I am Cuban. Bought a NES a couple days ago. Thought it was broken but your video saved me! Thanks so much! I was so happy when I fixed this pin issue! I just have one cartridge but hope to get a couple more. They are hard to find in my country. Thanks!
I Had to go through my Google search history in order to find this again so I could thank you for this! For the past couple of years I haven't been able to find a video that would properly explain how to fix the connection issues, I always had to jam something on top of the nes cartridge in order to even get a chance for it to work and that's not including screen tears or connection issues during gameplay. For the longest time I thought it was a motherboard issue with the gold pin connectors so I'm glad I didn't try to fix that since it wasn't the issue, I tested all my game cartridges just last night and I hadn't had a single issue since doing this so thanks a million!
Thank you for this! I took apart my NES to fix my cartridge slot latching down and when I put it back together I was getting green screen and scrambled graphics, along with my slot still not latching down. Your video helped me fix both issues!
Thanks a lot for making this video! I bought a NES for my son today and I thought I just flushed away $100. 1/100 attempts I could get it to work but then it would just glitch out after playing it for a bit. He was devastated, as he’s on a Mario kick right now. Trying to plug in the controller while it’s gutted on the counter. lol Anyways… I was leery on opening it up to fix it but chose to do so anyway. Followed your instructions and it works flawlessly now. Thank you!
If your cartridge does not want to stay down/latch down then there is a little lip on the cartridge guide that is supposed to fit under the front edge of the NES motherboard which has snagged on the top. Many people misdiagnose this as the guide being screwed down too tight, since loosening the screws really does get it latching again, but that is definitely not it.
Mario Bros 1 & 3 were running fine - Zelda didn't. one of the NES-Pins (where the mario games don't have any contacts) was bent a little, so i pushed it back up like you showed in the video. Zelda runs again - thank you very much =)
I found that the screw on the bottom under the lid should be left out. It greatly improves the working of the spring mechanism. Those are not heat shields, but RF shields.
@@lovemadeinjapan Jobs did work at Atari back then. ;) Atari, Apple Computer, NeXT, then Apple again. The government wasn’t clear about new RF/EMI regulations so Atari overdid it. Jobs wanted machined iPhones (and everything else) just… because.
Really cool fix, but I've heard blowing on the cartridge is terrible for it - more likely to help gunk it up than fix it. Don't know, maybe this is exaggerated, but having played a wind instrument, after blowing into it, there's plenty of saliva and who knows what there that should be wiped out. Surprised that was your first move. : )
Hey @HowToWith GEO, not sure if you’ll see this but do you think 71% rubbing alcohol is good enough to do the job or should I get some 91% or better like you said.
What happens if some games have lines on the screen and others are just clear images? Mario games and Metroid all have lines running through them while Zelda and TMNT run just fine? I can’t figure it out.
I tried cleaning some games and it still didn’t work. I wondered if my nes itself needs fixing but super Mario bros 3 works on it so that’s clearly not the case
Never q-tips. They are horrible as they leave dust. Toothbrush and plain water are your friend. Also don't suggest rubbing alcohol as it can be both ethanol (you DON'T want to use) or isopropyl/isopropanol/2-propanol (that DOES work).
@@HowToWithGEO it was my dads childhood nes. Whsn i acquired it, i cleaned the board and the pin connector and disabled the 10 nes chip. I was fighting with the pin connector for a while until o found out one of the pins were messed up. So i took my other nes because the pin connector was good, and now one of the pins are bent out of position, rendering it almost useless. So i did order a new connectoe and i hope it solves the issue

Awesome video!!! Was about to sell my NES for scraps and watched this video and now it works thanks to you!!! Thank you so much!!!

Same thing on my nes

@@matthewprevost8336 glad it helped. :)
Thanks, was about to open it again to tighten the connector, will check this on the go.

Those are not heat shields, but RF shields.
What would be a good magnetic screw driver to open that console to get the 72 pin out off Amazon?
Not a "heat shield." It's RF/EMI shielding for FCC compliance.
Quality Japanese stuff had sturdy chunks of metal. Cheap consoles just used a aluminised cheat of paper.
@@lovemadeinjapan Meanwhile, the Atari 800 and most Atari VCS 2600 entombed their motherboards inside a machined or cast block of aluminum. ;)
@@emmettturner9452 I can see americans love milling aluminium, Jobs being a big fan as well. Ever touched a NeXT Cube?

All my nes carts work but one boots up but keeps restarting, it's super clean and plays fine once every ten tries, so what's wrong with it

great job
I still have my old nes nice

No never use anything less than 91% Alcohol on electronics. If anything you should use 99%.
I just bought one with new pins. It'll work for about 5 minutes when I can get it to work and then it goes crazy. Any suggestions?

Wiggle it
I fixed my problem with my LoZ golden cartridge but my tv made popping noises and my screen was yellow, other cartridges work
If one game works but others don't would it still be due to the pins in the console?
Hey someone here with Felix the cat game? In trying to fix it, can someone tell me where does the front pin 2 connects to?
I tried cleaning some games and it still didn’t work. I wondered if my nes itself needs fixing but super Mario bros 3 works on it so that’s clearly not the case
Some games seem to have thinner boards.
try cleaning the cartridge with rubbing alcohol glass cleaner and q tips most importantly clean the 72 pin connector

So basically you can constantly repair a system and it can last forever
One of the pins on my connector is actually lime bent out of where theyrd supposed to be
Are you able to resend it back? Otherwise you may need to buy a new connector.

my mario 3 has some weird glitch at the bottom of the screen that spreads
My NES didn't give a shit that I gave it a new connector.
