  • Hey Guys,
This video guides you to setting up your Battery powered portable TP-Link MR3040 3G/4G wireless router with ZTE AC2791 (known as Reliance Pro 3 in India)
The set-up is pretty simple, you don't need to install the CD received with the Router.
This device has many of the important features of a conventional router plus has the advantage of portability and it's form factor is lesser than most routers. It easily fits in your pocket and is about the same size as an iPhone 4/4s
Things you need to know about the router:
    1. It reboots when you connect it to it's charger via the Micro-USB port and reboots when you disconnect charging as well.
What this implies is that you should be prepared for temporary connection loss when you keep it for charge or remove it.
(Edit: 23rd Feb, 2015: This is not happening frequently, most of the times the connection is staying "online" after removing it from charge and re-connecting although sometimes it just doesn't work and I have to restart the router to get it working again! Urghhh!! )
    2. It provides good range upto 10 feet and then it's range drops exponentially thereafter.
This implies that it will provide coverage in all corners of a 350 sq ft room if placed in the center. Good enough for most rooms (Hotels/Bedrooms)
Keeping the router at a higher height will provide a marginally better coverage. Walls will reduce it's effective range further; so if you are sitting in a different room than that in which the router is placed, you will get reduced throughput (slower speed) while browsing.
    3. It's battery life for 3G/4G connections is about 3-3.5 hours. If you are using it as a WISP client or an Access Point (AP) the battery lasts between 4-4.5 hours
    4. The modem can also be configured as Repeater/Client/Bridge in the AP mode.
You can refer to the manual in the accompanying CD on how to do that
    5. The back cover is a bit flimsy. If you keep on removing the cover often, chances are it might break.
The reason why you might to open the back cover is when you need to check your Serial number or the initial Wi-Fi password after resetting it. I would suggest you take a photo of the back of the router after removing the back cover and refer to the photo when you need it.
    6. If you want to increase the range of this device, you can buy a WiFi Range extender.
One suggestion is that since this device can support a maximum speed of 150 mbps, buy a range extender that supports the same speed. Buying a higher speed range extender won't be of help and will cost you more.
    Pros:
All that is listed on the TP-Link Website
Points that can be improved upon:
    1. Back cover build could have been better
    2. Having two LAN ports instead of 1.
    3. Higher battery capacity
If you have purchased your router before August, 2014, you might have to update your firmware for the Router to detect AC2791.
For purchases made after August 2014, the MR3040 should work out of the box.

      Afzan Hassan
      Hi Afzan,
Reliance Pro 3 is launched in the state of Karnataka. You should be getting higher speeds with Pro 3 in all areas of Karnataka.
However, I would recommend that you check the network strength in your area.
I see that there are Reliance stores in Bhatkal, so please visit them and ask for a speed demo.
      Good Luck!
      Best Regards,
      Rupin
Note: I am using the data from the Reliance Site as of today:
Rev B (upto 14.7 mbps is available in the following circles:
Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, UP West, West Bengal (incl Kolkatta), Rajasthan, Gujarat & Kerala)

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

Afzan Hassan I got it for 1400 in Pune. If the seller doesn't agree in reducing the price, please go to another store in Bhatkal or order it online.
I agree Bhatkal is a small place, but Reliance claims that Pro 3 is speeds are available all over Karnataka. I would recommend that you try a demo first. Maybe you can ask the shopkeeper to share numbers u of customers who have bought this device and talk with them.
      Good luck!

      Miles Kinafick Hi Miles,
Lets try troubleshooting your issue. Hold your TP-Link router like a credit card with the words TP-Link to your right. At the bottom there will be a button with 3 modes, make sure the button is on the 3G/4G mode.
Connect your ZTEAC2791 to the router and login to 192.168.0.1. One that page, scroll down and you will see the 3G/4G status. Something like this:
      3G/4G
      3G/4G USB Modem:Identified
      Signal Strength:100%
      IP Address:100.XX.XX.XXX
      Subnet Mask:255.255.255.255
      Default Gateway:100.XX.X.XXX
      DNS Server:220.226.100.40 , 220.226.6.104
      Online Time:0 day(s) 00:00:43
You can check if the parameters are fine for the ZTE dongle, if the signal strength is 100%, then it's a problem with your TP-Link device, if the 3G/4G USB modem shows "unidentified", try to unplug and re-plug the dongle.
Good luck! Let me know the results
      Cheers!

Do you know how Reliance Wipod works ? Does it serve the purpose of both router and modem that can be plugged directly to power ?

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

      Hi Naresh,
Well, the answer to your questions is a Yes and a No
      Yes, because
      a. it can be plugged directly into Power
      b. It does a part of the job a normal Wifi router does. (Gives WiFi internet access to 6 devices max)
      No, because
a: It doesn't do a job of a modem. Modem per se converts Analog Signals into digital and vice versa. Router only works with Digital signals
b: It fails to perform all the functions that are present in a router. (No Ethernet port, no Access Point feature)
I went to the Reliance Store to check out the WiPOD. It is offered in 3 models out of which the WiPOD Haeir M1 model is battery powered. The Haeir M1 has hardware that is pre-configured to Reliance. You don't need to purchase a datacard separately, however, it also means that you will not be able to switch your internet provider to Vodafone, Docomo, Idea etc, if you wish to do so. It's battery is at 5200 mAH that would easily last for 8 hours plus on battery power. Unfortunately, it can connect only 6 devices. This might be enough for a single user, but if you have a family or need to share it with friends, 6 device limit is too small for me to even consider buying the WiPOD.
If you are looking for something that supports ADSL, is a router and can be plugged into power, consider:
Reliance Wi-Bridge 3G/EVDO Wi-fi Router with Adapter. It is a newly launched router and does exactly that you would want it to do. It's price is almost similar to the TP-Link MR3040 but it's battery is outstanding at 5200 mAH. It also supports datasharing via a pendrive (you can connect a pendrive an share it's contents wirelessly to all devices connected to the network). It supports upto 20 users. It does lack the Ethernet port which you would need to connect to a Desktop and you need to still purchase the dongle separately.
Please consider your requirements before buying your router. Is the cost justified by the utility you are getting? How long do you need the battery power before you can plug it into a power source? Do you need to use it in with a desktop as well as with Wifi enabled devices? Will you be using it indoors or outdoors?
Good luck with your purchase! Do let me know once you buy your device, I would be happy to know!
      Cheers!

      Rupin Karani
Hello Rupin.. Thanks for the detailed explanation. that certainly cleared my doubts.
I was actually looking for a device that can be plugged into power directly and serve internet access to a wireless ip camera.
I have a new office on the outskirts and didn't have any providers that can give me a phone line and BSNL would take months to get that done. Till i get one, i was thinking of getting a device that can be plugged into power directly and serve internet access to 1 wireless ip camera, so that i know whats going on in my absence.
I have already got a Foscam Wireless ip camera and was thinking to pair with a device, so that i an setup port forwarding, but looks like this dongle will not have these features as router. Do you know if any that will suit my above requirement ?

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

      Hi Naresh,
Thanks for clearing things up, Any 3G/4G WiFi router will meet your requirements. If there is a power issue at the remote location where your office is, go for a battery powered router like MR3040 or D Link DIR 506.
If you have a power back-up installed or very occasional power failures are there in your area, you can go for TP-Link MR3020, DIR 505 or Tenda TE-3G150S
All of these market routers allow you to set-up port forwarding. It's fairly simple. For TP-Link routers, you login to 192.168.0.1 and use admin as username and password. Then on the left side panel go to Forwarding -> Virtual Server -> Add New
Enter the IP address of the Camera along with ports and you are good to go!
One a side note: For you to be able to monitor your office via your Foscam camera, you will need to know your computers external IP. The problem with Reliance or any other internet provider is that they give you a random IP each time you are connected to the internet. If you don't get a static IP, for each time your connection is reconnected, you will have to ask someone who is sitting at your office, to provide you the latest external IP that is assigned.
As far as I know, the ISP's provide static IP for a small fee which you need to pay per year. If you don't want to purchase a static IP, you can go for third party services like noip which keeps a track of your dynamic IP changes so you can always track your office IP
      Cheers!

      Rupin Karani
Thanks Rupin.. I have done the configs of port forwarding and it works fine at my home.
But the problem at office is i don't have a phone line to get a broadband connection. So i was checking if its possible to connect Reliance Pro to one of any router which has USB port and then connect my camera to the router. Do you know if Reliance Pro works well in that case ?
I guess thats what you have done in the video above. But the Reliance Pro 3 Model in Reliance site seems to be different. So just wanted to confirm.
Again thanks a lot for all your thoughts/help in this.. Much Appreciated !!

      *****
Naresh, I am not sure if something has changed since I purchased it.
As long as the devices are using the same Rev B network, the device appearance shouldn't matter. I would recommend you to visit a Reliance store and check out the available models.
Reliance Pro will do the job for you. However, you will need a minimum speed of 512 kbps - 1Mbps to stream the live video feed. Any wireless dongle will give you varying speed depending on your location. If I were you, I would ask reliance to give me a demo at my office before purchasing the Dongle.
      Good luck!

Rupin Karani I live exactly 3.2 kms away from the tower and I get around 1Mbps on my Reliance 3 (3.1Mbps) dongle. I would be really pleased if you could say the distance from your home to the tower, and the speed that you get at home.

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

      Hi Anandhu,
To be honest, I do not know where the towers are located.
I tried searching on room site regarding coverage in my area, and it seems that there are plenty of towers about 1.5-3kms from my home. I don't know to which tower the network latches. However, what you need to be assured is that the distance with the tower won't affect your browsing speed by a great margin. It's all about the number of active users in your circle.
      Hope that helps.
      Cheers!

hi dude how s the speed of reliance pro 3 and please tel me the location as well and speed

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

      Hi Sekher,
I am using the dongle majorly in Pune and have used it in Mumbai, Lonavla and Bangalore as well.
Even though the device supports upto 14.7 mbps, the max you will get is 3.1 mbps since Reliance is yet to upgrade it's infrastructure to provide 14.7 mbps
The dongle has 3 modes, viz. High Speed 1x, Pro 3 and Hybrid. Pro 3 mode is the fastest of the 3.
On an average I get between 270-480 kbps download speeds on Pro 3 mode. But yes, in certain places I do get 57 kbps browsing speed where coverage is low or the number of users are high.
I am sharing the result of speedtest below that I took today:
      www.speedtest.net/my-result/4139068210
You can expect such speeds on an average day. However, I would highly recommend that you take a demo of the speed at the place where you intend to use it.
      Cheers!

    • @RupinKarani
      @RupinKarani  9 лет назад

      sekher m Hi Sekher,
I am currently paying 999 + tax (12.36%) for unlimited plan. Earlier it was 40 GB cap, but now reliance claims it is truly unlimited. I haven't really monitored my usage till now, so I won't be able to comment on the trigger.
Honestly, it is difficult to track my exact usage since I use it on 5+ devices with the MR3040 router. But I haven't faced a speed downgrade during my 1.5 months of heavy usage.
      Hope that helps
