you for the info!

I had a caterpillar infestation that was quickly decimating my kale plants. I sprinkled DE on those plants the same way as demonstrated in this video and the bugs completely disappeared! I was elated! But the next day, one plant was discolored. And was limp and leaning. The next day, half of my other kale plants had the same symptoms. My plants look like they are about to die. Good thing I didn’t spread my entire garden. I will never use this product again. Note: I do not blame this video after the fact, because I watched to see if there was something I may have done wrong..
I’m currently using it on my kale this season and it has taken care of the slug problem. All of my kale has thrived. Sorry about what happened to yours.

is it safe to apply the dry and the wet of DE by hand? like fingers?
@@White_Tiger93 yes
Thanks for the tips.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN no, thank you.
Wow so glad and you made the difference by being thorough.

1cup how much in grams?
Just keep from inhaling it in it's dry form. Not good for the lungs.
Would you recommend a large covering like this before the breeding time for these insects?

The holes are way too big in a parm container for me. I like the sock idea that someone had though, or applying it wet
Do you know if dish soap works for flea beetles? Spiders in the garden, BTW, are quite beneficial.
@@georgiarasmussen8343 yes, spiders useful in the garden, but NOT in the house!
@@georgiarasmussen8343 they meant the bottle I think , not soap
I had a couple infestations recently, one was in a bag of mulch I bought (ants) and I didn't notice it until I had already mulched the top of a couple 20 gallon containers, the other was a flying ant problem that started under my grow-station in the basement. I Used a liberal coating of DE on the mulch and the basement floor. In both cases it solved the problems. It was very interesting to watch the infestation in the basement, since it was directly under my growlight and the flying ants seemed attracted to the light. After 24 hours I would say 80% mortality rate, after 36 hours, they were eradicated.
When I used it on ants they were done in 48 hours.
I take a hefty spoonful and electric blower. Hold the spoon under the intake and let it blast all over the greenhouse. Dispersed a fine coating in a large area. Simple
Great idea. Good to wear a mask too.The Rusted Garden seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com
thats a great idea!
I don't have a leaf blower so I used the exhaust port from my shop vac and the house. It worked great in my garage (hoping it takes care of the spider problem); thanks for the idea!
Are you actually being serious or are you being funny? Lol
@@amberemma6136 It's what I do!!!
Excellent instruction.I have heard about using DE for years, but never was shown the best way to use it,until now .
Thanks I wanted to make something that showed the wet and dry approach and hope people share what insects it works on.
Just add your dry DE to an old sock, a hose or a fabric bag and shake all over, and under, the leaves and close to the stem. The DE dust may be thinner and will reach to all the plant.
Thanks
You should wear a mask.
@@Lizi46 I agree... That's why I like the idea of wet application. I would think you don't inhale much of the dust that way.
I did't know you could use it in water. That's a great idea! I also thought it was no good after it got wet. Good to know if it dries again it will still be effective. Thanks for the info!
I haven't used it really that way but it is an option people use and say is effective.
I wonder if a decent surfactant would help even further
I have heard the same thing, but since it doesn't dissolve I would think it makes sense that once dry it would be fine.
So if you apply it wet as a spray and just wait for it to dry later, would that be a lot safer. We keep hearing rumours that dry DE is bad for the respiratory system.
I didn’t have an applicator for a dry application, so I used a flour sifter. Worked perfectly.

What exactly do you mean by intestinal cleansing? I’m intrested 👀😀
i also discovered using DE against ants .. it is amazing and chemical free LOVE IT .. i also saw where a lady made a paste with the DE and used a sponge spplicator to put it onto the stems of her squash plants , i think i am going to be trying this also this year and i love the idea of being able to make a sprayable solution for the leaves

Glad to help. I am trying it out more this year.
Q: How soon can you plant after applying DE to garden soil?
I bought one of those dustin mizers a couple years ago , junk in my opinion. I prefer a parmesan jar with larger holes does a nice job , puts the stuff out where I want it for the DE. I use for the aphids that attack my tomato plants each year. Should also help for the mites.
I used to use it not only for self but plants. Unfortunately, bag found way to shed and lost. Thank you for reuniting the nontoxic pesticide.

Once I took care of the pupa in the soil there wasn’t much left 🤷♂️
If they return I can go to the wet spray to finish them off 😂
This year I went to the 100% neem and seemed to work pretty well for aphids and japanese beetles.
It works!
Always good to have notes from others.
@@zaiville I sprinkled on black ants and in their hole but didn't do anything. The ants were walking around with white powder on them. :(
I am going to try this for flea beetles eating holes in my lettuce. Thank you so much!
Good luck

This really worked amazingly well. I used the dry dusting. There is an absolute flea beetle massacre present now, all the stems of the plants they were eating are covered in dead flea beetles. It only took about 5-7 days to knock them out. Fantastic solution for me. Thanks!
And to add to that, very light coating is all I used. Just a quick dusting, very light and as evenly as possible.

Thanks, I just got a bag of DE for the indoor garden. I will look forward to get rid of the tiny flies in a week.
Can you let me know how that goes for you? I have an indoor garden and am experiencing the same problem with tiny flies. Just started using DE too.
Mixing with water makes DE so much easier to control. No waste and easier to get on all surfaces of the plant.

Thank you so much! That's what I needed to know. If I could mix it & spray it with my sprayer & it still be effective.

Did you use food grade or garden diatomaceous earth
Had to get a refresher course ! (Cucumber beetles much earlier this year.) -- thanks again Gary.
The bag I bought came with a diffuser that you squeeze and it throws a small cloud. More efficient.
mine did also. it sometimes sprays too much, but otherwise I like it.
I was having an issue with cucumber beetles, but one application of dry DE pretty much took care of it.

Thanks. Do you think the peppermint hides the natural smell of the squash plant.
I might order some peppermint oil. Worth trying.
True. Not much reaches me at 6 feet when I dust. I think the key is prolonged exposure but still a good point.
What I do is wear a mask and goggles when I apply DE
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is very low in crystalline silica (the dangerous form), so while I wouldn't intentionally inhale the powder, the dust from it is far less dangerous than is often suggested. Use care and common sense.
@@seanfife8398
Common sense? We are dealing with modern day people. I just hold my breath when applying the dust.
Wear a mask duhh... and the dry isn't diluted I recommend both
this will work on all insects that have an exoskeleton, so if not sure just look up the insect. if it has an exoskeleton it will kill them, iuse it inside and out.

Ty 4 this vid bcuz I wasnt sure if having that type of coating was good or bad. & I didnt know u can do it wet. Happy gardening Gary :-)
I discovered an aphid population explosion on my pepper plant that I brought indoors to save it from the frosts. I'll give this a try.

This was two years ago hw good was the outcome.... did it prevent bugs?
I'm excited to try this, but if it harms your beneficial bugs how do you use DE and still get pollinators?
Keeping it off flowers and being careful with the timing of application.
Do it when the bees aren't out.

That is a great idea.
Thanks for the info

will this work on white flys...I have them in my green house and need something that's safe to use near fish..I have a aquaponic system....
Thanks.
