I use a Deering 5 string. Modified your method a bit strike the third string with my thumb strum up and tap the fifth string. Thank you for the inspiration.

Really good video. I use a daring, five string banjo strike the third string with my thumb strum up and then tap the fifth string kind of a modified version of what you do again you’ve been very helpful. I sent you a comment once before.

I think I'll call it Mr. Mike's Magic Music Method. Thank you for explaining how you tune for playing. I-V-I-III, C-G-C-E. And playing the open, 5th fret, 7th fret, the I-IV-V chords of C Major. A nice thumb and strum pattern. It's brilliant. It's also amazingly deceptive. All those songs, and If I didn't know what to listen for, I'd never know, I just hear a wonderful song being played.

Thanks for this. I got a tenner banjo chicago tuned. But never realy like the sound from just strumming too metallic so tried your method and now love the sound. Sounds like a banjo should.

Fred on my lesson update with the dark colored banjo I show some lyrics and how to change . I use 0,5,7 to place on the word you change . 0 means open 5 means 5th fret and 7 means 7th fret I tried to make the video so you can watch my hand when I change and follow along good luck

Hi Mike- at the young age of 83 I have been left a beautiful five string banjo. As a guitarist for many years sadly feel not enough years to learn the banjo. Your teaching was a real eye opening- so I am a convert- and will enjoy this new journey together. Just a thought- is it at all possible to retain the fifth string. Ray
    Cheers.

@Ray Hall yes Ray you can leave the 5th string on but it’s to easy to hit it . The best bet would be to take the fifth string off, the tuning peg can stay with no problem in fact when you slide your thumb up to the peg your fingers will be in position to play the fifth and seventh fret. You can always email me with questions or Facebook messenger good luck.
