The first overnight backpack with my son as a new Boy Scout, 17 years ago, when he was 11. We camped at the lake two nights and hiked up Surprise Peak. It is a really nice hike. By all means, go back in sunny weather.
Thanks David! This is definitely on our return list for next Summer. There are quite a few peaks around that lake and we would love to bag them all. :D
Thanks for another outstanding video, Nick and Jen. You guys look like you're having great fun. I was in that general area last summer, hiking back to Barclay Lake. It was a gentle hike of a bit over 4 miles round trip, but I loved the area. I look forward to your next video.
Thanks Anthony! Barclay Lake is beautiful and a perfect hike for those who are looking to get into backpacking. That whole Baring area has some wonderful hikes.
I was pleasantly surprised by this video's unanticipated destination. So many events occurring here were totally unexpected and I marveled at the unforeseen circumstances surrounding this adventure. Imagine my astonishment as you visited the lake. But seriously...enjoyable as usual. Glad to see Jen smiling again. As for you...you are always smiling, you happy bastard. Jen...the fact about the wren was not that interesting...bud it did surprise me. I was amazed at the diminutive size of the lake. I did not believe the elevation gain...and hold it in dispute. The bonus lake was lovely as well. Disappointment set in with the removal of Glacier Lake from the itinerary. Nice hike, nevertheless!
I really need to get a zoom lens so I can better focus on the birds we sometimes see. The dipper, well, American Dipper, is a small water bird that inhabits streams here in the Pacific Northwest. One of its signature traits is its dipping motion it makes as it stands and waits. Also, it can swim underwater like a penguin. Pretty amazing bird. Here is some excellent footage from Glenn Bartly ruclips.net/video/HyFEbuy8RUg/видео.html
Wow. great video by GB. North America's only diving swimming songbird. I did not know that. Thanks. Since you mentioned camera equipment, I'd be interested in seeing your camera setup. Maybe a review or overview. B
Would you recommend this as a backpacking trip to take landscape photos? I'm looking to do a few overnighters and would like to add to my collection of Washington landscape photography. Thanks much, and keep up the great work! Awesome channel!
Just did this hike the other day. Glacier was only .5 miles from surprise. did you guys ever return? My group I was with unaminously agreed we needed to come back to camp! so many great spots!
It's on our list to return, and we keep mentioning it when we plan our backpacking trips. But there are other hikes/lakes we haven't been to yet so we keep putting a return trip off.
At minute 10:30. You will hear a loud whistle. Sounds to mechanical to be an animal. Do you happen to know what makes this noise ? Lol This is my first year hiking and I stick mostly to hwy2 trails and I keep hearing this noise. Can’t figure it out.
Have you been to surprise lake on a sunny summer day; great for a swim. Bring something like a net to kill the deer fly . I went to copper lake in skykomish last week and it was heavenly. I do not see a copper lake video from you. take care.
Is that the one along the PCT in Snoqualmie? If so, we almost made it to that point last year when we did Kendall Catwalk. I guess Joe Lake is a few miles past that?

Good video. I plan to solo hike and camp at Surprise Lake this weekend and this video helps. Thanks.

I think you made Jen spit out some of her tea when she read your comment about the Wren Facts. :)
That was my goal
all that's missing is a little sun and a Redwing blackbird...my favorite bird btw
Love the sound of redwing. We had quite a few of them at our camp when we did the Ancient Lakes trip.
Nice hike. Did you guys happen to notice any fish around the edges there?
Another great hike you guys. Love the light. Okay Nick. What's a dipper?

You guys should consider South Sister in Oregon. :) Nice scrample to the top volcano.
We were just talking about South Sister. Maybe this Summer once we can plan a long distance trip.

Never knew there were so many Surprise lakes in WA. Look at my avatar. That was near another Surprise lake in WA. Near the Carbon river.

I would love to see a video of you guys going to Joe lake in the gold Creek Valley…

Great vid but a view of one of the camping areas would have been nice
