Thank you very much for this. I wasn't doing a upgrade but somehow that set screw came loose. I never heard it, i believe it came out when when i turned it off. Heard somthing ringing then clunk. Panic, thought it was a bearing. Nope set screw stuck in the pullys. This video kept me from panic! Thank you again!
Thanks for doing this video. Especially thanks for the tip on being sure the new motor is positioned to accept that cam. I just did my upgrade today - getting that pulley off the old motor was a bear! I have a tip for anyone else doing this upgrade. Putting that setscrew back in place caused me a bit of grief - kept falling off my Allen key and into the pulley housing. To solve that problem I put a small piece of chewing gum on the tip of the Allen key to hold the setscrew in place. Problem solved.
Thanks, I am watching all your videos. My first lathe was a Nova Comet, and loved it. Last year I sold the Comet and bought a Nova Orion, unfortunately I have a few problems and Teknatool has been out of stock on parts hope they get this resolved soon.
Instructions were great. I got to putting the electronic control on the motor--no screws etc. in pack. I called up and they were like we don't have those they should be in there. YES. They SHOULD be... Oh well. Video helped a lot.
Agree with others - great helpful video. Thanks for providing . I’m curious what you or others are doing with their old motor after the upgrade. I’m sure there is some great ways to repurpose it but am wondering what I would want to do with mine if I (when I) upgrade my motor
Dread Knot Woodshop I swapped it out tonight 20 minutes all done. Watched your video twice just to make sure. My polley popped off in about two minutes. Again thank you great video
Thank you! I have a Nova 3000, that I bought without a motor, he took it with to use with his newer Nova lathe. This will help me mount a new motor when I find a NEMA 56 Frame Face mounting motor. Want to sell your old motor...lol.
hello ...nice video thank you from germany ....one question: between the red cover and the 19 er screw in front i have a rubberring for distance..... you dont. now i have one problem: if i go on the lowest revolotion the drive rubs against the inside of the red cover. Do you think i should remove it? thanks
@@davidvankooten946 I got mine in the states years ago....I did this upgrade and its worked out great, love that I can vary the speed on the fly now and the motor has good torque too.
Dread Knot, perfect instructions. I appreciate the little tips you put in there as well. if you don't mind me asking, how much did the upgrade cost. thanks for posting. ✌️, Jeremy
Great video. I noticed that there are several videos on this topic. I'm looking into buying a lathe and was interested in this lathe. Since everyone seems to want more power would you recommend that I just start looking for a lathe with 2 or more HP at a higher price point?
The DVR upgrade is 1.75hp @ 110v and 2hp @ 220v by simply changing the plug. This is the only lathe on the market that allows this kind of upgrade (without resorting to aftermarket solutions). I have found that the DVR motor has more than enough power in and of itself. One cool feature is that it can detect when the motor is under load and will supply additional power to eliminate "bogging" down. This is a great way to go, start out with a great lathe at around $1200 with the ability to add bells and whistles later to bring you to the equivalent of a full sized, full featured lathe later. Hope that helps.
Hi, I have a 1624 II that I upgraded to the DVR motor just over a year ago. My question is have you had any issues and had to deal with Nova/Teknatool/Striatech? This last month I've been getting the sporadic "hardware fault" on my drive then it resets and I can keep going, it's very annoying. I've been emailing and leaving messages with them for several weeks now and I've gotten no response. Just wondering if anybody else has had issues with them and their lack of customer support. At this point I wouldn't give them another penny, very disappointed in them.
Hey DKW, loved your video! I have been trying for three days to get this step spindle off of its shaft. I’m more than frustrated. Before anyone asks, yes I removed the set screw. Is there a tool that will do this easier?
This is a bit late , but there are bearing/gear pullers available. The wedges will work , I've used wedges on shafts that were bigger, on something this small there is a good chance of bending the shaft. You should be able to rent a puller from a tool rental business. When there is a aluminum pulley on a steel shaft you will find they bind on pretty firmly, and I recommend coating the shaft, bore and all other screw threads with "anti seize" compound just to make things easier next time
A bit off topic, but regarding the hand wheel: I added the exact same hand wheel as you have, but I find that the bore in the hand wheel is just a hair too small for the knockout bar provided with the 1624. It works, but it is frustrating and annoying. Have you experienced this?
@@DreadKnotWoodshop Thanks for the reply. I've thought about doing the DVR upgrade, but am too concerned about vibration that I have in the current setup since I'd like to do longer spindle work like chair posts. My sense is that the vibration relates to the belt and pulleys plus the motor being hung out in the air, but that's just guessing. I can take another pass at double checking the leveling. Given the grief I've heard people report about breaking the pulley free and then, also, the grief they've had getting it not to move again after doing an alignment, I've hesitated at aligning the pulleys since, by eye, they seem good.
@@ef2beven though you will still be using a belt, the addition of the DVR motor will reduce viration significantly. Have you tried weighting your stand?
@@DreadKnotWoodshop Not yet, but is definitely on my mind. I guess I'd need to drill the legs to attach a shelf. Actually, if I do that, I'll try to make something like a truss to add rigidity, too. I tried looking at your older videos back when you were using the 1624 to see what you did but couldn't find a view below the lathe ways. :-)
I purchased this upgrade today from Tools-Plus with local pickup. Upon opening the box, there was only one manual for programming the control box but no manual for the installation of the motor. I also found there were no screws or washers to install the control box to the motor housing. I used an temporary alternate mounting method to secure the box but now need to determine the correct size and thread of the screws and can find no documentation anywhere at all including Teknatool, Striatech or dvrsmartmotor.com websites. Manuals on Teknatool do not show screws. Finally, on start up of motor and running at low speeds, or when changing speeds, there is a scrapping sound that to me is absolutely not normal for a DVR I wouldn’t think. I will contact Tools Plus on Monday To get some guidance. Has anyone else experienced this type of motor noise or is it a consistant “clean hum” like I had heard. Mine is not unfortunately. I am also amazed that there is such poor (none really) explanations on many of the motor programming option. Are we supposed to just guess what these settings mean and how changing them affects things like ramp up acceleration, etc?
MFA 2696 Same problem here - bought it from them last week. No instructions, no screws to mount the control panel. Got good info from this you tube and from a Google search. I found a couple appropriate screws in my parts bin that work OK. I don’t think this was Tools Plus error - the unit appears to have been packed up in China and Tools Plus probably buys them in bulk and re-sells.
First class instructional video. A thorough explanation of each and every step.
great job on this video for upgrading my Nova 1624. Clear and straight forward. thank you

It is approximately $800US at the time of this writing. I have included an amazon affiliate link if you are interested. amzn.to/2Rq9jtQ
