    Technically, this song is not in a natural G minor (G-A-Bb-C-D-Eb-F). The opening 2 chords are G-minor and C-major. The C-major triad is C-E-G, which means Eb is not relative to the key of this song. This is G Dorian (G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F), or F major (F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E) or D minor (D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C). All of them have the same 7 notes. Anyway, I figured any guitar nerds out there might like to know they can mess with the F major scale or D minor scale and it would be tonic to this song.

    One thing that i love about this track is that you can shift between modes as the melody changes. You can play dorian/mixolydian really soft and sensitive in the first part of the track and as the melody gets darker you can shift to the blues scale and natural minor and play more harsh and that creates a really powerful contrast. Love it!!

    Hi all,
    I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for checking out this backing track. As of when this comment was written, it is the most viewed guitar backing track on youtube. A feat that frankly blows me away. I get messages and comments frequently asking whether the track can be used for a song etc. YES that is exactly what I made this for! This goes for any of my tracks! These have been created to inspire creativity. If you feel you want to write a song off of it then frankly it is my honour that you have chosen my track for that and the backing track has served its purpose :) Hope everyone is keeping well and rocking hard! Apologies for the long winded message!

  • @JohnSmith-te5oo

    @rampant, you don't get it. He KNOWS this stuff inside and out. He doesn't consciously think 'ok. Let's play the flat 7th part of the scale here because...' Any more than an elite swimmer consciously thinks of the angle he's placing his hand at when it enters the water, but he goes by neural pattern, proprioception etc
    Gilmour knows the modes,scales, relationships, tension points etc but of course he doesn't consciously think about what exact part of the scale he is using next because TRULY having mastery and ingrained understanding means he can, to paraphrase Miles Davis 'just forget all that shit and fucking BLOW!'
    It is KNOWING that stuff so deeply that allows him to let his true artistry loose because he has both the mechanical skills (dexterity, feel, etc) and the knowledge of theory - he can EXPRESS his feelings and they will cone out through those mechanical skills:knowledge
    They are WHY it is fluid, effortless, emotive, and inspired
    Granted, there is a place in music where NOT having mastery and not having theory allows an artist to do some truly unique, less is more stuff - think the reaction to the conception of PF as overwrought, over arranged, over orchestrated, bloated arena rock - that led to punk. And thank god. Both are awesome and the latter was at least partially invented as a 'fuck you, let's get back to three chords a guitar and the truth '
    Thank God for Gilmour and thank god for the antigilmours , playing on a bleeding edge reaction to same
    Admittedly I cut my teeth listening to guitarists who could complete multiple albums W/o a single solo

      +John Smith There's a difference between music "knowledge" and musical "understanding." It's the latter that truly makes a good musician. However, in order for one to have that, a working and practical knowledge of music theory is absolutely necessary, before one is able to internalize all that information and turn it into emotion.

    you can close your eyes and feel the music while also knowing what your playing...
    you can think dorian and feel dorian. or any mode..
    If you don't use the right scale you could play out of key. That's why it's important to know what scales are...not to mention navigating chord changes..
    going into complex theory does not always take out the soul in music.
    I think theory is perceived in a intimidating way, cause people assume there is so much going on in the seemingling impossible theory, nobody could possibly think/feel simultaneously. If one knows what they want to express and knows the theory possible for their idea, phrasing with feeling can happen.

      Casnikful Объясняю по русски!!!!!!! В этом варианте минусовки используется гамма Соль(G) в Дорийском(dorian) ладу. Значит минор(minor) здесь будет Ре (D). И соответственно пентатоника будет D minor. It will be correct here D minor pentatonic. On a becking a track there are a lot of options with the wrong explanation, it is also necessary to select most. There is an option of this composition in Am, but here it is G dorian - D minor. Why D pentatonic? If is D blues.

      Doesn't mean it isn't minor! And the part that goes from Eb to Fsus4 and F is actually an Eb Lydian progression, which is the same as G Aeolian. So you can think of it as G Dorian for the first section and G Aeolian for the second, if you want. Both of which are G minor scales.

      I like g Dorian for the first part, you can build a lot of tension and release and get super hyped! For the slow bridges I thought g minor sounded fine. The whole song the d# note and e note can be interchangeable. Build tension, bend them, hammer them, hold them. Or do that 4 note chromatic run off them! Haha ; )

    I don't understand why people improvise with specific scales. I think a much more healthier way to approach improvising is to just play and not to be that conscious about what you're doing. Improvisation shouldn't be an exercise.
    Do you think when Gilmour was soloing he thought to himself "Yeah now I'm gonna bust out my G Dorian" ? lol

    • @JulioLeonFandinho
      @JulioLeonFandinho 9 лет назад +16

      yes, i think so... or maybe he's thinking about patterns or boxes. He's not for sure thinking every note

    • @cmac2415
      @cmac2415 9 лет назад +113

      David Gilmour is 100% conscious of every note that he plays. It's not a matter of improvising with a specific scale, it's about following the chords. When he's playing over a G Minor chord the notes G Bb and D will sound the most grounded because they make up the minor triad (1 b3 and 5). Within the minor pentatonic scale the third note is the 11th (C), and the fifth note is the minor 7th (F). Then you can use Dorian to get the 9th (A) and the "dorian" note, the Sharp 13th (E). the coolest thing about it is those key notes change over every chord. When it changes the a C7, now your major triad and most grounded notes are C E and G. Your pentatonic extras are the 9th (D) and the 13th (A), and your modal note, since this is the dominant chord the mode is Mixolydian, is a Flat 7th (Bb). And wanna know the craziest thing about it? all of these complex extensions are ALL notes within G Dorian. So it's not about "busting out G Dorian" and just playing a scale up and down. It's about knowing how to use those notes wisely. Does David Gilmour know all of this? Yes, absolutely. Now, not all guitar players do obviously. Hendrix had such an incredible ear that he could hear all of these complex extensions without knowing what they were, mainly because he just grew to know the sound of it. My long awaited point is this: If you are trying to improvise and you are "not conscious about what you're doing", chances are that there is a lot of knowledge out there that you're missing out on that could really helpful. And let me make this clear. Guys like Gilmour know this stuff so well and know the sound and know the relationships between all of these different formulas and when he plays, he doesn't need to think about it because he can do it without thinking. Don't confuse unconscious incompetence for unconscious competence.

    • @tollerest
      @tollerest 9 лет назад

      Lol funny but true, if practising scales and trying to eartrain from them with the intervals in the right place the best place to go is a drone track as the intervals remain correct for the scale you practice, but i guess these backing tracks break up the monotony, I would say as Gilmour was playing he could follow the chords and then play what he was hearing, and maybe the dorian visualisation would of helped find notes at some point, notes he knew he wanted to play, which ever method he used he got there and didn't do it by sleeping and letting his guitar lead him. although we have to remember once he played a song it was memory. I agree there is a mindset you need to get in to play well, especially if your singing something emotional not to get to emotional that you throw your guitar and not to be to alert that you have no emotion.

      Conor McCarthy So you are saying Gilmore never just lays a track down and closes his eyes and plays and feels the notes , without planning as you stated above knowing this will go best with that etc., etc. ?
      You actually believe that? or am I misunderstanding?
      I don't read music, played on and off now for 43 years.
      I played with friends who play all over the world, professionally, and I have to tell you you seriously don't know everything there is t know about music.
      I use backing tracks, & have people make them for me, as well, and I (and many others) just create as it plays and I have not one clue of what I am doing except for what I either hear in my head to play next or , what I feel in my fingers sounds right.
      I record it and sort out whats good and repeat, until I get what I like, and once we hit record the last time that's it, and my friend no one has told us what the notes are or any of the musical tech people like me don't use.
      I know more than a few other people out there who do exactly the same thing, and will tell you the same thing.
      People don't always sit down and compose music as you explain above. If you're human & musical you are going to improvise and create something on the fly, and us it, later or work it into what you want, or maybe it's right the first time, and never has to be changed.
      I know some of my stuff if not for recording it, I would have forgotten and would never ave been captured again , and lost forever, just part of life. Losing memory abilities sucks, so recording, becomes your memory. :-)
      Part of learning to make and create music was playing along with records and tapes, and other people for everyone I know in the music business, and world.
      You may have just brainwashed yourself and maybe a few others but, not all of us. Lol :-)

    Mind vs mind : You need the mind of man to get past the animal mind. That is why we evolved from lower animals to humans. You have to know the intellectual mind truth, the though or word truth, before you can separate yourself from the mind completely; thus, you have to be where you are now. You have to know you have a mind and its nature. You have to know you are really a spiritual being and the nature of spiritual things. You have to know you are going to die and be reborn. page 46 of the Present.
