These are beautiful climbing vines. I have a bunch of wisteria on my side yard. It’s taken over that part of our yard. It was overgrown when we bought our house so it’s been impossible for me to get under control. It has covered a swing set that was here. My grandchildren have outgrown it so I’m letting it do it’s thing there. My plan is to cut back everything else but it’s so hard to stop it from coming back in unwanted areas. Is there anything I can do to control it other than just keeping it cut down to the ground. It’s impossible to dig it all up. We live in a woody area and it gets very limited sun so it’s not blooming. It’s also under a 60 foot magnolia tree. There’s basically nothing we can do in this area. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Wisteria. You're right, once established, it can be very vigorous and sometimes difficult to control. Here are some tips that might help:
      1. Pruning: Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep it under control and to encourage blooming. You can prune it back hard in late winter, and then do some additional tidying up in summer after it has flowered.
      2. Remove unwanted growths: If wisteria starts to grow in unwanted areas, remove those growths as soon as possible. The longer they are allowed to grow, the harder they will be to control.
      3. Barrier: You could consider installing a physical barrier, like a root barrier, to prevent the roots from spreading into unwanted areas. This might be an extensive project but could provide a more long-term solution.
      4. Consult a professional: If it's become too overwhelming, you might consider hiring a professional landscaper or arborist to help manage the situation. They will have experience in dealing with vigorous plants like wisteria and can provide advice tailored to your situation.
Remember, wisteria is a beautiful plant, but it does require regular attention to prevent it from becoming too invasive. I hope these tips help and wish you the best of luck in managing your wisteria! 🌿🌸🍃
