Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021.

I cannot understand why moving back from 5x USB 3.2 (453Be) to 2x USB 3.2 + 3x USB 2.0 (453D). It is a huge HUGE limitation ...
Great video as allways!
I appreciate you doing this comparison. I currently have the Be but based on all you've described, I can't justify the cost of the upgrade to myself.
@Shamika Bash Um...what does that have to do with anything?
Nice rundown. My TS-453Be died within about 28 months. Terrible reliability =(
Yes my ts-453be also died with the dreaded red light. Did you manage to move your drives into a new NAS?
Same, it’s to do with a bad silicon intel chip
Yes, I agree with you, they are making the decision quite complicated, in B->Be they removed SD slot, Direct Attach USB etc, in Be->D they removed 3x USB3, speaker and still kept the PCIE bottleneck...I wonder what do they remove in next generation...=) nevertheless, I received my 453D last week and there is no going back...=)
the pcie bottleneck is an issue of the processor series. I get the idea was to keep it the cost low but I feel they would have better accomplished it with an AMD solution but I wouldn't know for sure.
Love this guy!!!
Is the TS-453D more reliable than the old 453be and can I move my raid 5 drives to the new TS-453D
tbh they are as reliable as one another in a general sense. I think it would be better to think in terms of stability. The newer gen Intel CPU and higher frequency memory will result in less resources being used in your NAS interactions and therefore allow more overall available resources generally.
Thanks for that, sadly my 453be has failed, if I purchased a 453d can I put my drives into the news NAS (original positions) and turn it on and seamlessly carry on as normal? Oh and if you don’t mind a side question. When my NAS failed I had a backup drive connected how do I retrieve my backup without a NAS.I just wonder how many more people have backup drives connected to a NAS actually know how to retrieve their data. Or could they be like me think that it’ll never happen to them. Thanks for your help. Great channel 👍
My TS-453Be allso failed. It reported a problem with the drives and couldn't access them. The replacement unit could access the data for just a few minutes. The replacement of the replacement works until now just fine and had no problems with access to my hard drives... i really dont know what is the problem...
Some people say that not compatible SO-DImm-Ram (banks) could be a problem
I dont know. I just keep the original 2 GB for now and dont risk anything, until i seem to need additional Ram for some more demanding tasks....
Hello, I'm thinking of buying TS-453D-4G, will it support system upgrade to the latest version?
Hi, I love your channel and was hoping you could help me out with a purchase. I'm looking to upgrade my WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra Nas to something a little more powerful to use for Plex. Personally, I'm only using it for HD movies, however for some reason, using plex outside of my home network really struggles to load movies and keeps buffering. Also, I would hope that something quieter than the My Cloud EX2, as the fans on this Nas are really starting to annoy me.
Does this product exist, or am I hoping for too much? I really just want a quiet decent plex device.
Is the comparable to the tvs 472xt ?? I’m on a wall about this .. help please :(
453D is better with 2 x 2.5Gbe
