- funky soul from the late overton vertis wright. "ace of spades" was produced by hi records producer willie mitchell in memphis, tennessee. there is about 3 different versions of this song all featuring the same backing instrumental but has o.v. phrasing and ad-libbing differently on each. since this is the version i heard first back when i was a kid, this one's my favorite. for some reason, this version can only be found on vinyl. o.v. wright will always be remembered as one of the greatest hard soul singers of all time. he was a stateside favorite and enjoyed a cult following overseas especially japan.
o.v. wright sadly passed away in 1980. Видеоклипы
hello my name is Tyrone andi grew up in Chicago and I have not heard ace of spades since 3rd grade and I'm 59 years old and the music haven't loss its soul ,thank goodness for the internet
Indeed.
My late mother used to play this song when I was a little girl.
Hands down, one of baddest songs of all time.
Memphis Tennessee 10 toes down every day all day. O.V. Wright,Willie Mitchell and the HI Records band cookin' up that southern fried funk for ya-1970 Cadillac Coup De Ville style!!
oh my god this is awesome, I love the Memphis sound but I've never heard of this guy for some reason, but he's so good.
Places you trying to go, I've already been. The game you are playing I brought it here. I'm the Ace of Spades. I love the music by the great O.V. Wright. RIP.
This is freakin awesome!
There are weaker men that call themselves a jack, these are the Simps that fall in love head over cliff 😵💫

This song is so good. You just don't hear real feel good music like this any more.
wow what a great song i never knew about him up untill now
my mom used to listen to this song all the time and I always tried to find it
Oh yeah!
I LIKE O V WRIGHT.
Come on with that ish! Lit like 🔥when I hear this beat.
I had never heard of O.V. Wright before either until I found this 45 at a garage sale. Apparently, he was arrested several times for drug usage, and when he got out no label wanted to release his stuff, and he didn't make it big as a producer for his own label. At least he left us these recordings to enjoy!
"I USE ACE OF CLUBS TO KEEP MY BABY IN PLACE!!!" Right On Jack!!!
Shreveport La In The House And This Song Bring Back So Many Good Memories For Me

The trumpets on this song are 12 times hotter than the sun!
O.V. WRIGHT DIED IN 1980 R.I.P.
hey I played this at my birthday party at 10 yr I thought Joe TeX sang this I bought the record at Woolworth I had a close n play record player bb king ,Beatles
It hit different when u useta hear mamaem jamming it! But now u on it n living it 🤣😘✊🤗🙏🏿👑
......doing a bit of investigation, so this song and A Nickle & A Nail are winning me over to OV Wright. I am a white guy and really like this music....wish I had heard it sooner!!!
For LEMMY! R.I.P.
When this song came out it was so different from any thing else that it became an instant hit. The boasting words come from the blues and the piercing trumpets come from the big band. The whole is so much greater than the parts.
Never never get back.....
this song takes to the dirty dirty south, right on.
O.V. Is the man!!
love it
Thank you, “The Deuce”
David Pfeifer this was playing when Stretch shot Reggie Love
I agree. By the time O.V. signed with Hi,the label was a shell of it's former self and their version of the "Memphis Sound" seemed to lose it's luster a bit. Plus,O.V.'s health was slowly deteriorating at the time and you can hear that in his vocals as well. The "Memphis Unlimited" album was marvelous, the "Ace Of Spades/Nickel And A Nail" album was great as well. My favorite track from the "Memphis" LP is "Are You Going Where I'm Coming From".
This song plays right before the Robert Cray Band starts their concerts. He must be a big fan.
thanx for stayin' in there with me,Dave! cheers my friend lol!! :-)
This song is used on the rap artist classified and the song is called still got it...check it out
Deadric Malone was the pen name of Don Robey, who owned Duke, Peacock, Back Beat and Sure Shot Records. Despite getting no writing credits, I wouldn't be surprised if O.V. Wright didn't at least co-write that song, and come up with the original idea.
O.V. and James Carr were labelmates at one time back on a small Memphis label named Goldwax so that's another connection between the two.
@geneking7320 There are actually two versions of this tune. The one you're referring to is on the "Soul Of OV Wright" album and issued as the original Backbeat 45 single. This version is the first one I heard as a kid and I liked it better. It was issued on the "Vaults Of Duke/Peacock Records" album and issued as an ABC Records "Oldies 45" single. This version I posted is an alternate mix because he even phrased the lyrics differently.
@geneking7320 I remember the version that you're speaking of. That's the version that I used to hear as well. My auntee used to looveeee this song to death.
The answer to this song is also by O.V Wright-it's called lost in the shuffle...
@PatrioticPirate
To each his own I guess.....but I enjoyed having the discussion with you, that's part of what RUclips's about-sharing music, videos AND opinions.
Take care!
Notice how the Simps took offense to the lyrics of this song
The Deuce
poldoore - that game you're playing
True,I read about Robey/Malone. He's credited as writer on the majority of releases from the Duke/Peacock record group and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he constantly took credit for material he did not create. I have to post "Lost In The Shuffle" by OV Wright also...sorta like his follow-up to 'Ace Of Spades....if no one has beaten me to it already.
I'm the Ace Spade if your aren't the joke please don't comment.....lol
The ace of clubs comment is figurative. At the time this song was written, going to night clubs was the thing couples did. A certain type woman loved to be paraded around the night club circuit with a notable gentleman. That is how he kept her in place. By giving her what she wanted.
tell them O.V
moovin it
8 to the 4......
@Rayvyn007 That;s true about the "ace of clubs" reference, but "she's not here anymore"....c'mon,now! That can simply mean he replaced her with someone new-LOL!
A big fave of mine too… One question though. Where does this version appear ? Is it the Backbeat LP because it is different vocally to my 45 ?
Ivor Jones From the LP "14 Golden Recordings From The Historic Vaults Of Duke-Peacock Records" on ABC Records. It was issued on a Dunhill/ABC Oldies 45.
Ivor Jones I believe the Back Beat LP contains the same version as the Back Beat 45.
@Torihope exactly
Lol. Thats. A. Real. Life. Song. Listen here lol. Run it now.
Will someone please tell me how many studio versions of this song there are?
I like this because it includes the lines "there are some men, etc". The version on
The Soul of OV Wright cd does not. This version doesn't include my favorite line "you can go get your coat and I'll get your hat, I'll be the ace of spades baby whenever you come back". The version I remember from back in the day had BOTH lines I mentioned. Help!
if you have O.V.'s "Love & Happiness (Live in Tokyo, Japan"), would you please post it? Thank you.
@PatrioticPirate Well now,let's be truthful:
A Jack IS weak, it's the lowest rank out of the face cards. The only other card it can trump in many card games is a 10! (laugh).
I do agree with you on the "Ace Of Clubs" line but I guess the writer of the song (Deadric Malone) couldn't resist since the whole song references a deck of cards.
OV was so amazing.
It’s too bad your sound quality is off. 1:07
This is the original version with his squall and bravado! 🙌🏾
I know the reworked versions are because they didn’t have rights to their songs but the feeling gets lost in translation.
naw I rember it was my aunt record oh yes she had a record player too ,but my lyric are different
1st time hearing this song. Slim Thug - Recognize a Playa brought me here
I’m the ace of spade
Oh
I love instrumentation. It's absolute genius. The vocals are hotter than a Manassas Street corner, but between that Jack being called weak, and that "Ace of Clubs to keep my babe in place" bullshit absolutely fucks it up for me.
Thanks, but NO, THANKS.
This song really isn't that politically correct. First he says the woman who played a game on him is dead and he uses the Ace of Clubs to keep his baby in place. That means going up side her head if she acts up. But it's a great great song nonetheless.
Patrice O'Neal should've heard this.
@soln4suhreborn I take exception to that Jack line because I am known in certain circles as The Jack of Spades. I know, this line wasn't aimed at me, I'm only 40, so I may not have even been born at the time s the release of this song, but trust me: I definitely wouldn't keep my babe in line with any of that Ace of Clubs bullshit. And I'm personally not weak, so those two facts trump the entire song.
Thanks, but NO, THANKS.
You've exposed the Simp that You are 👋
