Franklin County has over 1000 caves in it. Amazing area Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks. Had many great times there back in the 1970's.

Beautiful views. I was surprised that West Virginia didn’t have higher mountains. But that is a beautiful area.
They’re not that high but they cover essentially the whole state. I’m out west now but when I visit the folks back east I’m always reminded that although the mountains and scenery out west where i now live is spectacular, the Appalachians are very scenic indeed. Check out the sunsets at Mount Rogers VA if you already have not. To the west is the Smokey Mountains and the sun sets right on them.

This was SO good to see again! When you leave the parking and duck into that trail, it's almost like Hobbit-land with the darkness, damp, and moss on everything! Then the rock- field, then the tower! When you get to the very top of that, and look over the rail, the tall shrub/ small tree you're looking down on is Mountain Ash. I went in October for my birthday weekend, and it was toasty-golden with oodles of red berries! That spot is the one place this far south that spruce grows, and only on the top of that mountain because the altitude makes the microclimate it needs - everything off that mountain is pine-hemlock-cedar forest with hardwoods mixed in. Yeah, the trees are too tall to see Virginia, but the sunset over Kentucky is awesome! Driving up for me was hard, cause I kept staring at the vista off the left as I climbed the road, and keeping attention on the road itself was difficult! Truly Awesome place!
There are a good number of peaks in the state that are spruce covered. Many mountains in the area are of similar altitudes.

Yes but some parts are very ugly because of mountain top strip mining! WV is also a very poor state like Kentucky!

That area is a favorite place I like to visit. We visit Spruce Knob every time, in the fall it's quite chilly, amazing view. There is a bed and breakfast, North Fork Mountain Inn, beautiful place to stay.
West Virginia, my chosen home state. Haven't been to Spruce Knob yet. Looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
The trail actually wraps around the top of the knob and has better views than the tower. But the tower is pretty cool in the way it was constructed. It is quite a drive to get up to the top, lots of great views. Thanks! 😊

I was camping at Spruce knob Lake Campground and the campground caretaker walk up to me. He said that bears been seen in the campground more than once that weekend.
I'm guessing they thought they had built the tower tall enough, should have built it taller. Nice views from up there, beautiful sunset.
the tower has been there for over 50 years, and those trees grow slowly. I suppose they could add another level, or just replace the tower with a new one.

it was mid may and morning time it was in the 30s
you should have did the path that wraps around the top of spruce knob
if you know what to look for you can still see the railroad beds from when they logged the area
