I'm a VW nut. Have owned a beautiful restored 1967 beetle and recently purchased a 66 convertible beetle, from original owner. The 66 is completely original. Paint, interior and top and all in great condition. And best of all the previous owner kept everything! From sale contract, EVERY service receipt and DMV registration.... But I must say that bus going for 198K is just outrageous. They have made it completely impossible for the average person now to purchased one and the only thing that's going to be available now are going to be rust buckets going for $30K+. I know the history and the background but that's just too crazy.
djmhyde back in the day it was just another utility vehicle. It was ahead of it's days beccause it offered much space for little money. The mini van version was indeed a new innovative thing but was still cheaper then a lot of the US contemporary people's movers. Don't get me wrong: I love these cars and this one is gorgeous!
I spent a good deal of my childhood travelling in a '59 bus. What a gawdawful thing it was; a mobile terrarium in the summer and a most effective icebox in the winter, all while criminally underpowered. Obviously for some nostalgia is a powerful thing.
I'm curious what you meant by "poor maintanance"? My father was a top flight RCAF fitter and rigger and certainly knew how to maintain and repair a car. And I'm even better than he was. I have no idea why you're going on about airplanes although I'm pleased that you can still get it up at eighty+! I don't know what it has to do with a woefully underpowered, ill handling, unheated box on wheels though. One thing's for sure, for the money this guy spent, I'd have an SF260, thank you very much.
J W ...we can bro we just realy have yo work hard and have patients to get one but one Say you could find one maybee not un dat condition but time an patients
He's got a point. A patient is someone in a hospital, I believe you mean patience. Patients aren't going to buy cars for you. Well, maybe really wealthy mental patients. Actually, maybe you're on to something.
Wow,,,I bought a 1966 23 window in 1971 for $700,,would only do 60 mph but was lot of fun to drive, wish I still had it to say the least, this is insane.
hey, they did made the best wars! it took half of the FUCKING PLANET TO DEFEAT THE GERMANY! France got so fucked,UK almost got fucked, poland got fucked ,Norway got fucked, and many others has well, so yes germany did made a good war !
Mass insanity! I had a 54 Barndoor. Paid $80 in 1967. Might this be one of the few restorations where the owner actually made money on their project? I love seeing this, but the money disgusts me. People with too much money, trying to outdo the next guy, because they don't know what to do with it!
It's NOT a Kombi, it's actually a 23-Window Deluxe Microbus, my 1963 Kombi has only 11 windows in it, but THIS one is A THING OF BEAUTY!!! Just watch the bidding action (and the $$$!) go up and ENJOY!!! . I'll bet my Kombi would bring in some $$$ in the sum of a five-digit figure but nothing like this!!!
I bought my 65 blue Transporter in 75 for $800 and drove it for 10 years.Traded it in on a new 85 pickup and they gave me $2000 for it.Sometimes wish it was still in the family.
Greed in the VW community to purposely drive the market up. I saw that 1st hand back in the 80s and 90s...And they still sell stuff at Pomona and keep hiking the market up.
These stupid auctions only push up prices even more. Don't get me wrong I love VW buses but they're not exactly rare but fetch a lot more money than some very rare sports cars which is a little ridiculous.
MarcusTDM it's buying into an image. you get modern day bus things and you kinda get labeled. driving one of these yiu get smiles waves and good vibes. alot of it now these days is just that. :)
chris jarmain Yes, that's it, you've hit the nail on the head, you buy into the image and an experience if you like. I really enjoyed the week we had in one. Just a little frustrating that prices are so high over here in the U.K.
A friend to me got a vw split bus for free that had been sitting in the forest for 40 years in northern Sweden, he sold it for $ 12,000, it was very rusty and lacked floor and engine, Besides that, it was complete
This is the reason I wont be able to afford one when I can actually save some $$. Everyone thinks this is what they're worth now. I've wanted one for a decade but hell if id pay that.
+Retroman Barette Jackson has ruined the muscle car pricing for everything. Lots of people out there with lots of money to burn and they want that car from their youth at all costs.
True. BJ have inflated the prices of a lot of cars. The fools who paid over the top are now down to half what they paid or less. Back down to there true value.
For nearly $200K, I could find something else I'd much rather have than a VW bus. And if I did collect VW's, I could buy several nice ones for the price of this one and still afford to buy a Combi by settling for one in a little less nice condition. Of course, if you have enough money, it isn't a matter of choosing one or another. You can buy any or all you want. But, I can't imagine that with that kind of money you would be collecting air cooled VW's. So, this still doesn't make much sense to me. I guess for those who must have THE best, the sky is the limit.
Count on an auction to make people to overspend like there's no tomorrow. Gets sold for far more than it's worth because some obsessed idiot with too much money at an auction has a moment of weakness as a result of greed.
know people who know guy that had it, was not all nut & bolt resto as story in local paper said either lol....65 year Old guy that bought it, at least drove it home not on a trailer, after taking the wife out to dinner.....Being in the right place at the right time. Someone with more money than brains lol. @200k I'd buy more than 1 old splitty!
Even if I had the $$ I wouldn't pay it! Crazy! Now they have to lock it up so it won't get a scratch! lol Silly! NOT WORTH EVERY PENNY! They're for fun...'cause they don't go fast..etc. etc. don't get me wrong..i luv those old VW buses..but I also would love to drive about town, run errands, go to the beach, etc. and not worry about it! again, too crazy!
Can anyone find the actual paint colors and process that was used on this bus? I want to use these exact colors on a different type of vehicle. I heard it's a bit different than the actual stock look which makes it tough to find.
I think it's the mouse grey L325 and pearl white L87. Thats stock colors for some sambas (and it's the color I have on mine). Good luck with the vehicle
KihlbaumCreative Thanks but I have also read on forums that people who are into classic buses say that the colors on this bus don't look totally stock but I like them and want to reproduce them.
+David Castaneda Yeap, only half the value of a real one. I think I'll go to the £1 shop and buy a Hot Wheels car, then to the local car sales and say, "Ah, I'll pay £2 for that car please. What? But it's the same as this one that was £1!"
Practicality be damned. This 23 window VW bus is not only rare, but a rolliing work of art. A masterpiece of line, color, and form.
davidhunternyc yug
it cost a lot to get there
One of the most beautiful cars ever made!
I sold my 23 window back in 98 for 4500. It was rust free, totally complete and ran great. It sat on the auto trader for 4 months! What a joke.

Exactly!!!
200.000 dollars in a car that some pepole in my country use to sell fruits and vegetables...
Voce mora em Brasil?
i was born there, but today i live in UK
And you're still selling bananas?
no se compra una Porsche vendiendo plátanos..
djmhyde back in the day it was just another utility vehicle. It was ahead of it's days beccause it offered much space for little money. When Debby and I first got married we had a 1963 combi VW... it was great fun! This one is beautiful!
it boils down to this....a car is WORTH what one is WILLING to pay. May this fella enjoy that beautiful vehicle for years to come ! =)
I spent a good deal of my childhood travelling in a '59 bus. What a gawdawful thing it was; a mobile terrarium in the summer and a most effective icebox in the winter, all while criminally underpowered. Obviously for some nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Thank you. Finally a bit of honesty about these miserable campers.
vayuwings Whereas your childhood goal to grow up to be a supercilious Internet nitwit came off without a hitch?
Let me just add to this if you will that comfort and speed are everything.
I'm curious what you meant by "poor maintanance"? My father was a top flight RCAF fitter and rigger and certainly knew how to maintain and repair a car. And I'm even better than he was. vayuwings SIAI-Marchetti SF260 / WACO Meteor
Screwed VW Busses for the rest of us, for eternity...
This car is one of the cutest ever, just amazing overall.
Thanks for fucking it up for the rest of us, now we can't afford to get em.
yep, crushed my dreams. I go to bus shows and cry
yes you can. JUST GO FOR IT.
Actually, maybe you're on to something.
well worth the money ,it was restored to pristine condition, paintwork was flawless...amazing vw bus....
Wow,,,I bought a 1966 23 window in 1971 for $700,,would only do 60 mph but was lot of fun to drive, wish I still had it to say the least, this is insane.
I liked my 1963 bus, but it was the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I would buy another one if I could afford it. go figure.
Den schönsten Samba-Bus den VW je rausgebracht hat .Top restauriert .
if germans make something they make is soo fucking good that no other country can beat them
Yep, like making wars hey?
hey, they did made the best wars! it took half of the FUCKING PLANET TO DEFEAT THE GERMANY! France got so fucked,UK almost got fucked, poland got fucked ,Norway got fucked, and many others has well, so yes germany did made a good war !
Tanel Murd are you sure your moniker is Tanel Murd, not Manel Turd?
and what are you ? Horny Miller ?
JAPAN they make everything better
Mass insanity! I had a 54 Barndoor. Paid $80 in 1967. Might this be one of the few restorations where the owner actually made money on their project? I love seeing this, but the money disgusts me. People with too much money, trying to outdo the next guy, because they don't know what to do with it!
Bloody hell, As a young child in the 1970's my grandfather use to cut spit screen buses up for scrap metal value at the back of his garage business.
Considering it's not origional, this is bananas. Pick up a body out of southern states for 20k and put another 30k into it and get the same result.
Several years ago, saw a ‘63 Bus auction for $213,000 there at Barrett Jackson.
Jay Leno said, "I want it PERIOD! Make it happen."
More likely it was Jerry Seinfeld. He already owns one and has a whole collection of air cooled cars.
FLUFFY.
Wow that's a sweet one☺️ myself owner of a 56 panel bus fully restored it just a month ago and now starting a 56 oval 😎
Ridiculous. So many better things to spend that kind of money on. That bus is badass though.
That's only about twice as much as some of the vans I've seen in the UK :)
That's great! He was so happy when he won.
I believe this used to be my dad's van. He sold it in quite rough shape to someone who restored it to perfect condition
I bought my 65 blue Transporter in 75 for $800 and drove it for 10 years.Traded it in on a new 85 pickup and they gave me $2000 for it.Sometimes wish it was still in the family.
I like this bus🎉 in my country we use these to haul manure from the dairy farm 🎉
That is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
Que lindaaaaaaa....... quem me dera a minha, 1972 azul, caiçara que esta parada ha 8 anos estivesse assim
Greed in the VW community to purposely drive the market up. I saw that 1st hand back in the 80s and 90s...And they still sell stuff at Pomona and keep hiking the market up.
It's a beauty, and super cool, but this was just some rich people playing their foolish rich game.
Yup! Purposely to drive up the market.
These stupid auctions only push up prices even more. Don't get me wrong I love VW buses but they're not exactly rare but fetch a lot more money than some very rare sports cars which is a little ridiculous.

MarcusTDM yes! I wouldn't own one here in the UK! Kent weather is naff. so buying one here seems silly. I've got a plan to get one imported 😎😎
A friend to me got a vw split bus for free that had been sitting in the forest for 40 years in northern Sweden, he sold it for $ 12,000, it was very rusty and lacked floor and engine,
Besides that, it was complete
ya you're right but patience, the money will arrive
It's a rare 23 window. 99% of buses rusted away...and of those left a fraction of 1% are 23 window models.
Worth every cent
This would have been the equivalent of $30K max in today's money, when new.
I wounded if this caused a increased price people ask for their vintage VW's?
This is the reason I wont be able to afford one when I can actually save some $$. Everyone thinks this is what they're worth now.
I've wanted one for a decade but hell if id pay that.
Can't imagine how cheap dollar is. 200k only buys you a used VW van. :-(
Cool little bus, but not even remotely close to being worth 200k. Man Barrette Jackson is a total rip off.
Loads of money for a souvenir. Wrap it in a blanket, dribble over it.
I could build 5 of them just like it for that kind of money!
unfortunately you don't built them they have to be factory original and we'll kept
worth at least 200K, where you gonna get an original 21 window bus?
+buzz kirschner Actually it is a 23 window...more rare than 21's
I count 25 window with the 1/4 lights
@@JosephYearwood precisely, this example is German built 63/64 not Brazilian hence crazy price
he looked happy but he got ripped
Dave Kindig's went for well over $325,000 after auction premium
This is art, design and history for sale.
Don't even think about the money put into the restoration,
it's not about that.
I thought Kobi's where just vans with windows and Samba's had all the seats and windows etc like this one?
that model is a 23 window samba, not a kombi.
Must be nice to have money to burn
Look at the Porsche painture colours of the 60s, pink, purple, aso. And nowadays mainly black, white, grey, dark blue =/
Der Hammer!!! I love it what a Car!
i have a factory multi page VW sales brochure on the this model.
For nearly $200K, I could find something else I'd much rather have than a VW bus. And if I did collect VW's, I could buy several nice ones for the price of this one and still afford to buy a Combi by settling for one in a little less nice condition.

Cool Bus
It was one person bidding the whole time.
$100 says the Buyer owns a Jerry Garcia T-shirt
You can order an new VW-Bus like that for around 120 000.- in Hannover, VW Plant, Germany. Why visiting an auction?
It's not a Kombi, Its a Samba or a deluxe. A Kombi would have been a bare bones work bus without seats
Some people have more money than brains!
I cant afford the front bumper😭
Count on an auction to make people to overspend like there's no tomorrow. Gets sold for far more than it's worth because some obsessed idiot with too much money at an auction has a moment of weakness as a result of greed.

+Stevo Phillips That's how it is, people pay even crazier prices for some rare stamps or other silly stuff.
People with more money than time
Nice Car 👍🏻
I have seen this at Barrett Jackson auction
In Brazil you cab bus one VW Bus for $ 5000
I kin love Vdubs
Maybe the buyer is going to turn-it-over for a profit? That's how these guy's roll :)
What do you have to do to your TV station to deserve the punishment of commentating an auction!? Bill O'Reilly's coming soon?
i swear i saw this exact van near my house
$270,000 for one on Saturday (1/21/17)
Really....I daubt there was such model ever came from the VW facory
Pure car porn. Danm what a car. Wish 8 whas Lucky enough to have one.
$198,000 he must have been drunk
I’d rather buy a OG BUS for like $30k restore it with another $30k that’s a $60k bus right there
Is that Amy Lassiter I see God she wanted me but I never gave her the satisfaction
2 words.......HOLY CRAP!
Excelente vehiculo
Whoever bought that was just stupid. He/She could have went out and had one built in that condition for about the 10th of the cost.
Le #Combi le plus cher de l'histoire ? 200 000 $ dollars quand même... (aux enchères)
Superb
Awesome
unreal price
That bus isn't worth the money.Someone got suckered big time.
perdon, pero este modelo no es de 1952/1954 ?
The model years are not the same in south America and USA. (Sorry, my Spanish is not that good)
Can anyone find the actual paint colors and process that was used on this bus? I want to use these exact colors on a different type of vehicle. I heard it's a bit different than the actual stock look which makes it tough to find.

KihlbaumCreative Thanks but I have also read on forums that people who are into classic buses say that the colors on this bus don't look totally stock but I like them and want to reproduce them.
it only gets to 35mph on hills and 38 mph with a headwind....he better be careful or he will get run over...
Somebody please explain to me why it's worth so much cash.
i love bulli
there's a hotwheel vw bus
that worth 100 thousand dollars. .
+David Castaneda Yeap, only half the value of a real one. I think I'll go to the £1 shop and buy a Hot Wheels car, then to the local car sales and say, "Ah, I'll pay £2 for that car please. What? But it's the same as this one that was £1!"
That's not a Kombi, that's a Deluxe isn't it? Kombi's were one color and basic.
what a steal
