According to the Genocide Convention, genocide is a crime that can take place both in time of war as well as in time of peace. The definition of the crime of genocide, as set out in the Convention, has been widely adopted at both national and international levels, including in the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Learn more about the definition of the crime of genocide. Importantly, the Convention establishes on State Parties the obligation to take measures to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide, including by enacting relevant legislation and punishing perpetrators, “whether they are constitutionally responsible rulers, public officials or private individuals” (Article IV). That obligation, in addition to the prohibition not to commit genocide, have been considered as norms of international customary law and therefore, binding on all States, whether or not they have ratified the Genocide Convention.
So who's preventing Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran from committing genocide against the Jewish people? Where is the Genocide Convention when it's the Jews who need to be protected from Genocide? or does it only apply to non-Jews?
Must be denied, no need look. No occupation I ask? No aparthied if walls and No equal rights for them? Killing others does not need the International Court. No veto? OK. Not occurring. I agree with many things Mr Friedman says and writes, especially on Israel and Palestine. However, he does not realize how much the hegemonial shift has already progressed. The US is not the indispensible nation anymore, as much as I myself wished it would still be the case. If the US and the west does not realize this and starts to compromise, also ideologically, in order to keep their status and influence, they will go down the hard way. We have seen this in history over and over again in the rise and fall of great powers. So often they fall deep, and pull the whole world into desaster, because they don't realize soon enough that they are not as powerful anymore as they thought they are.
It's worse than that. It had several iterations of 40 page report and station chiefs reporting on border activities up to and beyond to October. Not just military assessment. Troops focused on West Bank as part of Netanyahu's policy to divide and conquer to ensure no Palestinian state.
The Palestinians have been offered a state repeatedly but their Arab neighbors decided they'd rather wait so that terrorism could do it's dastardly work. As usual, the Arabs and Palestinian Arabs miscalculated and now there is little support in Israel for a two-state solution. Why? Because groups like Hamas or the PLO always end up taking over Palestinian governance. In 1970, they even tried to take over Jordan and assassinated the Jordanian Prime Minister. A few years before a Palestinian assassinated Robert F. Kennedy. They are sick and deranged people and they were that way before the Jews arrived. Arab internecine wars and assassinations were common. The arrival of the Jews gave them something to hate in common.
The narrative from US politicians that the Zionist offered the Palestinians a peaceful two state solution settlement which was rejected by the Palestinians is basically a blatant lie. This attempt at a two state solution are tabled in the form of a UN resolution in the general assembly every year and accepted by majority countries except by the state of Israel, US and some Pacific island countries.
Charlie so happy you are back 🎉I truly missed your show. No one has replaced it although Amanpour is good. Happy I just found this site. Hello from Tucson!
Friedman’s scenario isn’t convincing. Says Sindwar will be stuck with rebuilding. I don’t believe it. The international guilt trip will launch into action as always. UN, EU, even US will be pressured to “relieve the suffering” and blame will be forgotten.
Does capacity to relieve the suffering exist? I mean, to an extent commensurate with the suffering inflicted? No number of billions of dollars can bring back the lives of lost loved ones.
What a fantastic commentary. Mr. Friedman gives us years of experience, keen observation, and thoughtfulness all put together. And thanks to Mr. Rose for hosting and guiding the discussion with his on-point questions. This is the best thing I've heard politically in months.
It’s so good to see you. I miss your show on PBS. I made a point not to get into your personal controversy. I think you need to be on RUclips. Mind you, I am not a democrat and often I viewed your backing as wrong. You should never have been going to ABC or whatever the hell these people are. Get back in the game, enough listening to the bullshit of the left. There are independents like me that give an ear to both sides.
Oh my God how short fish memory is Both of the gentlemen forgot the West Bank Israel killing of honest civilians and forgot the endless settlements at occupied lands and evecting palastienans from their homes. All took place before Oct 7 2023. Thank you for giving me the chance to respond..
Yeah, sure. Like that's been the whole cause of Jew hate. Gee whiz there's never been any Jew hate before "the settlements". And if the Jews would just leave those settlements, then the world will just give them a big hug and tell them how much they love them. Just look at how much Hamas showed their love and appreciation when Israel self-ethnically-cleansed 8,000 Jews out of Gaza in 2005.
The only effort towards peace needed in this case is for the Palestinians to realize once and for all that Israel is not going anywhere, and to stop instigating wars against it. Once they do that, I promise you Israel will gladly make peace with them.
I don’t know what Friedman is talking about, a ceasefire on or before October 7th, because inside of this Apartheid State of Israel, more Palestinians had been killed in the West Bank than any other year of the occupation, so I don’t know WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, but I had tweeted, ‘Why REVENGE’ the week before October 7th. Because the word REVENGE had been scrawled on a Palestinian home that settlers had destroyed in the West Bank, just within a week before OCT 7th.
Friedman is a dual citizen and a settler (owns property in Israel) so his blindspot re The Occupation is willful ignorance. Nowhere did he admit the IDF has been shooting their own people according to the Napoleon directive. Charlie Rose's gentle line of questioning rather anemic with no hard questions (regional instability, 2000 lbs dropped on civilians, ethnic cleansing, UNSC allegations).

The Arabs have been poisoned by Ba’athism and are intolerant of any non Arab state in the Middle East. That’s why they can’t allow the Jews or Kurds to have their own independent states.
In May of 1948 when the state of Israel came into existence the UN also gave the Palestinians an opportunity to form their own state. Rather than form their own state. they decided to join Jordan.Syria and Egypt in a brutal war against the newly created state of Israel with the goal to destroy and kill all Jews in this new state. The Arabs failed and were soundly defeated in their murderous venture and now they play the role of innocent victims of Israel.
Friedman reiterates the Israeli government talking points and baseless claims without any due concern for facts or fairness. He shamelessly blames the victims for the Genocide that Israel is perpetration in Gaza. I am astonished that anyone would still find anything credible in what Mr Friedman spouts.

Why is it that all these so called experts of the area ignore the fact that Israel is an occupying force and when the occupied rise up against them it is a legitimate act.
"Rising up" is a pair of words. Specific actions, though, are specific actions. Are they justified in protesting in front of embassies? Are they justified in organizing international boycotts of Israeli products? Are they justified in killing Israeli soldiers? Are they justified in taking Israeli soldiers prisoner? Are they justified in killing Israeli civilians? Are they justified in raping? Are they justified in kidnapping Israeli children? Is any action prohibited? Or is nothing, _nothing at all_ , no matter how brutal, too contemptible if the cause is Palestinian freedom?

Nice to hear the intelligent side of the NYT (left) view but, it would be so much more valuable if a comparably intelligent conservative expert were at the table. This was clear to me when Friedman commented on climate change, my field, which has been hyped by the left far beyond the actual threat. A counter argument on climate is definitely needed, along with pointing out Biden's many weaknesses that are contributing to world instability -- it's like 1930s pre-World War II all over again, which led Hitler to attack a weakened Europe. Niall Ferguson comes to mind as an intelligent conservative that would provide meaningful counterpoint from the right.
Wake up folks. The Palestinians do not want to a State. They never wanted a state. They never took any of the 6 offers to have a state. A Palestinian state would look like Gaza, run by Terror. They want one thing, the destruction of Israel followed by the destruction of Europe followed by the destruction of the United States. Jihad is the core of the Quran and the core of their religion. It means there is no religion but Islam.
The Arabs are tribal; they are organized by families and need to be divided up into caliphates, individual families which are self-sufficient. All the successful Arab states are organized by families; 36:33 all the terrorists Arab states have multiple families.

Charlie Rose was my favorite interviewer, so happy to see him back at it
What You Say, When You Listen. ..... Respect, without it for your audience, you're unable to tell them much.
Wishy washy interview... Blah, blah, blah
Your show on PBS is what you should rebuild on your own.
You don’t need PBS, now-days you can be your own distributor of content and your interviews were extraordinary of quality. You owe me that. Get back in the game, enough listening to the bullshit of the left. There are independents like me that give an ear to both sides.
Having Charlie Rose back in RUclips is even greater!
Oh my God how short fish memory is
Both of the gentlemen forgot the West Bank Israel killing of honest civilians and forgot the endless settlements at occupied lands and evecting palastienans from their homes. All took place before Oct 7 2023.
Thank you for giving me the chance to respond..
Your bot training proceeds well.
Friedman is well aware of all of it
An Israeli resident said that Hamas knew about the concert because they were living and working side by side with Israeli friends, etc.
Villagers near Gaza employed Gazans, some of the jihadist attackers had maps with addresses and details of the residents.
Insightful - thanks
Sincere efforts towards peace ☮️ is needed on all sides.
Barely heard the word Hamas in all this babbling. Nothing required of them. Don't let anything get in the way of a two state solution
How many Jews have been killed by suicide bombers in the last 50 years? You forgot that part.

Charlie Rose....Missed you. The only interview show I ever looked forward to. Thomas Friedman...thanks for your very important and directional insights. I hope someone will listen. But I"m pessimistic. 2 groups of people with opposite visions and no ears at all. Who's going to fix that?
Welcome back, Charlie
The deep dive and longer format is considerably preferred in this dialogical context over the clips. Clips can be taken out of context.
Charly, why don't you come out from the past and at least try to inform your audience balanced. I assume you read John Mearsheimers 2007 book that should indicate what facts to verify instead of repeating the loop of disputed lies.
Bring on Norman Finklestein Charlie
excellent! superb!
Thanks for technology! Finally, we can hear the Palestinians’ story!!
The Arabs have been poisoned by Ba’athism and are intolerant of any non Arab state in the Middle East. That’s why they can’t allow the Jews or Kurds to have their own independent states.
Thomas never speaks about Israel's brutal occupation, he just skips that.
It’s neither brutal nor an occupation. Palestinians chose their situation after many state offers
@@bdadolphDid you ever offered to give them their territory back and take your arrogance with you?
No kidding. Palestiniens didn't choose this. Grow up
They voted in HAMASS. They chose it
In May of 1948 when the state of Israel came into existence the UN also gave the Palestinians an opportunity to form their own state. Rather than form their own state.
they decided to join Jordan.Syria and Egypt in a brutal war against the newly created state of Israel with the goal to destroy and kill all Jews in this new state. The Arabs failed and were soundly defeated in their murderous venture and now they play the role
of innocent victims of Israel.
Seeing you and Friedman talking is like the old days again. A great listen. 💕
Friedman reiterates the Israeli government talking points and baseless claims without any due concern for facts or fairness. He shamelessly blames the victims for the Genocide that Israel is perpetration in Gaza. I am astonished that anyone would still find anything credible in what Mr Friedman spouts.

Great to see CR back! And with TF.
Glad to hear the criticism of leadership.
Yes, you are right nobody won this war. In general, I believe nobody wins a war in modern history. The two people must sit down and think about the future of their children and think what happened and the madness of both extremism. They can live peace and harmony without violence if they want to.
Israel wants to. Palestinians don’t. And that is the simple truth

Thank you, Mr Charlie?
I truly appreciate Mr. Friedman's unbiased logical comments. "What were you thinking ?" is the perfect question. Overreaction on both sides: NOBODY is listening. Do I still believe this was an "intelligence failure "? Likening Netanyahu to Trump: No I do NOT!
Why is it that all these so called experts of the area ignore the fact that Israel is an occupying force and when the occupied rise up against them it is a legitimate act.
"Rising up" is a pair of words. Specific actions, though, are specific actions.
Which specific actions, specifically, are Palestinians justified in doing in order to improve their economic, political, and religious situation?
Are they justified in protesting in front of embassies? Are they justified in organizing international boycotts of Israeli products? Are they justified in killing Israeli soldiers? Are they justified in taking Israeli soldiers prisoner? Are they justified in killing Israeli civilians? Are they justified in raping? Are they justified in kidnapping Israeli children?
Is any action prohibited? Or is nothing, _nothing at all_ , no matter how brutal, too contemptible if the cause is Palestinian freedom?
What happened on October 7th was not a legitimate act, and if you disagree then you are subhuman and outside the moral community
As a british- israeli citizen, i must attest that the last thing the majority of the country want is to occupy anything, we dont want to be scared to be killed when we are a bus stop, by missiles and have to send our sons to war. please read history from a neutreal scource and enlighten yourself

Im so glad to see Charlie Rose.
I can’t believe how Friedman won Pulitzer prices. Did AIPAC made phone calls for him?

Exactly. He's talking from Israel's point of view almost all the time. He himself is Jewish of course.

As one father said, " thanks, Israel and the western media for showing the world who you are and what you do"
Wake up folks.
