  • The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of ancient Roman civilization, characterized by rule led by emperors, and extensive territorial possessions around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The 400-year-old republic that preceded it had been weakened and unstable by a series of civil wars and political conflicts, when Julius Caesar was crowned dictator for life and then assassinated in 44 BC.
Civil wars and executions continued, culminating in the victory of Octavian, Caesar's adopted son, over Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium and the conquest of Egypt.
After the above events, Octavian's power became unshakable and in 27 BC, the Roman Senate officially gave him full power and the new title of Augustus, effectively marking the end of the Roman Republic.
